When he tells Jonathan how to rip the book he puts both hands on the spine. So how does he know how to open the book at the right page? Did he put something in to know where to open? I think that's the key of the trick...
I don't think that's the case. He tells P&T there was no indexing, which I assume means marking the page in some way. I liked that Penn had the integrity to not keep guessing. The issue is that he didn't *really* fool them. The trick had five or maybe a dozen different ways of being done? Penn could rattle off four or five and get to the right one. He did the right thing in letting the dude win, since the two they guessed wasn't the right one and he managed to make it appear like they were. Good truck
I know this is a late comment but you are so right. Actually I believe on one trick they employ the "1% rule". Lots of magic tricks have multiple tricks that are used in sequence to make a great show, P&T might literally know 99% of how a trick is done; however, if they can't figure out how the last 1% of the trick is done, they submit that the performer fooled them. In this case they had no idea how Baker got the correct page on the sword (they probably knew a page was on the sword but how did pg 520 get on there - of course that was a lie which they didnt catch) I think that is really nice and just goes to show how knowledgeable they are.
I remember when everyone thought this trick sucked. Now everyone loves it, clearly it aged well! I always thought it was really offbeat, low-fi, surprising and hilarious. Almost feels like if David Letterman stole Brian Brushwood's soul.
The lie at the end was the best. They didn't think he was just making up the page # at the end. They believed it was the page he said it was. He did fool them. I agree with Penn on this one, but barely. They guessed twice but given more guesses, they would have gotten it.
yep, they didn't notice the page was different colors, but you can only see that if you slow down the camera enough at 1:45 and look at the corner; it's a bright red page which is different than the blue corner page 6:00 he removed from his sword

+THEJIGGADREWSHOW i'd have a comment there, but commenting what I want to say could potentially allow others to figure it out and make the method public. I don't know how he did it, but I have a piece of the puzzle.
Thomas Riley I don't think it's giving away too much to say he wanted Teller to get rid of the 1st phone book so he can use the ''back-up'' phone book. :)
@@THEJIGGADREWSHOW it doesn't really matter. It was more for the entertainment factor. The entire trick was essentially done when Jonathan wrote the page down
There has ALWAYS BEEN a great degree of irreverence in the Penn & Teller performances. For a Fooler to receive a "FU" trophy 🏆 is actually high praise coming from these 2 world renowned performers.
+Izzard They've selected the page number random at the first part of the trick and just Jonathan Ross knew it until the end. So when Wes Barker picked the page, and said the number out loud by that moment he didn't know what number Jonathan wrote on the paper at the beginning. It's a great trick!
+José Miguel Cegarra Vasquez I can't understand what you're trying to say, but yes: Wes said the name of the page first and then Jonathan confirmed it, which is part of the brilliant misdirection at the end of the trick. But if you think only Jonathan knew the the page number until the end then you've been fooled :)
He didn’t fool them. But they liked him. He marked or folded the page. When he says not to rip it in half with it open his finding the page number that’s why he flicks around a bit. When he gets the second phone book he rips the page out. If you pause video just as his turning to stab page, you can see the page on the sword already.
Congrats, all 3 of you are fools. Go watch the reveal video. The page was literally just a random page on the sword (because it is not humanly possible to stab a page reliably, and it didn't matter to him what page it was).
This is why magic is more about showmanship than about the actual quality of the tricks. Of course, tearing a phonebook apart is quite impressive, but I believe that even if it was the most terrible and cliche trick in the world, I would’ve had a blast with this man’s charisma. The British host is also hilarious, I loved him! Made me wanna impersonate him 😂
Actually, it was a Break (a Mark) and Peek. Penn was just wrong with the Index. No index was necessary bc of the end. Penn and Teller were thrown off bc of the second phone book. Very clever addition in order to misdirect a magician.
He didn't have the correct page, he read off the pages he saw when the book was open because he couldn't be sure if the page on the left or the page on the right was picked. If penn had asked to see the page from the sword it would have been blown.
This clip highlights the value of a good MC... Jonathon was *_amazing_* in this playing off of t’other guy, now we’ve a host with the personality of a wall.
3:54 "I'll be honest, I'm more scared of getting one of your fingers in me" *awkward audience half-laughter* OUT OF COMPLETELY NOWHERE WTF how has no one commented on this
Wes Barker, Congrats!!!! I'm guessing you were NOT expecting to go home with a trophy? Not based on the trick, based on the stunned laughter after they gave it to you. :P
6:01 There is no page in any book that starts with even number. Same page numbers start with odd numbers 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 ... 519-520, 521-522 (there is no page with numbers 520-521 on it) hence he took a guess while previously peeking before ripping the book.
He didn't guess. He marked the pages (he's revealed this trick). But since he didn't know if the assistant looked at the left (520) or the right (521) of the book and which number he picked, he had to guess both of those numbers. The only other way to be correct would have been to have two pieces of paper on the sword and call out the 4 numbers.
Wes Barker so true, the host can make such a difference in shows like this and that's why I like the old seasons with Jonathan way more than with alyson, nothing personal but imo she's not the right one for this show and I liked ur performance aswell, I already know this trick but ure really entertaining what makes this routine really enjoyable
You have to remember these two are very different individuals. I personally like both, of course it would've been nice if host didn't have to change, but that's just the way it goes in the industry.
More importantly at 6:00 he just says the numbers that were on two separate pages. The even number is always higher than the odd number on the page (1-2, 3-4, 521-522).
I know why you would think the pages are 1-2 3-4, but for no reason does page 1 need to start on the left side. It could be 1 2-3 4-5. And don't try to argue that, because we both know that's there's no way you would know which side of the book page 1 started at.
HE PEAKED AT THE PAGE AND IT CAN BE PROVEN. At 1:46 take note of the only 1 red page that stands out that is a few page from the guy has selected. He probably put something in the book to mark that page. He then uses the distraction by explaining the technique of ripping out the page to read what page he selected. For 2:00 you can see him trying to find the page and you can also he finds the exact page because a few page back is that distinct 1 red page that stands out seen on 2:01.
The real magic was the reading out of the page numbers in a vulnerable way. So convincing that neither of the old hands even considered it could be acting! Sealed the deal on a brilliantly designed trick. And the 1,2,3 moment is one of the all time great comedy moments in magic. Fantastic.
Penn was farr too pressing at the end there when trying to rattle off methods when he wasn't right. He kinda caught what he was doing and defused it with his ending remark about cheating and it getting too far. But this was most pressing and I've seen him be with a guest on his show.
+Bruce Doyle That's just Penn's sense of humor. But I think he was actually surprised that they gave it to him, since they were calling out the technical jargon of how it could be accomplished and he seemed to be kind of resigned to "Oh, well, they figured it out..." when Penn said he "fooled us", his face lit up. Silly trophy on a show that mainly serves to showcase new magicians with no big prize money or anything... but I bet he treasures that little bit of acrylic. :-)
>Silly trophy on a show that mainly serves to showcase new magicians with no big prize money But isn't some kind of Las Vegas performing too? I don't remember what it is actually since i heard it the first season and then never again.
By mentioning the index he showed he didn't actually get it right. He still believed Wes actually got the right page. He didn't realize nobody actually verified those page numbers and that Wes could have lied.

I think it takes a lot of courage and cold blood to do what you did! I really like how you have fooled them with such a simple but risky trick. Your show is very funny and you're very nice. I laughed so much, thank you!
@4:07 i was cracking up laughing so hard....'''Throw the pages....on a count of 3.''.....hahahha
+THEJIGGADREWSHOW i'd have a comment there, but commenting what I want to say could potentially allow others to figure it out and make the method public. I don't know how he did it, but I have a piece of the puzzle.
Thomas Riley
I don't think it's giving away too much to say he wanted Teller to get rid of the 1st phone book so he can use the ''back-up'' phone book. :)
+THEJIGGADREWSHOW Teller? Teller wasnt ussd though. You mean t hrs.
@@THEJIGGADREWSHOW it doesn't really matter. It was more for the entertainment factor. The entire trick was essentially done when Jonathan wrote the page down
Jonathan is mortified after he throws them the first time.
Man. What I like about this show is they really show respect to the performer and craft.
8:04
“I’m on your page now”
Lmfao
I love how everyone points out the page being on the sword, when that isn't even a crucial part of the trick and is just there for showmanship.
There has ALWAYS BEEN a great degree of irreverence in the Penn & Teller performances. For a Fooler to receive a "FU" trophy 🏆 is actually high praise coming from these 2 world renowned performers.
A force was the first thing I thought of. Pretty awesome he didn't use a force.
Ya.. forces are for pussy's.. I would do it his way too..
You could explain 75% of this show's tricks through forces, but I'm baffled when some of them say that it's not a force
I'm guessing it's a peek, not a force.
Even though the presenter almost f**ked up the trick for Wes, he came back in the end, GREAT JOB!
If you are referring to the "wrong toss", that was a deliberate part of the act.
Been watching these all day. This is one of the best
“I call this one Jonathan” 😂🤣😂🤣
Excellent misdirection. All I’ll say is the magic is in the last split second when the audience has already begun applauding :)
+Izzard Holy crap!! You are right! I get it now after re-watching.
+bossestentialism what is the timestamp that you guys are talking about?
+Izzard I DON'T GET IT
+Izzard They've selected the page number random at the first part of the trick and just Jonathan Ross knew it until the end.
" I call this one Jonathan " XD
I'm wondering, would you have been able to do the trick the way you did it if the stage floor had been different?
He's performed in retirement homes. That trick, and I'm guessing the others he does, would work anywhere, He wouldn't need a special stage.
I just find it funny that the trophy just has a big F U on it lol 😂😂
Fooled us
+jonskyproduktions shit dont say...
aaron popoca *you dont say
And Penn & Teller had another show called BS
It's intentional and that's the joke.
I cal this one Jonathan
I cant do this one jonathan
Wes Barker, what fire crew you work for before?? I was on the Firebird Unit crew for 7 years. Nice magic stunt by the way !
Princeton Sierra unit crew
+Wes Barker. Beauty man!
+Wes Barker Great Trick, i saw how the trick was done, and it was just splendid.
+Marco Chica How was it done?
+Marco Chica how was it done?
He didn’t fool them. But they liked him.
He marked or folded the page. When he says not to rip it in half with it open his finding the page number that’s why he flicks around a bit. When he gets the second phone book he rips the page out. If you pause video just as his turning to stab page, you can see the page on the sword already.
THANK YOOOOOUUUU
Thought I was the only one
It was the second book that gave it away I thought. Damn good trick though, super clever
The second book is where he tore the correct page from, it was required but a nice misdirect yes
Kyle Milford What makes you think he had the correct page on the sword?
Kyle Milford I'm pretty sure he never actually had the page. He just said the page number because he already saw it near the start of the routine.
He didn't have the correct page, he read off the pages he saw when the book was open because he couldn't be sure if the page on the left or the page on the right was picked. If penn had asked to see the page from the sword it would have been blown.
This British host is so nice they had back in the earlier seasons!
yeah jonathan ross is brilliant. he's one of our national treasures
Jonathan Ross is a legend.
Funny to call him "this British host"
at one point I completely forgot this was a magic trick and just enjoyed the fun
I also think the reason he rips two phone books apart is to have more papers on the floor so the paper that he let's go off is difficult to find
ooh would make sense
The paper is already on the sword before it's thrown. 5.55
mano wars yeah but it’s a random page
Baga Inferno actually you’d be surprised at the small details like that you miss when looking over a large amount of similar items.
There was no force. It was a load. BEAUTIFULLY executed! Awesome job, Wes!!
This clip highlights the value of a good MC... Jonathon was *_amazing_* in this playing off of t’other guy, now we’ve a host with the personality of a wall.
3:54 "I'll be honest, I'm more scared of getting one of your fingers in me"
*awkward audience half-laughter*
OUT OF COMPLETELY NOWHERE WTF how has no one commented on this
Daniel J. I’m pretty sure it was referencing how he’s a strongman and how the carrot also got chopped just like it did with the sword.
i really love Wes´s awesome energy.
Wes Barker, Congrats!!!! I'm guessing you were NOT expecting to go home with a trophy? Not based on the trick, based on the stunned laughter after they gave it to you. :P
Jonathan really makes this show much more entertaining
6:01 There is no page in any book that starts with even number. Same page numbers start with odd numbers 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 ... 519-520, 521-522 (there is no page with numbers 520-521 on it) hence he took a guess while previously peeking before ripping the book.
It wasn't a guess he just plain and simply lied about the number on the page. It was just a prop.
He didn't guess. He marked the pages (he's revealed this trick). But since he didn't know if the assistant looked at the left (520) or the right (521) of the book and which number he picked, he had to guess both of those numbers. The only other way to be correct would have been to have two pieces of paper on the sword and call out the 4 numbers.
the show was so much better when Jonathan was hosting it
Jonathan is soooooo good as a host.
Wes Barker so true, the host can make such a difference in shows like this and that's why I like the old seasons with Jonathan way more than with alyson, nothing personal but imo she's not the right one for this show
and I liked ur performance aswell, I already know this trick but ure really entertaining what makes this routine really enjoyable
I really appreciate that. And yes, nothing against Alyson but it takes a certain personality to host a show like that.
You have to remember these two are very different individuals. I personally like both, of course it would've been nice if host didn't have to change, but that's just the way it goes in the industry.
I don't know...Allyson looks much better!
Didn't he simply read the page numbers at 2:00 ?? That's the only place and he very clearly read the page number. How did they not get it?
Yes 😂
More importantly at 6:00 he just says the numbers that were on two separate pages. The even number is always higher than the odd number on the page (1-2, 3-4, 521-522).
+netandycz so he didnt know which one the two pages was the correct one so he said both in a sneaky way, right?
I know why you would think the pages are 1-2 3-4, but for no reason does page 1 need to start on the left side. It could be 1 2-3 4-5. And don't try to argue that, because we both know that's there's no way you would know which side of the book page 1 started at.
HE PEAKED AT THE PAGE AND IT CAN BE PROVEN. At 1:46 take note of the only 1 red page that stands out that is a few page from the guy has selected. He probably put something in the book to mark that page. He then uses the distraction by explaining the technique of ripping out the page to read what page he selected. For 2:00 you can see him trying to find the page and you can also he finds the exact page because a few page back is that distinct 1 red page that stands out seen on 2:01.
man, his shoes are sick!! what brand/model are they??
Wes Barker... YOUR GREAT AT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How Teller looked behind the table at the end, to make sure he hasn`t used an index of som kind 😂 🤣
Penn
He seems so awkwardly likable. Thats a guy I would love to drink a beer with :D
please someone heop me. this is could be one of my favourites. does any1 know similiar preformances recommended plz
I recommend a performance by shin lim on Penn and teller
God damn, this guy has balls of steel. I bet they kicked themselves when they worked it out!
[Explaining what his magic style NOT] WES : It's not like "Fire, fire, DOVE!" 😆😆😆
It was teller that had to tell him he fooled them. You can see him mouthing it before penn was going to take a 3rd run like a bitch lol
Ok so when you fool Penn and Teller, you literally get a Trophy that says: "F - U"... thats Nice :D
+MrJest2 there only suppose to be allowed one guess. While they can bend the rules it's really up to their discretion
>Silly trophy on a show that mainly serves to showcase new magicians with no big prize money
But isn't some kind of Las Vegas performing too? I don't remember what it is actually since i heard it the first season and then never again.
Pikopati performing at one of their shows. they use to say that was a prize but i dont watch this show ofte so i may be wrong
"Hey where'd you get that trophy?"
"From the show F.U."
Penn and Teller, you guys are the greatest!
Imagine at the end when Penn looks back behind the desk, he shouts "Hey there IS an index back here!" :D
Jonathan is really smooth at quick banter and ad-lib.
He tore the phone book in half by bending it in a way to where he’s really just ripping one page at a time really quickly.
Second time being fooled by a book, penn and teller must hate reading
Penn had it right the second time, then mentioned an "index" that invalidated his explanation. He assumed too much lol.
Thats because the stabing part is just half the trick, they still didn't knew how he knew the page number
By mentioning the index he showed he didn't actually get it right. He still believed Wes actually got the right page. He didn't realize nobody actually verified those page numbers and that Wes could have lied.
It's awesome to see a fellow ex roughneck put together a friggin magic show based on that personality type. Bravo good sir!
GOOOOO VANCOUVER!!! I didnt know we had talented magicians
+benz69 we also have Shawn Farquhar. Look him up as well.
Wow, thanks for the reply Wes. This is my first or second comment I ever made on TH-cam but I never expect you will reply. I think millions will agree with me that it was right you quit your job! Great inspiration. I will look up Shawn and hopefully to see you guys in Vancouver. Thank you so much
Just be sure to use a phone book. Nice to see someone else who knows how to rip one in half!
hi wes! wondering what shoes you're wearing, im trying to find that style for someone! thought you were our favorite on p&t!
Vancouver BC*... man it's annoying to live in the other Vancouver (that is technically OLDER, and was the main seat of power for the whole territory, but is now forgotten in time). Though I don't know of any magicians from Vancouver, WA so meh.
