Conspiracy Theory: Matt asked Brennan to run a mini-series telling the epic saga of the Calamity, the legendary downfall of ages past, so that he could spend a few extra weeks fine-tuning Taste of Tal'Dorei.
@@Sp4rt4nSl4ya I was worried about Calamity as well, as someone who was apprehensive about anyone else other than Matt touching Calamity lore, let me say, it was amazing. Brennan clearly cares deeply about Exandrian lore and history and it's obvious he's watched the show. He was very respectful about maintaining the integrity of the timeline and historical events and clearly got a deep lore dive from Matt before he started then used that to create something very in tune with Matt's world building. Also I agree, Artistically less is more for something like the Calamity, and while we do learn a decent amount, Most of everything hinted at in the campaigns is still unknown/ vague. Calamity just covers the initial events in a day or so, whereas the Calamity itself is at least a hundred years long.
@@Sp4rt4nSl4yait's probably the best CR content produced, and might be the most entertaining D&D game as a viewer on the internet. It also really doesn't "answer" a lot about the Calamity (like it would if it did take place in Aeor or an established city), I personally came out of it with more questions than resolutions.
So true. I already think of Laudna and Imogen's relationship as "a young woman traveling with her cool aunt," so this fits perfectly into the "drunk aunt getting into her feelings" niche.
I didn't realize how much I missed this campaign and Matt and his children. That they throw the Babys is actually an uran myth, they just losen their pouch and let the baby drop out, so the predetator will eat the the offspring instead of the mother. Which makes, from a strictly evolutionary standpoint, a lot of sense, since the mother has already proven to be able to reproduce and is able to survive alone. I think Brennen would be quite factual with things like that, since he seems to take his animal facts very seriously.
Both Pike and Yasha left a bit to be desired, mostly because Ashley was gone for half of their respective campaigns. I'm glad that she can finally flex her RP muscles to the fullest.
When Launda said "I broke her rock" to Ashton. I was taken back to when we met Cryus. "Oh I had a lucky rock before, cool" And Dorian said " it was a pet rock and you let it die somehow" God if Dorian was there when they were having this talk 🤣.
And right away, Taliesin becomes my favorite customer. As a restaurant worker, a customer who goes along with the madness, but is to-the-point immediately gets the best service, because they UNDERSTAND.
Many people believed Taliesin had worked in the kitchen, or at least knew people who did, based on the way he played his character in Elderscroll one-shot. Or perhaps Taliesin knew the etiquette of this because he was said to be king of ren-faire.

For me it was the fact that he seemingly had no idea about "Mike Hunt" being a known gag. Like, everyone's face changed as soon as he said it the first time, and based on his face he was clearly taken by surprise.
Definitely gonna have to steal this shtick from him and use it in a canpaign of my own. Ive done a lore dump using a proper theatre show, but a goofy themed restaurant with cheesy acting done by performers who are clearly over it is just so much nore funny.

I really hope the next campaign has a character who grew up in bassuras and their whole motivation for adventuring is because they're obsessed with all the stories and action and experiences they saw, dragging their parents to Taste of Tal'Dorei every single night for dinner.
I love that Matt saw a picture of a Quokka and was like, well that's too cute, I guess these guards are just going to want a new friend now, Simultaneously rewarding Ashley by letting her into the compound and coming up with challenges for Ashley based on how cute she was and how inconvenient it was that everybody wanted to keep her as a pet. Such lovely "yes and" work.
@@bmalloy0 That's the thing that I feel is the most important thing about D&D. A lot of actual plays stress improv and that's all fine and good. However yes but really exemplifies that it's a game. You don't just get things and there is effort that has to be put in whether it's a roll and the use of your PCs skills or perhaps more. There is also the fact that for every player at the table (DM inclusive) there must be some yes anding such that each person gets served.

And Fearne keeps getting stuck under doors, if that's not getting messed with I don't know what is lol. Fearne will get caught out a million times by the time C3 is over, I wouldn't worry!
Honestly I spent a whole story arc for a pathfinder game doing that, had connections EVERYWHERE. probably helped I had essentially built fey John Constantine.

He argued that his friends didn't care about him and never bother to learn anything about him, not even his mother's name. Exact words were "You’ve never risked anything, you don’t know me, you don’t know anything about me. What’s my mother’s name? What’s her name? Easy question. Died in front of me. Killed by a goblin. Biggest part of my life. What’s her name?" The group made it up after but Scanlan left for a few episodes (in-world for more than a year) to spend time with his daughter while Sam played with another character

I hoped the the creepy whisper was only towards Orym. Only for him to ask the others if they had the same, and they all say no. Later, we find out that there are hidden threats in those whispers because Delilah knows that he connected, even loosely, to Keyleth (spelling?).

Although tourists like quokkas many locals that must live with them do not. Quokkas are bold and will enter buildings such as homes and restaurants. So Fearne is 100% on brand here.

@@Karak971 Posting even later than you did, but wanted to correct some misonformation here. Sam didn't randomly decide to dress that way, though it would be in character for him. Check out C1 episode 30. The episodes don't match up perfectly because of live shows and such.
Being deep into C2, and seeing Liam RPing Orym with such pure childhood joy on his face, it just warms my heart. As much as I like Caleb, the contrast makes me realize how tough it must have been to turn every week into ball of gloom and misery. Overall it strikes me much all of the cast enjoys the change of pace their new character bring - Travis and Ashley being agents of chaos, Taliesin after Cad being able to be asshole again, Laura enjoying being mich more subdue and focused character, etc. This alone makes C3 worth a lot already

Chetney is cursed, Laudna got killed, FCG got killed, Fearn is a maniac, Imogin has nightmares, Orim lost his SO and Ashton almost dies. All in all there is a lot of trauma that has to be washed away by soziolizing and alcohol.

I love how the subtitles at 1:57:47 actually say "That's a (w)hole conversation." Great work in general, thank you very much to the people who write 4 hours worth of subtitles every single week.
English is not my first language, and I'm sooo grateful to whoever does the subtitles! They catch so many great little jokes and moments that I would otherwise not understand. Especially when the cast whispers or everyone talks at the same time.
My Favorite bit of Critrole improv that has stuck as a running gag are the whispers and echoes of Laudna's message spell. Which shoud be renamed "Whisper" really.

Because it's a joke they keep doing. ha ha laudna scary ha ha her message is scary. Additionally it was pretty clearly them doing the voices from the start, as they were laughing while doing it.
The "We know when she has a connection because her eyes cross" and the subsequent reaction from Laura really killed me. Imagining Imogen delivering those very intense messages with no hair and eyes crossed was almost too funny an experience

I was immediately looking for Nordiverse stuff as soon as I saw he wasn't in his seat. Both relieved and terrified when I didn't see it, because, in my personal opinion, the Quip stuff is much worse, in terms of secondhand mortification.
I really like Orym talking about Laudna (1:45:55). Above the joking across the table, Orym has heard about the horrors of Whitestone and what Laudna went through from listening in on conversations from VM and from Laudna herself. Orym is the reasonable guy of Bells Hells but I like the way Liam plays through continuity, it makes sense he would have Laudna's back and think highly of her.
It's really reaffirming to see the Patron God of DMs also having a complete brain melt at the start of his sessions. Helps with my self esteem IMMENSELY

Sameeeee. Beau was really well acted and well-written, so I always appreciated Marisha's thoughtful approach to character play. However, Beau was just so frustrating that sometimes it was hard to just enjoy watching Marisha tear it up onscreen. But with Laudna, I'm excited whenever she does _anything!_ And I'm so glad to see her finally getting into her element, with a character that's so fun and likeable that you can't help but smile. Marisha is an amazing, wonderful person, but she's gotten so much hate and bullshit for her whole time on the team. It's about goddamn time she got some appreciation. 🙂
I have no idea what you people see in Laudna. She went on my nerves from the day one. She talks like she is perpetually intrigued and her dead shtick gets boring really fast. And she sounds like she isn't intelligent much so it's exhausting to see Marisha play the character.

I didn’t previously know Grant Imahara was friends with Matt and Marisha, but she was visibly affected by the named reference so I googled it. Such a sweet immortalization. I hope she was pleased. ❤️
The whole cast (and basically the whole LA TTRPG-community) were friends of Grant and his widow was the costume designer for CR on multiple occasions. Also when Matt engaged Marisha it was Grant who designed the escape room for them, where the engagement happened.

I felt Matt on Mike Hunt. As a DM, I have a persistent world that I've been developing but until recently, the underdark has been pretty bare bones. Pretty much treated as a wasteland that can be entered through the dwarven kingdoms. It's more "Steriotypical" right now because I just haven't developed too much beyond some major key parts. Anyway, I was recently naming a bunch of different smaller forts, or Thaigs as I stole from Dragon age, that were dropped around. Typically, depending on which of the 3 kingdom capitals the dwarves come from, they have things like Kul, Tov, Iz, or for the sake of this story, AZ before their name. So it would be like Kul'Tivok, or or Tov'Drosko. And I named something like, 32 different locations, practically rapidfire, without deeper consideration. Until I brought it up to one player who was looking to build a character and then he pointed out one that felt like it should have been obvious..... Az-Krakus
Campaign 4 - Marisha starts the campaign married to another one of the PCs or skips that and goes straight into "we're exes" with one of the PCs. Bonus points if it's Travis.
The bells hells just genuinely having a good old time at this shotty theme restaurant is probably one my favorite moments from this campaign so far. Its so wholesome 🥺
I enjoy how Talisen holds onto his characters knowledge and lore, makes everyone wanting him to spill the beans It's like the party becomes that person that asks a million questions while watching a movie, if they'd just give it a min they will find out
I feel like Taliesin is probably the member of the cast (outside of Matt of course) with the deepest Exandrian knowledge. He's such a lore nerd on a bunch of subjects, he probably remembers the most stuff from their past sessions.

My understanding is that 1:Quokka are marsupials, and most marsupials will drop their children from their pouch in high stress situations and 2. Quokka live on an island without natural predators, so it's quite rare that they'd actually do that in the wild.

Conspiracy Theory: Matt asked Brennan to run a mini-series telling the epic saga of the Calamity, the legendary downfall of ages past, so that he could spend a few extra weeks fine-tuning Taste of Tal'Dorei.
Solid theory, how was that btw? I avoided it because I enjoy not knowing much about the calamity beyond what we learned from C2

@@Sp4rt4nSl4ya I was worried about Calamity as well, as someone who was apprehensive about anyone else other than Matt touching Calamity lore, let me say, it was amazing. Brennan clearly cares deeply about Exandrian lore and history and it's obvious he's watched the show. He was very respectful about maintaining the integrity of the timeline and historical events and clearly got a deep lore dive from Matt before he started then used that to create something very in tune with Matt's world building.
Also I agree, Artistically less is more for something like the Calamity, and while we do learn a decent amount, Most of everything hinted at in the campaigns is still unknown/ vague. Calamity just covers the initial events in a day or so, whereas the Calamity itself is at least a hundred years long.

It also really doesn't "answer" a lot about the Calamity (like it would if it did take place in Aeor or an established city), I personally came out of it with more questions than resolutions.

That they throw the Babys is actually an uran myth, they just losen their pouch and let the baby drop out, so the predetator will eat the the offspring instead of the mother. Which makes, from a strictly evolutionary standpoint, a lot of sense, since the mother has already proven to be able to reproduce and is able to survive alone.
I think Brennen would be quite factual with things like that, since he seems to take his animal facts very seriously.

And right away, Taliesin becomes my favorite customer. As a restaurant worker, a customer who goes along with the madness, but is to-the-point immediately gets the best service, because they UNDERSTAND.
Many people believed Taliesin had worked in the kitchen, or at least knew people who did, based on the way he played his character in Elderscroll one-shot. Or perhaps Taliesin knew the etiquette of this because he was said to be king of ren-faire.

@@bmalloy0 That's the thing that I feel is the most important thing about D&D. A lot of actual plays stress improv and that's all fine and good.
However yes but really exemplifies that it's a game. You don't just get things and there is effort that has to be put in whether it's a roll and the use of your PCs skills or perhaps more.
There is also the fact that for every player at the table (DM inclusive) there must be some yes anding such that each person gets served.

There's a few more things that led to that incident, but basically Scanlan had a BIG confrontation with the rest of Vox Machina in episode 85. He argued that his friends didn't care about him and never bother to learn anything about him, not even his mother's name. Exact words were "You’ve never risked anything, you don’t know me, you don’t know anything about me. What’s my mother’s name? What’s her name? Easy question. Died in front of me. Killed by a goblin. Biggest part of my life. What’s her name?"
The group made it up after but Scanlan left for a few episodes (in-world for more than a year) to spend time with his daughter while Sam played with another character

@@Karak971 Posting even later than you did, but wanted to correct some misonformation here. Sam didn't randomly decide to dress that way, though it would be in character for him. Check out C1 episode 30. The episodes don't match up perfectly because of live shows and such.
Being deep into C2, and seeing Liam RPing Orym with such pure childhood joy on his face, it just warms my heart. As much as I like Caleb, the contrast makes me realize how tough it must have been to turn every week into ball of gloom and misery.
Overall it strikes me much all of the cast enjoys the change of pace their new character bring - Travis and Ashley being agents of chaos, Taliesin after Cad being able to be asshole again, Laura enjoying being mich more subdue and focused character, etc. This alone makes C3 worth a lot already
I completely agree with watching Liam! I also started C2 and seeing the contrast just speaks to his incredible acting skills

Came here just to say this. The attention to detail to the subs is out of this world and so appreciated.
English is not my first language, and I'm sooo grateful to whoever does the subtitles! They catch so many great little jokes and moments that I would otherwise not understand. Especially when the cast whispers or everyone talks at the same time.
My Favorite bit of Critrole improv that has stuck as a running gag are the whispers and echoes of Laudna's message spell. Which shoud be renamed "Whisper" really.
Is this a gag though? It feels super intentional, at first i didnt know id the group was doing it, or it was some kind of distortion FX

It is a gag. Because it's a joke they keep doing. ha ha laudna scary ha ha her message is scary. Additionally it was pretty clearly them doing the voices from the start, as they were laughing while doing it.
The "We know when she has a connection because her eyes cross" and the subsequent reaction from Laura really killed me. Imagining Imogen delivering those very intense messages with no hair and eyes crossed was almost too funny an experience

I really like Orym talking about Laudna (1:45:55). Above the joking across the table, Orym has heard about the horrors of Whitestone and what Laudna went through from listening in on conversations from VM and from Laudna herself. Orym is the reasonable guy of Bells Hells but I like the way Liam plays through continuity, it makes sense he would have Laudna's back and think highly of her.
I love how in every campaign there is always some bond between Laura and Liam's characters. Love it.

I've enjoyed Marisha's characters in previous campaigns but Laudna is EVERYTHING to me. I would die for her.
Sameeeee. Beau was really well acted and well-written, so I always appreciated Marisha's thoughtful approach to character play. However, Beau was just so frustrating that sometimes it was hard to just enjoy watching Marisha tear it up onscreen. But with Laudna, I'm excited whenever she does _anything!_ And I'm so glad to see her finally getting into her element, with a character that's so fun and likeable that you can't help but smile. Marisha is an amazing, wonderful person, but she's gotten so much hate and bullshit for her whole time on the team. It's about goddamn time she got some appreciation. 🙂

I have no idea what you people see in Laudna. She went on my nerves from the day one. She talks like she is perpetually intrigued and her dead shtick gets boring really fast.
And she sounds like she isn't intelligent much so it's exhausting to see Marisha play the character.

Laudna is kinda cool, but that`s about it. Backstory is more interesting than the character. And that is not a problem for me.

I didn’t previously know Grant Imahara was friends with Matt and Marisha, but she was visibly affected by the named reference so I googled it. Such a sweet immortalization. I hope she was pleased. ❤️
The whole cast (and basically the whole LA TTRPG-community) were friends of Grant and his widow was the costume designer for CR on multiple occasions.
Also when Matt engaged Marisha it was Grant who designed the escape room for them, where the engagement happened.

As a DM, I have a persistent world that I've been developing but until recently, the underdark has been pretty bare bones. Pretty much treated as a wasteland that can be entered through the dwarven kingdoms. It's more "Steriotypical" right now because I just haven't developed too much beyond some major key parts.
Anyway, I was recently naming a bunch of different smaller forts, or Thaigs as I stole from Dragon age, that were dropped around. Typically, depending on which of the 3 kingdom capitals the dwarves come from, they have things like Kul, Tov, Iz, or for the sake of this story, AZ before their name. So it would be like Kul'Tivok, or or Tov'Drosko.
And I named something like, 32 different locations, practically rapidfire, without deeper consideration.
Until I brought it up to one player who was looking to build a character and then he pointed out one that felt like it should have been obvious.....

I feel like Taliesin is probably the member of the cast (outside of Matt of course) with the deepest Exandrian knowledge. He's such a lore nerd on a bunch of subjects, he probably remembers the most stuff from their past sessions.

@@EstevanZepeda At the very least we know he wrote extensive Whitestone Lore beyond what we saw through Percy so I wouldn't be shocked if in the future he contributes more in other areas if he hasn't already. Though Whitestone was also his special goth baby with Matt a little bit lol.
