    Feels so nice to see new upload from you right now. I'm very sick at the moment and can't even sleep because of that, so listening your voice is very soothing. Thank you for reading more and more of these stories for us! I follow many readers, but your voice is my absolute favorite. You speak so calmly and casually, it's very comfortable to listen to. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Finland.

    @LetsReadPodcast Absolutely love the channel and as someone who lives in Alaska, I appreciate you sharing the Butcher Baker story!
    Fun fact! A relative of mine was heavily involved in the investigation and the actual arrest of Baker. He interrogated him and told me about how much of a textbook narcissist he was.
    He was called the “Butcher Baker” because he owned a bakery that Anchorage Police would visit REGULARLY! They had no idea what he was doing until that woman literally ran away from him as he was trying to force her into his plane.
    He also held records for Dall sheep hunting. The records were obviously expunged once his crimes were discovered.

    • @violentabyss

      Oh man I have one of those. I'll write it out now cause why not. If Joel sees this you're free to narrate it!
      I had a friend in high school, let's call her Daisy. Daisy had problems at home, though she was always very guarded with what exactly was going on. She was nice, maybe a little awkward. The years went by and we had a soft falling out. Fast forward around four years, I hadn't talked to her in a long time. I was at school, college this time, and I got a text from her out of the blue. "Do you want to meet up?" I said something to the effect of "hi, it's been a while! Sure, I'm on my way home right now, we can chat for a little bit, maybe go out for boba." She agreed and said she'd meet me at the bus stop. I was a little confused because I didn't know how she knew I was on the bus- I had never taken it in high school since my house was so close. I tried to coordinate with her so she'd be at the right bus stop, but she stopped responding. I saw her a few stops away from when I would get off. She tried getting on the bus without paying, and I decided to just get off early and walk with her.
      I said hello, and tried some small talk since we hadn't exactly left on the best of terms. But she was strange. Really strange. A solid minute had passed since I'd said hello, and I was talking about the boba shop when she responded belatedly with a greeting of her own. I was confused, she had been completely quiet for the better half of a block and then suddenly said hello after the one sided conversation had gone on. I thought maybe she was nervous or something and I tried to be accommodating. But quietly within me I know something was wrong. Her mannerisms and speech patterns were completely different than the Daisy I knew from school. I found myself asking, is this even the same person? But as soon as I asked myself that I dismissed the thought because it was ridiculous.
      We walked mostly in silence. I started walking across the parking lot towards the boba shop and she asked me "where are you going?" I turned back, confused, and pointed to the store. She just turned and walked away from me on a needlessly roundabout direction, following the sidewalk into the perpendicular path like she was an NPC who couldn't break her pathfinding. I wasn't even jaywalking or anything, and there weren't any cars. I just took a slight diagonal. Safe to say it was weird. We got our drinks and I started walking towards home. I was sufficiently weirded out at this point, and I just really wanted to go home and be done with this interaction. But she just kind of followed behind me, not saying anything. I walked all the way home with her on my tail and offered to take her empty boba cup when we got there. I invited her in and went to take care of the cups, and when I turned around I realized she was just standing at the door, not entering like there was some kind of forcefield or something keeping her out. I offered for her to come in again, and she just stood there. This was weird because she'd been in my home before in high school and it was no big deal. I put my backpack down and was just about to say goodbye when she asked “do you want to go on a quick walk?”
      If this had happened today, I would have politely declined and said goodbye, locked my door and moved on with my life. But at the time I wasn't confident in saying no to people, so I said “Sure, as long as it's short.” I was thinking 10, max 20 minutes around the block while she explained why she had contacted me and we could have an awkward talk clearing the air or something. What actually happened is she led me further and further away from my home until we had been walking for at least half an hour. She said she wanted to walk this trail that I was familiar with.

    • @violentabyss
      @violentabyss 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      (continued) I remember she insisted we walked on the left side of the street, even though the trail she said she wanted to take me on ran parallel a few blocks to the right. I asked her why and she replied with something about the flow of traffic, that she wanted to see oncoming cars, but it made no sense, and she kept looking around like she was expecting something or someone to come out at any point. I started thinking about what I would do if she did something crazy. I had my phone on me, and I knew the area well enough to get home even if my phone died, but we were getting uncomfortably far from home at this point.
      I asked, politely but firm “where are we going?” She replied “it's just one more street over.” So we crossed the street, and… nothing particularly remarkable about the area, just houses and yards. I stopped and asked her again, “where are we going?” And again, she said “it's just one more street.” Reluctantly, I followed her. She did this I swear at least six more times, claiming our destination was just one street away each time.
      I set a hard line for myself, three stoplights away, if she tried to take me further than that I would refuse and turn around. But as if she could tell she was losing me, she finally turned towards the actual direction of the trail.
      By the time we actually set foot on the trail, we were almost at the end of it. The path behind us which she skipped was pretty scenic with waterbirds, trees, flowers, and a river around it. But where we were headed, it was just concrete bridges and sewage runoff. She pointed to the horizon and said “there, I want to show you something.” I was really uncomfortable at this point, not just with her company, but I didn't have a jacket and it was starting to get cold, and the shoes I was wearing weren't great for long walks and started to hurt. I originally thought we'd be out for maybe 15 minutes, but it must have been an hour since we left home. Overcoming my social anxiety, I insisted we had walked far enough. She just kept pointing, “it's right there, we're almost there. Come on.” Where she was pointing, the scenic trail was past the end. The stream mixed with sewage and smelled horrible, and where it ran under the bridge it was nearly completely cloaked in shadow. The only visible structure was the dumpsters at the back of an office building. My soul told me I couldn't go under that bridge. Up to this point I thought I was humoring an old friend who had completely lost her social graces due to hard times and an abysmal upbringing. But as it got darker and darker, and as she kept insisting, I finally stood my ground. I leaned over a railing, gazing over the river and silently freaking out. I made up some excuse like “it's so pretty here, let's just pause.” I was so nervous, I was fidgeting with my foot, kicking up against a vertical metal pole of the fencing. Daisy was quiet, staring almost robotically into the water. She said a few things, a ridiculously long time between each disconnected sentiment. Meanwhile, I kicked the pole slightly too hard and it punctured through my shoe. I exclaimed in shock as the metal pole cut through the fabric of my shoe, grazing my foot inside. I was lucky that the pole struck just between my toes, only cutting me a little bit. Daisy just kept staring at the water, not reacting in the slightest. My shoe was stuck, and I asked her over and over for help getting it free. But she just kept staring into the water like she couldn't hear me. It took a full minute of struggling to free myself, and when I did I was ready to go. I told her, “I'm going back now. My foot is bleeding.” She looked at me dumbfounded, the sun beginning to set, and one last time pointed. “It's right there. Just under the bridge.”
      I said goodbye, lied and said it was nice to see her again and that I'd text her soon, and turned back. I called a friend and told her about everything that happened on my way home, and after making sure I wasn't being followed, checked my map. We had walked two and a half miles. So much for a short walk.
      The rational side of me wants to believe that Daisy was dissociative or something, not fully understanding what was going on around her. But another side of me doubts if that was even her. She definitely wasn't the same girl I knew from school. She was like some facsimile, a copy of Daisy made by someone uninformed of anything about her aside from her appearance. It felt eerie, the way that she would go dead quiet, or take minutes to respond to a question. But I never found out, where was she trying to take me? I know that trail, there's nothing there. The friend I called while I walked back offered that maybe Daisy was looking for a secluded place to dump my body, down the river or under the bridge. She even brought up the idea that maybe that Daisy was a skinwalker or something of that ilk. Something that wanted to mimic somebody I would recognize, but that i hadn't seen in long enough to forgive if she seemed different.
      Normally I would have called her crazy, but after the encounter I wasn't sure.
      When I got home I found out the whole truth. My parents told me Daisy had showed up at our front door out of the blue asking for me. I guess she remembered where I lived from that one time six years ago that we had dropped by. They offered for her to wait inside, but like when I invited her in, she wouldn't cross the doorway. Since my parents recognized her as my old friend, they were loose with information like my schedule and bus route, and that's how she knew where I'd be. They thought I'd invited her over and she'd shown up early, but I hadn't talked to her in years. We all agreed something was wrong with her.

    • @violentabyss
      @violentabyss 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      (continued) From then on we'd have a few more incidents with Daisy. She'd show up at my door uninvited again, now knowing when I'd be home. I told my parents i want comfortable telling her to leave to her face so they told her I was sick with Covid and couldn't see her. They gave her a solo cup of water and sent her away. A few days later, at night around 10pm she shows up again. This time she didn't knock, she just straight up tried the door handle. It was locked obviously, we'd been religious about locking it after the first encounter. So she walked around the side of the house and lurked there for around ten minutes. I can only assume she was trying to get in. I don't know what she was doing, she stood right in the blind spot of our security camera. But the next day my mom showed me the footage and we found a red solo cup at the foot of our side gate.
      I unblocked and texted her, warning her not to come by again trying to break into my house because she was scaring my family. She responded completely incoherently, completely sidestepping what I said. She said something about some TED talk, then some bogus math theory. Completely unrelated and nonsensical. I told her again not to come around or I'd call the police, and she said “I just wanted to return your cup.” Yeah, the disposable solo cup. It sounded like a cheap excuse to me. Eventually she stopped coming by, at least to my knowledge. Though it took me pleading with her to stop harassing my family and threatening the cops again. The last time she tried to get to me, she called my mom, I have no idea how Daisy even got her number. It still weirds me out to this day. My most rational assumption is that she was having issues with her mental health, which I did bring up to her before I had blocked her. I told her she was acting weird, that if she was on meds they weren't working for her and if she wasn't on meds she should look into it. She dismissed it, more incoherent thoughts thrown at me through text, but I think I at least got her to realize her demeanor was alarming. Whatever is going on with Daisy, if that even was the same person I first met in high school, I wish her well but she isn't my problem anymore.

    I wouldn't want the guy from the first story as my wilderness guide. He seemed lack the ability to identify a clearly dangerous situation and acted like someone having a mental episode is somehow not a threat. The guy in story 3 was that man's guardian angel, absolutely incredible that he was able to carry him like that and save his life.

      I agree but think the story is a load. I can't imagine a forest guide not carrying a firearm. With the exception of state and national forest staff that don't/ aren't required to frequent trails, it's basically unheard of. Referring to his knife as a "survival" knife is also a red flag.

    I hope there’s a movie based on that last account called “18” or something honoring that bada$$ who escaped.

    Does anyone have a theory about the german? All the other personal stories came off a little, "creative writing project" but that one rang true.

    correction to the last story. The idiot police actually despite being given very detailed information about the house and the Hunter himself chose not to believe the victim because of her bad career choice. It took far longer than it should have because of prejudice.

    Did you get a new microphone by chance? The narration isn't as bass heavy as your older videos. I listen to your stories to sleep, and always have to go into VLC's eq settings and bring the bass down. Sounded to me like a Shure SM7B. To my ears, those mics are too bass heavy. Don't know why those mics are so popular. The SM58 are cheaper and sound clearer and more balanced to my ears.

    I love this channel.
    But let’s talk about the general namby pamby feel that most of the people in these stories have. It’s ridiculous.
    “The vomit covered homeless man was now pressing a kitchen knife to my neck, but I didn’t want to be rude….so I waited to see his next move”.
    It’s infuriating. Reddit is not a place where humans post. I hate these people.
