Michter's isn't sourcing anymore. Before 2004 everything was sourced. In 2004, they contracted with Brown Foreman to contract distill for them. That lasted until 2016. In 2016 that contract ended and they started distilling all their own stuff. There's probably still some Brown Forman distillate in the regular Michter's, but it's also likely that it's all or mostly their own stuff by now given the heat cycling they do. Coincidentally, that timeframe supports when we got Early Times BIB and the Old Forester Rye. I've always believed those are both just the same michter's products, they just kept making them after the contract ended. But using cheaper barrels and a higher barrel entry proof.
I don't think they've produced anything that's been sold in stores yet based on the information on their website. It sounds experimental and very small scale. The bottles still say "bottled by Michter's" and not "distilled by Michter's". There would definitely be some kind of change in taste that people would recognize. Not to mention distributers and people in the bourbon community would be notifying everyone of this change. There's probably an ongoing contract with Brown Forman that hasn't expired. I could be wrong but it would be stupid to not change the label and nobody has outright confirmed the change has occurred.
Buffalo trace was my intro into bourbon neat. I found Michters last year and its now my absolute favorite sub 100 daily sipper. Hands down. Its about $40-45 here in CA where as BT is anywhere from $18-25. Very available. I’ll still pay more for the Michters. But i do have a store pick of BT that is amazing. If i could find it all the time, ER would be my go to. But that still isnt super available so i limit that to a weekend pour.
Great comparison. I have both on my shelf and never thought to do a head to head. When I can find Buffalo Trace it's $20 cheaper than Michter's...but I have to find it first. Michter's is way more available in WI.
Since Michters costs almost twice as much as Buffalo Trace at $40 vs $22 respectively here in Cali, I would hope that Mick is miles better than BT in the same way that the $22 BT would most likely be better than a $10 whiskey. Good to know that it's actually the case here this time. Thanks for the review.
I work at a SE Wisconsin liquor store. We aren't "privileged" enough to have Buffalo Trace. 3 cases since 2019. I have done the back to back. Michters was so close overall, but the Michters drinks slightly warmer. I have pointed people that way for the past few years, with that caveat. It's the closest product we carry.
After your review, I had to find and purchase a larceny C922. I wasn’t the biggest larceny fan, but after hearing so many good things, you got do what you gotta do. Sipping it now watching this, very good! But what next? I think I’m still gonna wait to see what hear before just blindly buying the next one. Cheers and Thanks Jason
Great video. This is interesting. I've never tried Michter's, but I sipped Buffalo Trace along with this video to see if I could guess which one it was based on your descriptions. And I totally thought the first glass was BT based on your descriptions. I guess I do get the "licorice" on BT, though I've always described it as just "cherry." I'll keep an eye out for Michter's now - can't wait to try it.
I would hope Michter's would win. I can get Buffalo Trace out here in CA for $19.99 all day long. Michter's $40-$45. That said I much prefer Michter's. Did just pick up 5 bottles of Eagle Rare for $31.99 each on sale at a Ralph's grocery store this weekend. Gave 2 away to friends. Drank one with friends at a party we went to and kept 2 for the bar.
Wow, that’s a shock. I love me some BT. $30 here in Michigan and the best value in Bourbon in my humble opinion. My daily drinker for sure. But now you got me wanting to give Michters another try.
Use CLEAR/TRANSPARENT Glencairn glasses for shows. It is helpful to have pours side by side, thus, comparing distillate colors. All things considered, another great show Jason. You are good at what you do. With this in mind, would you pay secondary on Michter's 10?
I would not pay secondary for Michters 10 unless I knew it was an exceptional single barrel. And yes ..I use colored glasses so I'm not influenced by the color of the whiskey
How about an “Available Single Barrel Double Bass” of Four Roses Single Barrel vs Russell’s Single Barrel? You can generally find these single barrels a lot easier than most.
Great video. As soon as you said “soft,” I knew which was which. Idea for a future Double Bass: Recently I got a bottle of Widow Jane Decadence. I thought it was delicious but over priced. On my first sip, it reminded me of Woodford Double Oaked, which is about half the price of WJD. I plan to do a blind with those two soon, myself.
I think it's crazy how hard it is for people in your area to get Buffalo Trace when it's distilled right next door. I saw a video from Kentucky where it was on a limit 1 table with a bunch of allocated bourbons... and that's in KY! Out here in CA it is readily available at every store in my town for $26/bottle.... blows my mind man....

I do like the Michters for a "daily", sweeter bourbon. IMHO, BT is solid, but still kinda "basic", and as such good but not worthy of all the hype. It's just good, but not exceptional.
I may have a poor batch of Michter’s bourbon. I love their standard rye SB’s…but I’m not at all a fan of their standard bourbon. I just set it out at parties now. I should do it blind again. Been a minute since I’ve done that. Cheers.

Yikes ,my town branch experience was chemically as well.
@@johnmorgan233 yep. Beautiful bottle, terrible bourbon.
Regular BT for me is a pass now, store pick BT SB is so much better. Michters is more my jam.
22$/L vs. 40$/750ml. yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Teachers versus Johnnie Walker Green
Buffalo Trace. 25.99……..Michter’s…….29.99……both at Indianapolis Sam’s Club
Shocker. I actually prefer Michter's.
Mmmmmm 🤤Muffalo
That Michters might beat the Blantons
I don’t think Michter’s is sourced anymore.
Magic spoon is legit, better than both those bourbons lol
Elmer t lee vs michters sourmash
Michters SB is like $50 in most places in NJ. Far too many other bourbons at that price or less that are better to me (4 Roses Single Barrel, RR 10, etc.) so I never buy it.
Yeah 50 is too much
