I bought this at the time.
Between 1973 and 1987 Capital Radio was the most anarchic radio station in the world.Legendary DJ's like Kenny Everett Dave Cash, Roger Scott, Peter Young, Greg Edwards and Nicky Horne. It used to have Soul Country Jazz and Classical shows. Then it all when wrong and Capital became a top 40 station and hasnt changed since. So sad

Yes, sadly real local radio was lost some years ago. In those good old days, there was a real variety of music played over the air. These days you get the same 10 songs if you can call them that, every hour. Capital survived while other stations were culled. Radio Victory was one of those lost. ITV was also streamlined. Carlton now dominates, where as you once had ATV (Midlands), Granada (North West), Southern (South Coast). Such a shame.

Commercial radio was so much better back in the '70s and 80's, especially Capital Radio. Then Thatcher had to change it all, all in the name of freedom of choice, where radio stations had to specialise in specific types of music. So a station that was once all things to everyone, with separate shows from Heavy Metal, Soul (with Greg Edwards, who'd chat all the way through a record!), Reggae (David Roddigan's Roots Rockers), Electro (the late Mike Allen and Allens Army on Manoeuvres), talk in the evening (Anna and the Doctor among others), Classical, Jazz (with Benny Green), Easy Listening on a Sunday morning (Gerald Harper and then Lulu's Solid Gold Sunday) and a general mix of everything with everyone else, Graham Dene's Breakfast Show, Michael Aspel in the Morning Kenny Everett on Saturday afternoons, Roger Scott, Peter Young (PY the Pork Pie), Nicky Horne, John Sachs and Dave Cash, is now playing 'chart' music that's hardly got any diversity to it, it's just the so-called R'n'B, which as no rhythm and certainly no blues either. If I'd grown up in the last 20 years, I very much doubt I'd have the wide ranging musical tastes and knowledge I have now.

It was broadcasting as opposed to the narrow casting that most stations still do. Exceptions? BBC Radio 2 and the 60 plus BBC Local radio stations. The truth is that ILR across the country was struggling to survive, however, Capital was always like a national station because it only needed 10% of listeners to make it viable so it could easily break the rules to be "young" and ostracise most of the older demographic. The other ILRs needed around 30% of the available listeners to make a profit. Beacon tried to emulate Capital, but the IBA told the station it wasn't broadcasting to enough people so it was threatened with closure unless it changed. Deregulation came in and here's what we have.

The Early Capital Radio, brilliant , what memories , certainly gave Radio 1 a run for their money, Radio changed again , the day commercial radio started back in the 70's . Now for the new era of community radio.

I remember one of their motto's... "Capitol Radio - The station that saved you from the BBC". Quite hilarious but true as the BBC was playing a lot of crap.
