Michter's isn't sourcing anymore. Before 2004 everything was sourced. In 2004, they contracted with Brown Foreman to contract distill for them. That lasted until 2016. In 2016 that contract ended and they started distilling all their own stuff. There's probably still some Brown Forman distillate in the regular Michter's, but it's also likely that it's all or mostly their own stuff by now given the heat cycling they do.
Coincidentally, that timeframe supports when we got Early Times BIB and the Old Forester Rye. I've always believed those are both just the same michter's products, they just kept making them after the contract ended. But using cheaper barrels and a higher barrel entry proof.

I don't think they've produced anything that's been sold in stores yet based on the information on their website. It sounds experimental and very small scale. The bottles still say "bottled by Michter's" and not "distilled by Michter's". There would definitely be some kind of change in taste that people would recognize. Not to mention distributers and people in the bourbon community would be notifying everyone of this change. There's probably an ongoing contract with Brown Forman that hasn't expired. I could be wrong but it would be stupid to not change the label and nobody has outright confirmed the change has occurred.

Since Michters costs almost twice as much as Buffalo Trace at $40 vs $22 respectively here in Cali, I would hope that Mick is miles better than BT in the same way that the $22 BT would most likely be better than a $10 whiskey. Good to know that it's actually the case here this time. Thanks for the review.

Buffalo trace was my intro into bourbon neat. I found Michters last year and its now my absolute favorite sub 100 daily sipper. Hands down. Its about $40-45 here in CA where as BT is anywhere from $18-25. Very available. I’ll still pay more for the Michters. But i do have a store pick of BT that is amazing.
If i could find it all the time, ER would be my go to. But that still isnt super available so i limit that to a weekend pour.

I would hope Michter's would win. I can get Buffalo Trace out here in CA for $19.99 all day long. Michter's $40-$45. That said I much prefer Michter's. Did just pick up 5 bottles of Eagle Rare for $31.99 each on sale at a Ralph's grocery store this weekend. Gave 2 away to friends. Drank one with friends at a party we went to and kept 2 for the bar.

I work at a SE Wisconsin liquor store. We aren't "privileged" enough to have Buffalo Trace. 3 cases since 2019. I have done the back to back. Michters was so close overall, but the Michters drinks slightly warmer. I have pointed people that way for the past few years, with that caveat. It's the closest product we carry.

In my area, CT/NY, Buffalo Trace is $50 when you can find it. That puts it right in the same price as Michter's Small Batch. The head to head is legit since there is no price difference. At equal price I prefer the Michter's however if Buffalo Trace ever gets back to is real MSRP I'd go that instead.

Interesting. I've just purchased my first bottle of Buffalo Trace (which I'm drinking for the first time as I watch this and type my comment) and the last bourbon I had was a Michter's, and the memory of the Michter's seems to be better than the Buffalo trace.
But let me be clear: I'm a heathen because I drink any bourbon with classic coca-cola. I've tried drinking it straight with a sprig of mint, but it's too bitter. I can't stand whiskey or vodka or gin, but when I discovered Bourbon in my late teens (1960s - I'm 72 now) I thought it was the nectar of the gods. Over the years I've drunk mostly Jim Beam (because it's cheaper than the rest of the available bourbons in New Zealand and it's pretty smooth, and it's also usually the only bourbon we see in bars here) and I tried Jack Daniells once but let's face it - it's NOT bourbon, it's just American whiskey. JD had a huge advertising budget years ago, and I recall all the advertising in Playboy magazine (excellent articles and stories - seriously) that proclaimed how historic its brewery was along with lots of black and white photos. Sure sucked me in, but only once and never since (and I was young and foolish back then).
As I got older I forgot about bourbon and drank red wine and beer, but in the last few years I've decided to revert back to my mis-spent youth and imbibe a good bourbon every now and then. My son bought me some Jim Beam Devil's Cut and I enjoyed it, but a trip to Wellington two yeasr ago led me into a small bar tucked in an alley, and I tried, for the first time, a Michter's and coke. Man, what a revelation - it was the smoothest, sweetest, most flavorsome bourbon I've ever had (even though it cost NZ$20 per glass with coke). I even bought two glasses for me and two for my colleague. Since then I've gone through two bottles but then I tried Makers Mark. Big reputation from what I've read, but nothing special in my eyes. You guys in the USA need to remember that although we in NZ import a lot of different bourbons, the price here is not cheap (eg, NZ$600 for a 700 mL bottle of Blanton's BLACK bourbon, or NZ$72 for the 700 mL Buffalo Trace I just bought and NZ$110 for the Michter's 700 mL.
Another thing that I don't see mentioned very often is that the higher the alcohol content then the less flavorsome. This is because the alcohol dampens most flavors (similar to a really hot Indian curry compared to a less-hot but more flavorsome curry) so I'd like to try a bourbon with a lower alcohol content sometime if any commenters can point me to one - thanks in advance.
Anyway, bottom lie is that as of right now, half-way through my Buffalo Trace and coke, I think I'll be going back to the Michter's despite the higher cost in NZ. Last point: by the time we reach our 4th of 5th glass, they all taste pretty good.

Out here in CA it is readily available at every store in my town for $26/bottle.... blows my mind man....

Always love the content! How about an all Michters side by side utilizing all of their expressions?

Had to laugh... when I heard "double bass," I pictured a symphony orchestra. 😂 🤷

Opinion | Respectfully disagree. Michter’s drinks like water to me. I get nothing from it in the palate that’s satisfying. It’s like the Coors Light of Bourbon. For me, at least the BT punches through a bit with some great flavors. Overall, just much more satisfying to my palate. So basically the complete opposite, which is very interesting.

Is anyone really selling BT for $40? I see it for $25 (when it’s available)

I was thinking the one you picked would be the Buffalo Trace. I opened a Michter's the other night and both my friend and I didn't like it. Almost as chemically and bad as Town Branch I picked up in Columbus a few years ago.

Yikes ,my town branch experience was chemically as well.

    I don’t think Michter’s is sourced anymore.
