I remember plating the Topflite Magna, Pinnacle Oversized golf balls back in the 90’s. I really enjoyed them and just found some Magda’s here recently and after some years of health issues I found them to help me a bit more in my game. Volvik Golf makes a Magma and Callaway reintroduced the Magna again back some years ago before switching the name to Super Soft Max. I have trouble finding either of the Callaway here in the States. Great video.
This is a re-work of the Callaway Magna ball which was introduced a year or two ago and then vanished...Not sure whether the quality of this ball is superior but, the size is identical...I wondered what happened to the Magna...Thought it was a good option when you play those tracks with impossible rough...The yellow ones were much easier to find than the standard size ball...
Andy maybe you need to flip your ‘initial concern’ of the larger the ball the smaller the hole on its head. Look at it from a different angle in that if you were to conduct a controlled test whereby you had the regular super soft ball v the super soft Max ball in a putt out in the scenario whereby the ball burns the edge of the hole or lips out. Then surely more of the larger balls are going to drop in the hole due to friction and gravity acting on a larger mass and surface area. 🤷♂️🤷♂️just a thought.
@@michaelclements2775 If that saved me 3 or 4 more dropped putts per round I would be so close to par at my course. Definitely need to give em a shot.I already use supersoft the last 4 years.😎
Great review . I've tried these for a few holes . They seem to get up quicker. I've yet to compare to my PROV X . I like the idea of the rough being just a tad shorter with the larger ball.
Just like the Top Flite Magna before it, this Callaway is 3% larger diameter. It sits up higher in the fairway, a LOT higher in the rough, making it a LOT easier to hit/pitch/chip than a normal ball. It has less spin, making it much straighter on full shots. It's surprisingly easier to putt, because the larger size takes less of the break on the green. HOWEVER, a 3% larger diameter creates a 10% larger surface area, which means you will lose almost exactly 10% distance with every club.
@@2Pi100 - Yes. There's no getting around the physics, you'll lose 10% distance on every club. But it's still really fun to play with an oversize ball, I highly recommend trying it.
You say it is 10 percent shorter, but if it surface area is ten percent bigger, then presumably the middle is a 10% bigger target area, so you are likely to hit it better aren't you?
UPDATE: I've been playing this ball for several months and it will improve every part of your game. It's easier to putt because minor imperfections in the green affect it less, it takes less break of the green so every putt is "straighter", and I have found the larger size makes it easier to be more consistent with lag putting. It's easier for chipping and pitching because it sits up higher in the grass, especially the rough. It's easier in the sand because it won't bury as much as a smaller ball. It's easier in the fairway because it sits higher. It's easier for your driver because there's less side spin. The ONLY drawbacks are at the very extremes: You'll have a few more lip outs because it's bigger, and your longest drives won't be as long because it's bigger.
Interesting TH-cam. I watched this TH-cam and I got curios. I pulled out the micrometer and began to measure some golf balls. Here is what I found. Callaway CXB, Callaway Supersoft, Callaway HEX Diablo, Callaway Warbird, Callaway Chrome Soft X, TaylorMade Distance, TaylorMade Tour Response, Topflight XL, Niki, Noodle, Titleist Velocity measured 1.785 inch diameter.
When the Americans came over to play in the open they didn't switch to the 1.62 ball because it was easier to manoeuvre, it was because the smaller ball stayed under the wind better on those windy links courses whereas the bigger ball ballooned up more. That would be my concern playing this larger ball into a strong headwind
Bought a box of these a month or so ago and for once I did feel the difference they did feel really soft off the face and I felt more comfortable putting now that I can see the ball is bigger I’m thinking that was a boost to my confidence in my short game and even hitting my 3 wood and hybrid that I’ve always struggled with I was stringing these balls very well with them.
Great ball when there is little wind . But put it in the bag when above 10pm !!!! Around the green and in the rough it’s awesome !!! It’s my go to ball now !! For last 6 months
Andy I've played both and I don't find any different expect with a fairway wood I seem to get my 3 wood higher in the air with the max which helps me in my older years
If it’s easier or at least not worse on putting then it’s a winner because trying to hit a bigger ball will be easier than a smaller one. Just as using a bigger club head is. Greater surface area means more chance of sweet spot/ball contact. Will get some and try .
I played a couple of rounds with one I found in the rough. I'm a high handicapper, so probably not consistent enough to notice any difference in the way it played. But it was a genuine PITA to get in and out of the ball washer on the back of my golf cart (buggy to those of you on the other side of the pond). Possible, but really tight.
Ive actually got some undersized balls that I use for putting…I’m not sure of the size but if you put it next to a regular sized ball you can easily see the difference..👍🏼👍🏼
Top Flite had the Magna back in the 90's with the same size. This is basically just a new version. It didn't really take off then, I'd expect similar results this time too 🤷♂️
I tried the Seed 01 and it was a little too hard for me but a nice ball. Problem is at $35 a dozen they are not that great of a deal...especially once you factor in the shipping cost. If they were available locally I might try the O5. Too bad.
Me too, left Pro V’s too many times and the 2nd half dozen of the experiment become ‘water hole balls’ or ‘1st tee driver ball’ when I’ve not warmed up.
Why do you like titelist golf balls? We're you fit into a titelist ball? Brand loyalty means jack squat when it comes down to final score. I sense a "fanboy" attitude here 🤣😂

Played the Callaway Magna. Larger ball. I think it's great for the beginner but the niggle was, I should be playing the slightly smaller, normal size ball. I found the larger wasn't going as far with driver.
I tried these for a while my Drives were the same but on the fairway my irons hit sweet more straighter, putting I recommend take the pin out. But it’s an OK ball!
Wilson Staff makes a golf ball called the Zip which is zero compression and plays great..The cost is around $ 29.99 for 24 balls...Great balls for beginners and high handicapers....Preform well off the tee and on the putter...Irons shots work well also...Used them when I started playing then went to a 3 piece ball from Wilson...Breaking News...
I would suspect that the forces that cause a 1.68 size ball to lip out (larger size vs the cup's diameter ) would be reduced on a 1.62 ball. The .06 differential allows the ball to be already in the bottom of the cup. Same thinking regarding the 1.73 ball vs the 1.68 ball.
Great review and insight into the obvious pluses and minuses. You didn't say but I would assume that the max will not have much spin off a wedge and will bounce more on the green. That said the normal Supersoft doesn't spin much either which is obviously great on driver but not so good with a precision shot. Can't beat the price though.
@@TheAverageGolfer Had to pull it out my bag to check, Callaway released the magna(larger size) in 2020ish. I bought a box for my dad, who liked them and found them easier to hit. He's in his 80's

Carl Bunch is right. Larger ball = more surface area = more drag = less distance. Scientific fact and claims to the contrary have already been discounted.
It should spin less, think of it like a tire. How many less revolutions a semi or Lowrey tire spins to go a mile vs the revolutions a car tire spins to go the same mile, its a huge difference in just one size up in a car!!
Tried these awhile ago when they were magna, found them very straight, soft but lost a bit of distance and around the green they didn’t spin they just rolled. I’m pretty decent around the green one of my better parts of my game so i didn’t like them for that reason and a bit too soft for me. Gave them to my mate his old dad tried them absolutely loves em plays the new ones now.
I played these for 3 rounds . With the centre being higher they are easier to hit. But could not make a putt. As soon as I switched back I made 30% more putts
