That was a great interview and really interesting how Ali's POV is as a Indian/Pakistani person in Japan, I can feel his frustration as I grew up with a lot of Indian/Pakistani friends and heard similar jokes or worse growing up as a kid. Fun fact I'm here In Vancouver B.C Canada and Ali would fit in with out 125,000+ Indian and Pakistani community.
Very interesting! I'm from Algeria been living in Quebec Canada for 22years. My kids were born here, and I feel like, even though people have been very welcoming, Quebecers being very protective of their culture and specific french canadian identity, they tend to make you feel different. My kids feel that no matter how much ingraind in Quebec culture they are, they will never be considered Quebeccers, because mainly how they look and how their names sound. I lived a couple of years in the US and never felt or made feel that I was a "foreigner". I lived here 2 decades and still people ask me where I'm from. But still I agree with the part when you say the you still want Japan to stay the same, I do want to see QC keep it's culture and stay the same, because that's what makes me like it that much...

i too have indian, pakistani, sri lankan, bangladesh kids in my class. majority are pure and raised here. i always wonder how life is like to them and how their future will be. not all but most can speak japanese flawlessly
It's true, the World mostly has a negative image of Pakistan (especially since Osama Bin Laden was found hiding there), but I did not know about the limitations of travelling with a Pakistani passport. I like that the father chose to settle in Japan because it was safe. What keeps me away is the xenophobia. What attracts me is the peace and quiet, the cleanliness and good manners.
" I do want Japan to catch up on the multiculturism but it will also be sad if Japan changes too much and can't preserve the beautiful culture..." Well said and I hope that for every country honestly, they shouldn't try to be like other countries for anything more than Human Rights (Which they ALL need to step up to). Very curious, do you think that is a serious risk and perhaps part of the reason Japan tries to stay isolated and resists Western changes so much?
He really ought to be able to speak Hindustani (Hindi/Urdu - he’s right that they’re virtually the same). If he understands it then he ought to try activating that knowledge into speech.
Joshua, if Ali introduced himself as half Indian and half Pakistani on stage in England, he'd be describing about half the country! 🙂 I know it is a lot of work to do the translations into English, and we appreciate it so much. Are the translations pretty rigorous or are you concentrating on the gist of the intended meaning?
Somewhere in the middle I guess? But it’s pretty accurate. It’s just that the humor and nuance doesn’t really translate sometimes. So, you might see a normal sentence in English but we’re laughing 😅 but I do try to focus on the gist but also make it not too far off.
