Feeling sad means you're human--that's a good thing. Twelve miles of dead trees is sad. You're just emoting that some days make you feel different things. You're doing great!

Ha! Yeah curiosity has gotten the better of me to consult WebMD twice in the last ten years…I’m proud to say that I am still alive contrary to what I read there all these years later!

Section K in Washington has a ton of blowdowns. Aches, pains, and injuries go hand-in-hand with high mileage days.

Yep. The Dixie Fire was huge....2 years ago....just under 1 million acres

Just how a hiker can enter and traverse the devastation of a burn area without feeling grief from such a huge loss is beyond me. 😭 And there are more ahead, some with significant blow downs. But great beauty also lies ahead, Many miles of beauty and the joy of being a free spirit on the trail. 😊

It is sad, when you realize how much acreage has burned, not to mention the wildlife that was killed. Not to mention how much could burn this year. BTW I like that you appreciate my state!

Sit, cross one leg over the other and pull top knee into chest and hold, repeat with other leg on top, I would have big toe numbness and this really helped

Nice views today. Hope the knees continue to improve. Lateral foot pain in new shoes, if only in new shoes, is probably simply that. Hope the shoes break in and feel better quickly. But with the miles you've done-sprain/strain/neuroma/tendinitis are also a natural result. Fingers crossed that none of this worsens to any degree.

    1) New shoes could be tight - needs to stretch out; 2) Burning sensation comes with nerve issues. Possible slight impingement of L4-5 ? Continue your stretches.

Hello, fellow "Pa. Wilds" hiker. For your toe problem, you may want to try a larger size shoe. You can also trim your your insoles where your toes are. I, like some people, have a slightly longer foot than the other. I sometimes shuffle my feet when I hike and I have stubbed my toe numerous times on my longer foot where my toe nail turned black then fell off. Having a larger size boot size will also keep your toes from getting cramped and resulting in "tailor blisters".

For sleep, I drink sleepy time tea with valerian root
Have you thought about adding Turmeric with ginger to your diet? I bought some turmeric gummies at Costco today. I’m not sure if the stores in the small towns have it. There’s a lot of health benefits like gut health, helps with bloating, inflammation and helps flush toxins.

Toe thing sounds similar to when I had metatarsalgia, they make little round pads you can position in your shoe to cushion the metatarsal heads, worth a shot to try.

The Dixie fire in 2021 burned just over 960,000 acres. It was very sad as I went thru that area just about a month before and then went thru the next year

Glad you had some good days of hiking, betting back to more of what you were hoping for. I keep thinking about how excited you were about the Sierra’s getting into those and out of the desert. I feel it being so mentally tough with the snow made that transition from excitement to dread so much worse too. But you two are killing it out there, doing ~25mi days like they are nothing. Love the views!!

New insoles can create new pressure points that you had previously worn down in the old inserts. Maybe that's the reason your toes feel the way they do. Then it gets better as you bed them in again. Or it's an alien fungus. Despite what you read, however, those usually don't kill you in a week. It takes about two to three.

Definitely sucks about the burned forest but I guess it will rejuvenate better over the long run. You definitely got beat up by all the blow downs but glad you power through! Saw this sign thing when scrolling threw TikTok it says caution Big Foot hiking in area made me think of Big Foot hiking with you lol

Your video/image quality (and videography skills) are very good. Based on what you’ve been saying about your screen protector it sounds like you’re relying on your phone for all things video. Is that correct? If so, what model? Would really love to not have to carry a dedicated camera to document some of my longer hikes. Regardless, thanks for sharing your journey. You do a great job showing the physical and mental side out of it without being overly dramatic !!
PS… my Topo mountain racer 3’s also make the bottom of my toes a bit hot. I’ve wondered if there is too much padding and/or too much room in the toe box, both of which allow the toes to move just a bit in ways they didn’t when I used to use altra lone peaks. I’ve only put about 80 miles on them tho. Hope to hear an update that your toes have got used to them.

Big toes connected to the little toe...all joking aside. You are probably compensating for your big toe by pushing off with the other toes. Since your shoes aren't designed to flex in that way, you are getting hot spots.

  • @terryweaver9770

I don’t know nothin’ about nothin’!! Your 3 little toes. Are they over stressed b/c you are walking different in your step compensating for the big toe that is messed up? The 3 little toes are over working in a way they aren’t supposed to?

Doing great, brother. Your foot issue could be that old injury. Could be because of the weight you have lost has created some friction room. That's hard to say without seeing the foot.
