My Hero Academia vs Naruto - The Tournament Arc

  • The tournament arc is a staple of Shounen Jump, so it's an easy element to bring up when comparing two titles from this publication. However, not all tournaments seek to achieve the same result, which is why I'll be taking a look at My Hero Academia's Sports Festival in comparison to Naruto's Chunin Exams to see where the strengths and weaknesses of each respective arc lie.
Here's the link to a Kishimoto interview where I got some of my talking points from: naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:1...

Yeah narutos chunin scenes and the zabuza arc I feel were so intelligent with all the ideologies being challenged. It was interesting how everyone was bringing some serious personal vendettas and childhood trauma to their fights. Bnha's tournament was fun and light. Not alot of strategic play or people being plain op so there was no match. Short and sweet is the right word.

Personal stories of many characters are being explored in the Chunnin Exam especially Naruto, Sasuke, Lee, Neji and Gaara, and you think only My Hero progress the characters goals and motivations in the tournament arc.
I know you will never change your mind but at least give legit reasons on why you think it's better, not outright bullshit lies.
They didn't bring in villains in the tournament arc in MHA because the trash ass League of Villains just invaded a while ago and did absolutely nothing.
Oh and did I mentioned MHA villains are way inferior? And no it's not because "tHe AuthoR waNt tHe VilLainS tO gRow wITh tHe MaiN cHarACtErs", even AFO was one of the trashiest overlord in anime ever. Only Stain was good and he had a few chapters of screentime.

Strictly in my opinion, the stakes and emotion was stronger in Naruto’s arc. I was genuinely thinking certain characters would die in Naruto’s arc as the fights were far more brutal. Rock Lee and Hinata’s fights were far more emotional to me than Todoroki’s father stuff. Plus the naruto abilities were just more interesting. We were seeing for the first time what they all could do. Rock lee being the greatest surprise

    • @vortexmonkey5619
      @vortexmonkey5619 5 ปีที่แล้ว +386

@@KingHalbatorix that's completely not true at all lul. There were also some amazing fights even during the chunin exams like Hinata vs Neji where Hinata tried to prove Neji wrong where she pushes herself to change her fate against Neji and impress Naruto, but when she loses, she'll have a reason to keep training harder than ever so the next time she fights in front of Naruto she'll be able to make an impression on him. Not only as someone who wants to be praised by the one she looks up to but also to be finally seen by the one she loves which she does in the Naruto vs Pain fight. Also the whole anime of Naruto is around 750-800 episodes so your saying Obito vs Kakashi, Naruto vs Neji, Taka vs The Seven Kage, really any akatsuki fight, and all the Naruto vs Sasuke fights aren't amazing? Also (bc of the way Naruto's cast is and MHA's cast is I understand that MHA doesn't do much compared to Naruto on the tournament arc but still) Naruto even shows off everything that every important kid character that we'll see in the future wants to be. Why they want to become Ninja and what they want out of it and what their abilities are at their max while MHA you don't even see Toru at all and it's unclear as to why everyone wants to become a hero or what kind of hero they even want to be (for example Kirishima and Mina later on down the road). I will admit MHA has more quality over quantity kind of fights compared to Naruto but really the only one imo that's even Rock Lee vs Gaara tier is the Kirishima fight (again not sure where you are so not gonna say anymore about that one). I'm sure MHA by the end of it's run will have more and more fights that'll only get better with time but I wouldn't say it deserves the pedestal your giving it just yet (and that's just saying if the story can keep this up in the long run due to how mangas get worse over time due to the sheer fact that shonen doesn't care about the human limits and makes you have to make a new manga chapter on a really tight schedule where they eventually get worn out and possibly lose interest). MHA is still great but it's not THAT great of a show. At least in my eyes, but you can't say Naruto didn't have a lot of amazing fights and philosophies of what a ninja or hero is and should be and how to keep peace in the world and such.

I don't think Todoroki necessarily 'compromised' with Midoriya.
Izuku wasn't arguing him to embrace his father, but to accept and apply his power. And although Shoto gave in at the spur-of-moment, Horikoshi understands and recognises in his work that it takes time for people to reconsider and adjust their beliefs.

The weird thing is that Horikoshi kind of goes for a middle ground. In his fight with Bakugo, Todoroki decides to forfeit the match rather than use his left side, but he immediately uses it against Stain afterwards. Therefore I do feel it was more of a spur-of-the-moment decision.

      Gemnist Forward. I like that
Humanity is standing at the threshold of a monumental transformation. A shift in conciseness without precedent. At the very least, you probably sense this at some level. But if you’ve been paying attention, you can see the changes beginning to unfold, and it’s accelerating. More and more people are opening their eyes, and reaching for the courage to stand up. It’s still a struggle. Like a child making its first steps. And in these early stages as the wool is pulled from our eyes, what we see can be terrifying. There is a dark side, and it’s been there for many generations. Now you’re starting to see it for what it is. And that’s the first step. The second step is to see yourself for what YOU really are. And to live up to your real potential. You are NOT below these men who claim your favorite show is trash! You were NOT born to contain your excitement or hide your love! You were not born to live a life of servitude to social status! YOU WERE NOT BORN TO LET OTHERS THINK FOR YOU OR DICTATE YOUR PATH IN LIFE!! YOU ARE CAPABLE OF SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS!!!!
But we’re only going to get there if we stop living in fear
And we take. Our Power. Back.
Contrary to what some would have you believe, we are legion, and they are few. Their strength is OUR strength. Their influence is nothing but the play on our own insecurities, and the only thing keeping us from reclaiming our pride is the walls in our own minds.
Some would do anything to protect those walls. And some of us have brought titans. But the awakening itself is bigger than this. It is driven by forces of causality that even those at the top of our social order are powerless to stop. And those walls like that of Maria, are coming down one way or another. This is a time of transition. To aid in that transition our revolution has 3 goals:
      1. Spread Dickriding across the web and world, Dickriding being defined to us as "Being self indulgent with your favorite things. Letting anyone and anyone know how great it is and NEVER being ashamed about it or talking about it!"
      2. We want at least 20 youtube channels carrying the "Dickriding Association" brand. No trademark or copyright bullshit here, Spread the name far and wide my fellow Riders!
      3. We'll(associations) support one another in every concivable way (Financially, socially, publicly, privatly, etc.) even if you personally dislike what another group is Dickriding. This is a movement of brotherhood and solidarity!
You only leave this world with the effect you had on others. Lets make that effect a positive one and remind people that Life is Epic!

I think this was very well done but as you said this is very much comparing apples to oranges. The scale of each tournament arc is just too different. Naruto's arc escalates the story where Mha's arc establishes a character. I kind of wish the comparison took that into account and compared how well each tournament worked in each story instead of the one to one comparison.

    • @ElfosDeMordor

Legolas_pt hmm maybe you should try different fruits since these aren't to YOUR standards. Mangoes are pretty nice. As for oranges well yeah there are a lot of them but that's cause they're are a lot of different types. Like there's this one called Cara Cara oranges that I find just delightful. From the color to the taste these oranges appeal to ME. You know now that I think about it I don't like bananas. They're just down right awful. Though I suppose it would be pretty weird and annoying of me to go around telling people that bananas just suck cause I happen to not like them when they're talking about them it probably also wouldn't contribute anything to the discussion they were having. Now look at me I've started rambling. Anyway hope you find a fruit you like.

The goal of the two series is VERY different.
The chunin exam was a big setup for an invasion that continued the tournament stealthily and shifted the series from just ninjas in school to ninjas in war.
My hero Academia's tournament Arc was designed to to flesh out and develop all the characters in an organic way by pitting them against each other.
I like my hero Academia's tournament Arc better for how concisely it runs. Even the squash matches contain development for both sides, or at least one side in some cases.
The squash matches also illustrate how certain power matchups can be risky for one-sided best. Characters walk away with the realization that they do have vulnerabilities they need to shore up, and the effects of those squash matches come up later.
You do, however, remind me that the early Naruto was really good. It's only after the time skip that Naruto started to fall.
So I stand by liking tournament arc in my hero Academia better, but will acknowledge that Naruto's was good too.

One thing I did kinda enjoy was that technically the match ups in the Chunin exams did take place in a way. As we know Naruto, Temari and Shino won their fights while Sasuke and Gaara's match was interrupted. Technically Gaara wins the fight during his and Sasukes continued fight outside the proper tournament. So technically the Semi Finals would've been Naruto vs Gaara which Naruto wins and Temari vs Shino. However Shino and Kankoru have a proper match instead of Kankoru forfeiting which Shino still wins but is unable to continue due to the poison he took. Meaning he'd have to basically forfeit his match to Temari. So the only thing that didn't technically happened was the Final which would've been Naruto vs Temari. Though considering Naruto beat her terrifying brother I wouldn't be surprised if she forfeited as well. Meaning Naruto technically won.

I think the structure and simplicity of the sports festival was intended
As it is stated by All Might and a majoryity of the adults, it is nothing more than a showcase for the students to show their future prospective hero companies.
Now whether or not that is bad is based on your own personal opinion, but I find it to work because of it. If it decided to be as complicated and intricate as the chuunin exam I think it would've been more bogged down and taken away the emotion from both the wins and the losses of the students.

I quite liked the Sports Festival for its take on the tournament arc. The brisk pacing is refreshing, and the ideas it attempts to develop work much better through that pacing (as I said in the video, the battles are quick and intense to reflect how the characters are supposed to give it their all and reach for the top).

If even that. HeroAca made UA feel like an actual high school where superpowered people are developed into potential heroes and sidekicks.

This is why I love early Naruto. So much thought was put into the writing. Naruto was a slow steady decrease in quality as it went on, as Kishimoto admitted being a weekly mangaka took a physical and mental toll on him over the years.
Still, even with the shoddy finale and awful power scaling in the final arc, the ending was a nice homage to Devilman and how it's an optimistic reimagining of that series' ending. Not gonna spoil, but they fit thematically with each other so much.

    • @runbaa9285

Naruto and Sasuke went from elite-level combatants to country busters in a matter of days, which is how long the war took place. No matter how you put it, that's just an awful power scaling, with the power ceiling being raised over and over again over the course of a single arc.

Naruto at the end took too big of a leap and even worse gave the Battle debate fanboys leverage to say Naruto and Sasuke could solo something like bleach or one piece that previously had characters who were above them tier wise.

So in a nutshell of the two tournament arcs:
Naruto: goes all out to make the lesser-seen side characters more interesting and have potential character development, but does not capitalise on this later on.
MHA: does the bare minimum on what a tournament arc should do, but does a similar thing with its characters (who we already saw before)which were given character development that was later capitalised in the same season.

Personally, i liked the chunin exams much more than the sports tournament arc. While i have to admit that i had to keep skipping repeated flashbacks in naruto and felt like that arc went for too long, at least you get to know the characters and get to see much more interesting dynamics, fights and interactions. In bnha instead you just see extremely short fights where you learn absolutely nothing about the characters other than todoroki and a bit of deku. Considering how horikoshi has still barely developed most background characters (just look at class 1B or most of the girls in 1A...) even in the latest chapters of the manga... I think that he could have done a much better job with the sports tournament arc and could have used it to let us know a bit more about these characters i mentioned. I don't know, it was just disappointing to me.

Naruto's fight with Neji was good though, he fought a very strong peer and managed to win through deception and preying on Neji's overconfidence. Getting beaten by Naruto is the best thing that happened to Neji (and Gaara as well) as it forced them to reevaluate their worldviews. As for Naruto, he was routinely dismissed and everyone expected him to lose, but he proved them wrong and what his character got out of it was the recognition that he had so long desired. It is the first time he is praised on mass for his upset victory over the prodigy of the Hyuga clan(the most prominent clan in the village aside from the Uchiha).

    • @MathWizHQ
      @MathWizHQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I really wish that Hinata's defeat had played a bigger role, though. Naruto encouraged her to give it her all, and she nearly died because of it. This could've given Naruto some doubts about his goal/mentality and provided Neji with an opportunity to play a few mind games. Considering how effectively he was able to "read minds" during his fight with Hinata, it would've been cool if that was part of his character - that he could read people's body language and dig into their mental insecurities through that (on top of his prior knowledge of Naruto's influence on Hinata). This would've taken Neji's overconfidence up a notch, thus adding some extra weight to Naruto's victory as he would also have to overcome his own internal conflict.
Beyond that, the fight could have played out similarly to how it actually did, with Naruto re-affirming his beliefs and forcing Neji to change his own. As it stands now, though, the fight didn't have the same amount of depth as I think it should have had, and that mostly comes down to Neji taking a back seat up until the preliminaries.

Neji was NOT right. Neji's view that people could not change and could not overcome the difference in their talent or lack of it... is proven decidedly wrong. Neji's view on fate is warped and he is shown to hypocritical by Naruto in that he is fighting his own fate in the Hyuga clan harder than anyone while condemning others for their trying to change for the better (Lee, Hinata and Naruto). People constantly point to Naruto's connection with the sage of six paths as demeaning this and showing becoming great warrior and the hokage was always his destiny, no... Naruto still worked for it, he did have the ninetails power to tap into, but he still very much worked for it in spite of his horrendous lack of skills and talent early on. The whole reincarnation thing was not thought up until well into the series, it was put in there by Kishimoto as a way of tying in Naruto and Sasuke against Kaguya in the end.

I think the problems with MHAs tournament are also partially due to the quirk system. With exceptions, the students are very limited in what they can do, the cavalry battle uses the powers for all their worth, but you could not see most of them using their powers to find a way too cheat in a exam. Even basic techniques like transformation, clone and the inclusion of weapons, traps and advanced martial arts give the ninja much more to work with, in scenarios like the Forest of Death.

I find I don't really agree with the weaknesses you put forth for BNHA's tournament arc. Criticizing a lack of development on side characters seems disingenuous given the runtime, especially compared to the Chuunin Exams.
BNHA's tournament arc does a lot, and more characters are impacted than just the big three. Ochako gets arguably more character development then she got in the entire first season. The point of the arc isn't to develop the side characters, it's to increase our investment in the main cast and to understand them better. It's arguably a better use of screen time by an order of magnitude. Unimportant bits (like battles between irrelevant side characters) are cut out in favor of covering only that which really delivers value to the overall story. Don't get me wrong, development of side characters and world building can both be incredibly enjoyable to watch, but I don't think a tournament arc is the right place to do that. (the internships episode and the final exams serve this purpose much more efficiently) A tournament generally focuses on 1 on 1 combat between characters in a single setting, so there isn't much opportunity for world building. I also think that long, drawn-out fights between side characters (especially ones that won't get any more serious screentime) is a disservice to the viewer. (full disclosure: I don't watch anime that have >100 episodes)
In my eyes, filler, especially when used to the point of absurdity, is one of the greatest sins of shounen anime. And, to my knowledge, all big shounen anime have engaged in massive amounts filler EXCEPT My Hero Academia (which is only 2 seasons in, so this could change). Everything in MHA happens with purpose, delivering value to the viewer and moving the story along. This is an incredible strength of the show. I think a lot of people give filler a pass, but I find it intolerable. If I'm watching 3 episodes to get the content and enjoyment which another show can deliver in a single episode, then that's simply a waste of time.

THE BLACK RAIKAGE - if you mean that BNHA isn't airing continuously, yeah that's a sacrifice we're making so it doesn't catch up to the source material too quickly. Honestly, I think it's preferable over a 3-year hiatus like what Attack on Titan did or creating a bunch of anime-original filler content. I'm totally happy to wait half a year between seasons if it means every minute meaningfully develops the plot and the world. The wait time between seasons has absolutely no impact on the value of the show as a whole, but a ton of filler does.

There's also the worldbuilding aspect to tournament arcs since whatever rules the tournament has says a lot about the society that holds the tournament and the themes of the story. Like how the Hunter and Chunin Exams are...well exams to determine if the candidates are worthy of the position they're fighting for. And then there's Dragon Ball's World Martial Arts Tournament which doesn't allow weapons, armor, or outside help because it's about martial artists testing their own strength against each other which is a core idea of the series.

Boy, Naruto was so good back then. That said, I think the Chuunin Exams showcase some characterists of what would become some of it's weakness. You mention the size of the cast, which was never developed. I also think Naruto, even the manga, stretches some parts too much. Pacing-wise, I prefer Sports Festival way more.
I also disagree it's "hollow", even in comparison with Chuunin Exams. For example, I can't say anything in the Chuunin Exam is as deep as Todoroki's story and his ideologic battle with Midoriya. Rock Lee and Gaara are the only thing that come close, but then the characters are basically forgotten, so yeah.
And I don't think the stakes not being that high is a big problem. In the end, it's about showcasing its power, which everyone fails: Bakugou gets a hollow victory - he himself says it; Todoroki loses the ideologic battle (which ends up being best for him); and Midoriya isn't able to show the world that "I Am Here". If you count with Uraraka and Iida, they all had big defeats too, and they all affect each character. Naruto's chuunin arc, arguibly, didn't affect the protagonist at all.
Also, you cheated by including the Orochimaru attack in the same arc.

    • @flu3b93
      @flu3b93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Yeah, Rock Lee story was great, but what came out of it? In the end, he was proven wrong in-universe: only special people (namely Sasuke and Naruto) were strong, unfortunately. One reason more I say classic Naruto was great while Shippuden wasn't. I don't remember Neiji's story that much, it didn't make a mark on me.
I don't understand what you meant about the effect of the chuunin arc. If we consider Mathwiz's division of the arc, I guess you can say the war led to Sasuke leaving Konoha... But then wouldn't be fair to include Stain's arc on MHA? I mean, it gave closure to Todoroki's character and only because of Midoriya's intervention, he was there to help them (he accepted his father as a boss) and were able to actually not die (by using his fire side and barely stopping Stain).
The music on Naruto was great, but so is in MHA. I don't think it's unfair to say you like one or another. Opinions may vary.
Sorry, but I disagree completely on the fights. Sure, the fights on MHA were short, but I think of that as a strength. It's also a bit unfair to Naruto: MHA has a better schedule to make better animation on fights. Naruto was released weekly and it shows. And thinking of animation only, does anything in Naruto ever came close to Todoroki x Midoriya's final attack? I don't think so.
But don't think I hate Naruto, or that I'm one of those MHA fans that gets salty when the comparison is made. I love Naruto despite its flaws (that are way more evident because it's a finished show and it was stretched until they couldn't do it anymore).

THE BLACK RAIKAGE That's extremely biased and only your opinion though. Music is subjective Fight choreography was good in both why else have we rarely heard anyone whine and call it bad moments in either. Todorokis story wasn't shallow and the seeds of it were planted in season one his costume even signified this. Midoriya has a noble goal uraraka has a noble goal and insane willpower. There was nothing shallow about either of their desires either. Do you prefer the entire cast to have sad backstories though? Is that what you prefer?

I actually really appreciated the quickness of many of the MHA fights in the tournament arc for the sheer fact that most fights aren't drawn out. Seriously, going at it for more than a couple minutes straight takes some serious energy. It just isn't realistic that every fight would last long enough for character development. As a former athlete, it made me appreciate that tournament arc even more.
It also re-establishes an important aspect of quirks that was briefly touched on in the second episode of the series - that there are match-ups that are naturally bad. Tokoyami was specifically a terrible match-up for Yaoyorozu because she needed time to use her quirk and he can attack especially quickly. He in turn lost to Bakugo because his quirk's seemingly only true weakness is light, which Bakugo produces with his explosions. This ties into why a bunch of pro heroes just contained a rampaging sludge villain suffocating a child instead of actually rescuing said child - they were powerless to do anything more. And, of course, things like Yaoyorozu's disappointing loss and Tokoyami's weakness to light are important seeds planted in this arc to come back later.

  • @fandomonium3789

One major thing I noticed is that Bakugo vs Uraraka is just like Neji vs Hinata. Both fights are between the smug elitist who is the prodigy ahead of everyone else, up against the undeniably much weaker female love interest who doesn't put up a whole lot of a fight, but is more there to showcase a determination to not give up. However, the key difference is that when Hinata is barely standing, Neji goes for the kill. When Bakugo is going for the kill and realizes Uraraka is already falling over, he stops attacking. This is the primary difference between Neji and Bakugo. Neji is a villain (minor though he may be) while Bakugo is just determined. Bakugo wanted to win, and wasn't afraid to go all-out for victory. But not at the extreme of purposefully trying to cause lasting damage. That maybe due again to the difference in tone, as the Chunin Exams are a death match while the UA Sports Festival is a broadcasted event, but I think this shows a major difference in Bakugou's values and morality. He's an arrogant prick, but one who still has a sense of morals and beliefs that keep in line with a hero's mindset. And frankly, I find Bakugo's character far more interesting as a result of this distinction in character.

Some interesting parallels there and a decent video overall but you lack perspective on a number of things about this comparison, a few of whichMatortheeternal pointed out. And since you yourself say that this is like apples to oranges even though they're both tournament arcs - the fundamental question rears itself - why compare them at all? Unless you had some grander, broad idea that you wanted to communicate through this video that I missed or forgot, comparing two plots with very different goals and approaches is strange and it left something to be desired in terms of taking everything into consideration, as I mentioned at the beginning.
