  • The pronunciation of words changes when they're in a sentence and we stress the words that carry the meaning and de-stress the rest. Learn the secret of English sentence stress timing in this video, along with some great ways to practise.

    Wow God, I was trying to forget the socks' music. I was annoyng everybody in my home. Right now I remembered it and can't stop with that!!! It's so cool. 🎶 Black socks never get dirty, the longer you wear them the blacker they get... Oh God, It doesn't go out of my mind!

      Oh dear @Alex! We consulted our medical team about the catchy tune problem and I'm afraid the prognosis isn't good. Once stuck in your head the only way to get rid of it is to replace it with an even catchier tune - one that's even harder to forget. The doctors say that you can get some relief by watching our videos though. We prescribe a video a day. :-)

    WOW! All your videos I've been watching up until now were really interesting, funny and very informative. But this one is definitely the most awesome one! :D
    I know how hard it is to explain stress timing and rhythm for non-native learners.
    Your video was so expressive and creative! You made this topic so comprehensible! Thank you so much for this!
    ... feels a bit like watching music video clips by Eminem :D
    And I think I will spend the next time observing how Germans stress and destress while talking. I think we are doing pretty much the same when it comes to stressijng and destrssing, but not that rhythmic. We sound quite steady without pitch variation. ô_Ô
    Due to the many glottal stops in German langauge non-natives tend to think we're grumpy ^///^

      Thanks so much Steffi. This video has a story. In 2016 we won a TH-cam prize which was to go to NYC for a week with some other promising TH-camrs and receive some training. One of my team mates has a beat box channel and the beatboxers were actually world class. I think one has since won a world championship. When I realised they'd be in the studio I asked them to perform a the little skit for me, but in my excitement, I forgot to ask them to remove clothing and badges with logos. I had to spend days rotoscoping them out because TH-cam doesn't allow them. The deadline was so fast, I didn't have time to fix some of the lighting issues. But maybe one day I'll be able to go back and fix it and make this video look how I'd like it to be.

    • @steffis4480
      @steffis4480 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! 😱 What an incredible story! It is super cool, that you did ask them despite your excitement 😍
      Argh it's really irritating, even though a naive follower like me can't see any light "problems".
      But it's understandable that if you watch this video, these memories pop up 😅
      This is one of my favorite videos, nevertheless 😍😍😍

    "And it's like music because the beat can change. If the beat stayed the same, we'd

    • @SimpleEnglishVideos
      @SimpleEnglishVideos  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's because English poetry typically follows an 'iambic pentameter' structure. The rhythm of this is: da-DUM, da-DUM, da-Dum, da-DUM. However when we speak English we often break away from this natural rhythm.

      Yes, it's curious how we do this. We need to replace some carpeting in our house and I was thinking we might try to have a no shoes policy when we do. But it could be a bit awkward when guests come, because it's not the custom here.
