Nice informative video. Great to get the info from the local people. It give so much more depth to the video. This is so much more interesting than if you had driven up to the main border crossing. Bonne route, bon voyages. Mac
Yup, Finland is Northern Europe, and not a part of Scandinavia....add that your to your geography experience....::) your local Norwegian guide is very good - thanks for the video ;-)
Søren Veje I know that now. Thank you. Looking at the map , it appears that Finland is part of Scandanavia , but once I went there , and met the people for myself, I realized how the Finnish people familiarize more with Estonians than they do Swedes or Norweigeans .
There is something interesting in every part of the world. Little by little , I would like to see as much as possible , and meet as many different people as possible.
You are right. It's always very interesting to go to such parts of the world. I crossed the same border by car few years ago. A lot of my friends argued 'you are crazy to go by car from Bulgaria to Murmansk & Kirkenes & Nord Cap)' But in fact it was very nice experience (but it was summer time :) ) ...
Good narration again. :) I see you had a great local guide. I'm glad. Kirkenes is way better when you get to know the locals. :) Really nice people, great hosts that know to show someone a good time. ;-)
atticgnom thanks , I did meet various locals and they were all very friendly , intelligent and eager to talk with me . I wish I had more time to explore there.
You know, there's the story of the U2 spy plane as well, that had to land in the Soviet Union. They made a film about it recently, starring Tom Hanks. It's called Bridge of Spies. Well, one little detail I don't think was included in the film, was that the U2 spy plane had to fly into Norwegisn airspace before reaching the USSR, and so the Soviets blamed Norway for the spy planed and threatened to nuke us (Norway) over it. Luckily, that just remained a threat.
thank you for that information. I will look into watching it. I really enjoyed being in Northern Norway. I wish I had more time to explore the area. 3 days was not enough time .
Maybe not that many, but yes. Finland fought Russia in the Winter War in 1939-40 and then during the Continuation War until 1944, when Finland and Russia signed a peace treaty. Finland gave up a lot of land, but stopped Stalin from annexing Finland, because Hitler told Stalin that the Finn's were fighting with Germany and that pissed off Stalin. Finland's leader Carl Mannerhiem had to deal with Hitler and fight Stalin. The Finn's were massively outnumbered against the Red Army, but they fought and kept their country. Too bad after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Finland didn't get that land back. There's way more to it than what I wrote.
In places like this half of stories are fictions people genuinely believe is true. Do u know btw that Russian troops entered Kirkenes during ww2 in the end of 1944 and there was heavy fighting there.
No, that is the Nordic countries, actually if you want to get technical only norway, sweden and northern Finland are a part of scandinavia. i live in southern Finland and am not in scandinavia...
the scandinavian peninsula is actually only sweden and norway. when finland is counted in, its called finnoscandia, but normally, only norway, denmark, and sweden are counted as scandinavia, if you include færøyene, åland, iceland and greenland you get the nordic countries
Markus Duesseldorf what would happen if he crossed illegal in 2017? Do you think he would die in the prison like the other guy did? I wonder if an American really wanted to go to Russia today illegal and stay and renounce his USA citizenship in Russia would they allow it. Some Americans really hate living in a capitilist country and really want out but can't get a passport because of AFDC and irs debts that are outrageous.
Finland is not part of Scandinavia. It is, however, a Nordic country.
wow! great adventure. your driver made the story good! he's awesome!
