Top Watches I'm BUYING in 2023: Collectible Luxury Watches From Rolex, Patek, and Vacheron

  • Tim Mosso's watch collection doesn't grow often, but when it does, he adds watches that he loves - none other. But not every watch will be available forever, so tonight's show sorts the imminent investment watches from those watches that will remain affordable. Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin watches feature prominently in tonight's show. Tim outlines the best luxury watches to buy in 2023.
    While never popular during its 2005-2014 production run, the Rolex Cellini Prince remains as under appreciated as it is unique. Four versions of the Cellini Prince were produced, but the yellow gold Rolex reference 5440/8 is the most distinctive. The display caseback over caliber 7040 remains a Prince exclusive, and this is the only Rolex watch ever to reach production status with a sapphire display caseback. Rolex designed the dial of the Cellini Prince to echo the decoration of the movement, and the yellow gold variant is the most dramatic combination by far. For good measure, Rolex engraved the case flanks with a sunray motif. Despite its rarity and unique design, the Cellini Prince 5440/8 remains a bargain, and sound examples can be purchased for less than the original retail price of $14,100.
    The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 remains a favorite subject of social media and speculative sales, but Tim has no interest in the discontinued sports watch. Instead, his favorite Patek watch is the 5236P inline perpetual calendar. This 41.3mm 2021 model debut builds on the design language of the previous 5235G annual calendar.
    However, the platinum 5236P is a perpetual calendar, and it borrows a unique "American calendar" day/date/month format featured on previous Patek Philippe pocket watches. The case of the 5236P is inspired by the vintage 3448 perpetual calendar. Dial side design of this watch includes a gradient blue fade and vertical satin brushed texture. A micro-rotor automatic movement provides 48 hours of power reserve to the perpetual calendar and time display.
    Vacheron Constantin is a historic rival to Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, but its watches often are overlooked for decades longer than those of its two peers. The Vacheron Constantin Malte Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, reference 47112, is a rare gem whose time in the sun is approaching.
    This 39mm perpetual calendar includes distinctive flared "Maltese Cross" lugs that impart massive character and brand-distinctive beauty. Launched in 2000, this complicated chronograph was offered in platinum and yellow gold. Both versions include a hinged "hunter" caseback over a Lemania-based manual wind chronograph caliber. The perpetual calendar module is programmed to read the correct day, date, month, and leap year phase until the year 2100. While $50,000 - $60,000 is not "cheap" by any means, it is worth noting that the similarly sized and Lemania powered Patek Philippe 5970 can trade at over six times the price of a Vacheron 47112 in mint condition. And for good measure, the 47112 in platinum is the watch worn by Colin Farrell in the cinematic adaptation of Miami Vice.
    All of this plus watch collector wrist shots will be featured in this episode of "Watches Tonight!"
    Additional watches discussed in this episode include the Oris Aquis Calibre 400, the Audemars Piguet Star Wheel 25720, the IWC Grande Complication 3770, the IWC Tribute to Pallweber 5050-03, the Girard Perregaux Laureato 42 Eternity Edition, the Breguet Tradition 7027, and the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra Light.

    Just to correct Tim slightly: Queen Elizabeth II was a car enthusiast but she wasn't always "driven."
    In WW2 she was an ambulance driver, but also trained as a vehicle mechanic. During her wartime service with the ATS she also became quite an accomplished motorcyclist. Whenever possible (even in her later years) she usually preferred to drive and not be driven, be it a Range Rover, or (what was apparently her favourite car) a Land Rover.
    Visiting heads of state, guests invited to her home, journalists, through to photographers arriving to document the Queen in some location or other, were often surprised to find out that their driver was Queen Elizabeth.
    She was often seen driving around her Scottish home (at quite a speed) alone in her Land Rover (on road and off-road) with her protection officers following in another vehicle behind.

      Good choice! The IWC is beyond belief. We've had the white dial 3770, but not the -17... at least not yet. Eventually, it will happy, and then I'll have put up or shut up on that front!

    Rolex may wear the crown for Swiss manufacturers, but Tim wears the crown in the TH-cam watch universe! I am a value buyer, and Tim always out performs the competition with your recommendations. I am still kicking myself for not buying the 2 tone/steel & yellow gold Daytona you recommended about 2 years ago for $18,000, now the same watch is going for $24,000 in today's market. Thank you for using your expertise to recommend watches are great finds, and offer great value at so many different price points.

    6:41 I owned a 42mm Duometre yellow gold Q6011420. I had it sent to JLC for a repair and sold it right before COVID. Today it’s probably with 10k more. Beautiful timepiece with the German Nickel movement.

    Who's having the best level of finishing between Patek and Vacheron :
    - Calatrava vs Traditionnelle ?
    - Overseas vs Nautilus ?
    - Malte perpetual chrono vs 5970 ?
    Thanks for your job , Tim . Cheers .

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It varies from model to model. There are many Calatravas and Traditionnelle/Patrimonies. In general, VCs with the 1400 are better than Pateks with the 215. VC's JLC-based 1003 in solid yellow gold is extraordinary and surpasses any basic Patek auto or manual wind. The Overseas and Nautilus movements are equivalents in quality and detail. Patek's new 30-255 is a bit finer in architecture, but it lacks the 4400s sexy interior angle on the main bridge.

      Tim

    hi Tim, loved your channel very much! i am standing in front of the Montblanc door for a while thinkg buying one of there chronographs with Minerva movement. there are 3 options for me now: the 2021 version 1858 chrono origins in 46mm with bonze case and 16.29 movement and a special folding case back; the 2017 version 1858 chrono in 44mm with salmon dial also with 16.29 movement and the 2019 version split second also in Bronze but with 16.31 movement. all three watches are beautiful. i think the 1858 origins is just a little bit more special although it's a bit too big. but it is by no means an everyday watch. i would like to hear your openien. thank you so much! wish you a nice day!

    I may be mistaken but the mythical Oris Airstream collab I think was made in a limited production run of 3. For the North American market only. I was fortunate enough to see one at my AD earlier this year, where my dad was able to score the Aquis Dumpster Diver in 41mm. There are two pivotal events in your life, the first time you see an Oscar Mayer Weinermobile and of course the first time you see the mythical Oris Airstream collab.

      @the1916companywatchreviews ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've wondered about this. On the one hand, a fortune was spent on designing the mechanism. On the other hand, Patek does occasionally build niche models in short runs. We'll see, but I suspect it will be around for a while. The 5235 came out in 2011, and it's still with us in rose gold. Perhaps the compromise will be a long run for the 5236 but a short run for the platinum model.

    Tim, I love your show and years of good content! But, dude, you've got to drop your grudge against François-Paul Journe. It comes out at times and it's just not becoming of a respected professional like you. We get it, FP can be a bit of a handful, and years ago at dinner he insensitively dissed your JLC Duometre. To "randomly" choose to compare the finishing on the Chronometre Bleu to the finishing on the Breguet Tradition was a little transparent. And it just so happens to be in the same show that you promoted the JLC Duometre once again.🙄 Can we please just get past this? And for the record, the Tradition and the CB are two very different watches intended for two very different market segments, though I happen to think the CB is quite well finished and a very cool piece. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to many more great shows! Respectfully yours-

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No hard feelings - it's just a matter of opinion.
      The Tradition is very much an alternative to the CB. They're similarly sized dress watches. People make choices like that every day in my business. There's absolutely nothing "hostile" about suggesting that a $16,000 alternative might be a smarter buy. I do that as a gesture of good will and faith to the watch collector community, because you'd better believe I have a CB -- right now -- to sell you if money isn't an object to you. For most people, money **IS** an object, so I suggest alternatives that offer quality for less cash. I can confidently recommend the Breguet over a CB from firsthand experience. Somebody will be glad to consider alternatives that might make him more happy for less. Most dealers will push clients to buy the most expensive watch; we don't, and I don't.
      Most of the ribbing of Montres Journe is a joke, and viewers who have watched me for a while know that. You should know that I've had lots of 1-on-1 time with Journe to know him better. Not many folks have. I've never said anything insulting about the man, just that he has a quirky personality. Plus, the people at the FPJ factory don't worry about my sober approach to the brand, and we're on good terms. Separately, I like the Duometre line, so expect to see it again at some point in the future... or I could talk exclusively about under-appreciated brands like Rolex and RM that struggle to gain attention on social media. In all seriousness, I'd get more views if I did, but I won't.
      Best,
      Tim
