Saved by a Seed : Meet the woman who preserves over 90 endangered varieties of grains

Lakshmiamma is a farmer and trained cameraperson from the Deccan Development Society who grows 92 varieties of grains in 2 acres of land in the Zaheerabad district of Telangana. Not only can she name each one of them but also elaborate on how one compliments the other. The purpose of doing her profile is to document a bank of seeds visually along with their advantages and resilience to the changing weather .

Traditionally Farmers have been saving seeds for generations to use them for later seasons. But due to the heavy commercialization and necessity, it's become more of a norm to simply buy the engineered seeds thus giving up on the local need of preservation.
But the local and naturally occurring seeds have to be preserved for the unexpected developments of the modified seeds and also for the natural path of evolution. And no better way to do that than by the farmers themselves.Amma is doing exactly that and with a wonderful perspective as well. She is actually doing something which was very common but very essential, lost in the shadow of growth and development. Hope other farmers follow the suit.

There are Public seed banks but they have certain limitations. They can never reach every village and preserve every possible seed from the very grass-root. That's why private preservation is equally if not more important. there is more diversity and less chances of loss in case of multiple local seed banks.

Dont expect government to do anything to ensure a healthy and safe future; as others wrote, they only serve the corporate industries they work for. We must all be doing this locally of our own accord... You can start small, community gardening, organizing ecological education events and groups.. :)
