You’re like a British Bob Ross! (A compliment, I assure you) (Bob Ross was a famous landscape artist in America. Know for his calm demeanor and passion for his hobby) Awesome video. Great information.
And just here, yes I think is a happy little tree, all vibrant and strong here in the woods so What I'm going to do is just gently wrap my hammockstrap around him, ever so easily so as not to damage his beautiful bark, Some people like to put a little towel over the strapping just as a bit of a cushion for added care but I'm not going to do that today, maybe another time, we'll see...
This guy is the Bob Ross of Bushcraft. I found his hammock video laying in bed. Not only did I learn a lot, I also feel at peace enough to finally sleep. He's so polite and gentle. I feel like he read me a story before bed.
If you tie a length of cord to the bottom zip on your bug net and put a small carabiner on the other end and clip it onto your ridgeline for the bug net, you don't have to struggle to pull up the zip. You just pull on the cord and it fastens up the zipper until it's close enough to reach comfortably
That’s very kind of you to say so, it doesn’t sound like that to me though, funny how others see us and we see ourselves. Very much appreciate your comments
Obviously it a personal think as to what is most comfortable for each person. I think you will find if you get more of a dip in your hammock hang you can then shift to lay across the hammock diagonal, not with it,.. you will get rid of that banana bend you have and lay flat,.. for most people it's much more comfortable. Thanks for sharing your tips.
I understand, with the DD's I find personally find that this is quite comfy, I'm looking for a bigger hammock at some point though to do exactly as you said. Appreciate your Comms,
@Isle of Wight Bushcraft Try the Frontline XL at 3m. With the spreader poles and 1.8m width it's massive. I'm a side sleeper and and I don't find the cross lay position works. Yes, it's flat-ish but you still end up with fabric in your face, and I think you'll find you need an UQ. If you want as close to a 'mattress' experience as possible what you're doing is perfect. Most of the advice for hammocks is based on 'snorers' (aka backsleepers) as far as I can tell. :)
Some great tip's there Shane, not done an over night in my hammock yet but ill remember this for when i do. It's been mad busy for me this spring so enjoying it through everyone's vid's, love the close up's of the wild flower's. Got Easter off so just a few more day's work and away we go. Cheer's mate for another enjoyable watch.
Thank you Jim. Nice to hear from you again. I'm sure you'll love sleeping out in the hammock in the woods. It's lovely waking up in the morning hearing the birds and do forth. Hope your trip goes well bud. Take care Jim. Seeya
I use the same pad and tie outs with my hammock rig, and I agree it adds to the system and makes for a comfy experience, that pad is very light too which I love, mush lighter than an underquilt. I have been a fan off the therma rest pads for many years, one of my first outings was a winter camp /hike in Canada, and it was cold. when I got to camp, I set up my tent and used the pad to sit on outside the tent while I cooked with my little stove. I noticed that the snow that was falling and getting on the other end of the pad was melting due to heat from my butt circulating thru the pad, needless to say I have one with me always now. I am glad these new ones are smaller and lighter than the older style, but I still have a full size old one in my home and a half size older one in my Jeep, the x therm neo air, one i have in my lightweight camp/hiking kit and I use it the same way in my hammock. another great video, thank you sir.
Excellent video and awesome mods to your hammock. I've never slept in a hammock, but with these mods I could now easily be persuaded to do so. A very nice springtime touch to wild camping. Your ideas are much appreciated, thanks. Take care...
I use a Neo Air when tent camping which is not that often. I hammock camp 95% of the time. Then I like to use a Therm-a-rest self inflating mummy shaped mattress. I let it inflate about 3/4 way and adjust it when I'm in the hammock , normally it between 1/2 and 3/4 inflated. That way it can conform to my body and the hammock at the same time. One of the multitude of the benefits of a hammock is it's ability to support all of the body , all 100% of it. One of the hammocks I use is the Warbonnet Blackbird and it has the shock cords attached to make it wider. Plus I can sleep straight of diagonally in it.
Loved the vid and all the comments and your helpful replies thanks. I just bought an alton goods hammock with a rectangular pad and hoping it will be ok like a mummy type. I sleep poorly and only on sides so appreciate all your tips and feedback. I have an idea to build a coffin shaped wooden spine insert if i need to as planning on being in it for long periods. Thanks again mate. Uniquely beneficial!😊
Excellent vid with some nice ideas, I'm an underquilt guy, personal preferance, but I like the warm cocooned feeling, Iside sleep, and then I just throw my sleeping bag over me as a quilt, but yeah, how you 'hammock' is a very personal thing
Great video. Are you not lying asymmetrical? I've always heard lying straight on was less comfortable. I'm just getting into hammock camping (beginning to experience more aches and pains on the ground) and most videos I've seen say to lay a little "off line" to sleep flatter. I do LOVE the sleep pad though. A lot less expensive than an under quilt.
Great mods pinning out the sides and the tip making sure the baffles are horizontal is definitely smart tips. The the tarp also from DD? What size is that? Also another tip from me I like to add a pull string onto the mosquito net so I can generally reach it easier to close .
Hi Shane, is that all wild garlic around you?? also can you give me the name of that sleep pad please with a price, and where I maybe able to purchase it from, thanks for sharing your video and improvements for a better nights sleep, I hope to be trying that very soon, cheers. ATB Ray
Thank you so much for producing a beautiful scenic video and sharing with us informative hacks for hammock camping....It shows how creative and inventive people become when exploring nature and making a comfortable adjustments so that we can enjoy God's creation...
Your hammock looks very much like mine which is a Tenth Wonder, mine has a double layer of material underneath with a zip, this creates an envelope that you can put in such things as a quilt or sleep mat. I have never thought of putting in an inflatable mattress before as far as the small carabiner on top I have 3mm shock cord to hold it up .
Great filming Shane and i like that music with the nature shots very relaxing. Clever mods and helpful tips on the shapes of the Mat. Was that wild garlic you were in if so yummy. Cheers Phil
This was very helpful thank you. The loose fabric on the sides was causing my small items to fall out of the pockets, but I think your trick about pegging out the sides will resolve that. ATB
I play guitar and love music and so put my own compositions together sometimes for my vids. A lot of the music you’ll hear on my channel is stuff I’ve done myself, and so isn’t available. I might be able to send it to you as attachment, but I’m not sure. Anyway, appreciate your comments .thankyou
Superb Shane as always. Those mods work really well. You could also add some bungee cord to your mozzi net zips inside and out to make zipping and unzipping easier. I like your pack...is it the LK35? Thank you for sharing. Happy wandering.
Great video Shane. Like the mods a lot. A sleeping pad with that mummy shape is a great fit in most hammocks. I have to get me one of those ;) As far as I can see the large version of the NeoAir XTherm also has this mummy shape. For sleeping on the ground I've got the NeoAir AllSeason which is also great, but unfortunately its rectangular. Take care :)
Many thanks for the recommendation on the Thermarest Mat as I was just about to replace my damaged Exped 7 UL LW Down mat and these Thermarest are cheaper and better suited to a tarp! as you say.
Hi Shane, as you made me think and look at the different style of mats, I ended up buying a Nemo Astro Insulated lite. It's oblong like the Exped so hoping it still works in a DD Travel hammock that I've just ordered. Plus a DD 4x4 mc tarp. Exciting times, never had a hammock before. All this kit going in my Swedish LK35. Fantastic piece of kit.

That was a 'while' back - round a half century :-) late sixties, early seventies. Hammok's at the local distro center so should be here tomorrow. Today was hoar frost and minus 5 with sunshine - loe in the sky. Nice to hang the mat but for that idea, shame it'll warm again, meaning damp clam cold. All the best.
Hi Jim, thanks for your comments. Yes I do cross lay when not using pad, which gives a flatter angle to lie, but I'm just not keen on hammock compressing in on from all sides. I find a straight lay with pad really nice. I use DD hammock
Thank you mark, some prefer underquilts, but for me I prefer having a nice stable pad to sleep on in hammock. I’ve also found that if you put one of those cheapo closed cell foam sleep mats under the sleep pad, it doesn’t slide around so much.
I like the sleep pad idea. Question though, can you lie on the diagonal while using the sleep pad ? Otherwise I would be worried about not lying flat. That's a big issue when it comes to comfort.
You can lie diagonally with the therma rest or any sleeping pad.. it just takes a little bit of practice.. and if you put it under in the hammock's under sleeve it tends to move less during the night sleep. If you are on the cold side of people, put a heat reflector (ones used for cars front windshield are the cheapest and do great job) under the therma rest and you are good for up to -15oC with a very good winter bag. Colder temps or wet cold requires more insulation :)

Have you ever tried one of these bridge hammocks I think that's what they are called they use spacer bars at either end. Hi I loved your video. Great production. Can you please clarify which DD Hammock you are using> i look forward to hearing from you and thank you in anticipation
Thanks lofty, it’s the DD travel hammock. They have double layer at bottom, waterproof too, so you can use them on the ground as well as a bivvy, or just as a ground sheet with the bug net raised. Very versatile. Hope this helps
A sleeping pad will never stay in the hammock as you move around while you sleep. Unless you want to find out the hard way, save the time and get an underquilt.
Hi Shane, great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm fairly new to hammock camping and recently spent first night out in DD Frontline XL (are you using the XL model in this video?). Despite being reasonably warm and comfy, I wasn't able to properly nod off and the gather issue that you describe has been a thorn in my side to an otherwise perfect set up. Great tips - keep doing what you're doing! 👍🏻
Many thanks TS. It takes a couple of times out in hammock to become accustomed to sleeping in one, but I have found this xtherm sleep to make a big difference when in the hammock, making much more comfy and conducive to sleep. Hope this helps.
I like your hiking pants Shane. I cant tell if your pants are snake bite resistant or not. It would be cool to know what brand they are. They look comfortable.
Many thanks Erik, they’re actually Dunlop’s, which aren’t bad, but now I have Fjallraven Barents Pro, which are excellent, not snake bite proof, but mozzy proof.
Thx, liked the idea of poking a hole with a hot screw driver. People, keep in mind if one has a bad back or multiple nights on the hammock in a row to sleep diagonally, for a flatter surface.
You’ll love this one. th-cam.com/video/WyFWpCUDD4g/w-d-xo.html

Worth a do
Looking into that hammock with the sleep pad and hearing you say "comfortable, comfortable " makes me ready for a healthy nap!!
😂😂, oooh yeh, can’t beat a healthy nap. Appreciate Comms.
Warbonnet Outdoors Ridgerunner with an underquilt is another great option for a comfortable sleep.

Aw thank you Gareth, appreciate your encouraging comments.
you make lovely videos. ...so relaxing and reassuring. ....thanks Shane.
nice spring weather already :-) enjoy.
Thank you John. That's really nice of you to say so.

Thanks CT. the sleep pad is the " Thermarest neo-lite Xtherm" in regular. I use it for hiking as well. Brilliant bit of kit.

Why did you not place the sleep pad between the layers of the hammock vs. placing it inside the hammock? It looks like a DD hammock
Wouldn't it be easier to use a couple lengths of Peks tubing under the mat as spreaders instead of the added lines to form out the hammock?
I don’t know, try it and let me know. Thanks for your comments.
Nice modifications shane, i have a rectangular sleep mat and i find it keeps the hammock spread nicely...atb...jeff.

Have you found it up to the job?
Most definitely, I can hammock under this and have a nice amount of seating area and work area if it’s raining.

Hello. How does this air pad go for hot and cold nights?
It's a great pad, I use it a little deflated in the hammock. Works a treat for me.
I like the sleep pad idea. Question though, can you lie on the diagonal while using the sleep pad ? Otherwise I would be worried about not lying flat. That's a big issue when it comes to comfort.

U is not good for me though
Hi I loved your video. Great production. Can you please clarify which DD Hammock you are using> i look forward to hearing from you and thank you in anticipation
Thanks lofty, it’s the DD travel hammock. They have double layer at bottom, waterproof too, so you can use them on the ground as well as a bivvy, or just as a ground sheet with the bug net raised. Very versatile. Hope this helps
What brand is this tarp? Thx for answer.
It’s the DD hammocks 4x4 multi cam. Hope this helps
Isle of Wight Bushcraft yes Thx
Hi Shane.
Can you lay on your side on the pad?
Atb. Richard.
Yes I can and often do, I’m a bit of a side sleeper too.
A sleeping pad will never stay in the hammock as you move around while you sleep. Unless you want to find out the hard way, save the time and get an underquilt.
I am never uncomfortable in my DD hammock it's staying a sleep I have problems with..
Great video mate your intro was great
I sleep ok in hammock, but don't like hammock compressing in on me. Funny how we all differ. Thanks dan
Isle of Wight Bushcraft i have the DD hammocks self Inflating hammocks mat that works great in the hammock and only £20
Just bought my first hammock really comfy will try these mods thanks shane ATB Paul

No sorry Sean, it’s the D 4x4 multi cam
Excellent video and great mods. Many thanks.

I prefer a mat instead of a underquilt. Top tip on the bug net I'll be modding mine next time I'm out. Atb
Many thanks. MA. Me too
Hurry up with the story, other wise good video new sub
You could do well with adding some affiliate links in the description to some of the kit you use -- intrigued by your roll mat.
I’ll bear it in mind.
Just found your channel Sir. It's very inspired, thanks for sharing this great info☺👌
Thank you Ryan, welcome aboard my friend
Awesome cinematography intro! DD Hammocks have now included these mods on their Frontline range I believe?

Thank you Ellis for your nice comments, I appreciate it my friend.
What hammock are you using in this video? Thanks
Looks ssso comfortable!

Nice mod Shane. Im going to use that guy system on my snugpak hammock.
Hope it works for you, appreciate your Comms
I will let you know how I find it.
Thanks for the info and quick reply Shane
No problem
Some excellent ideas there mate. Thanks for sharing 😉
Colin Enright thanks Colin, hope you’re well mate
Thx, liked the idea of poking a hole with a hot screw driver.
People, keep in mind if one has a bad back or multiple nights on the hammock in a row to sleep diagonally, for a flatter surface.
Many thanks
