We discovered Capital Radio 194 a few years later and loved it! Great DJ's and shows, also the "Flying Eye" traffic reports.Still was able to listen after moving away from London to Sussex in the 90's. After moving still further I'm disappointed to see that "Capital Radio" is now national, swallowed up into a big company like the regional ITV stations were!

As did most ILR stations in the 1979s. The test transmissions were often better. If you want to hear the very best test transmissions of any ILR station then look for Beacon Radio's in March/April 1976. They were pure class.

Fortunately I lived in an area where I could hear the Dutch station Radio Veronica on the same frequency.
    “ Veronica...Veronica”

Unfortunately where I lived, Capital and Veronica were coming from the same direction. Consequently, I could either listen to both stations at once or neither of them.

@@G4KDXlive It was indeed. I used to listen when RNI's reception was not good.

Radio Veronica was a great Dutch pirate station. They moved from 192m down the waveband to 538m until 1974 when they closed down to go onland legally. I believe Capital interfered with them for a year which was unfortunate. Ironically, Capital moved to 194m in 1975, restricting the area it could be listened in.

I listened to Capital in the 00s, I loved the London Sound competition and the Flying Eye. Now Capital is ruined now that it's a national network owned by Global, all it does is play the same 30 or so songs over and over again.

Ironically, that coincided with deregulation. The same IBA regulations that most people cursed and campaignrd vigorously to abolish. The deregulation went too far and resulted in what we have today: myriad stations all chasing a limited amount of advertisers spreading the income too thinly and obligating radio stations to produce safe programming just in case a listener tuned away.

Exactly, it ruined commercial radio, it was never meant to be a few networks like this, even in the 00s in my childhood.

The station left MW / AM in London at the end of September 2023 just a few weeks before the 50th anniversary.... the last record played was 'bridge over troubled water' the same track which launched the station.......After this a looped message was played saying the station was only available via DAB or internet....

Sure they were Laser 558; all Europe radio!
Caroline took their frequency when they sadly ceased broadcasting.

Great days of ILR. We had good stations by me in Midlands many years ago. Nowdays all taken over & networked, all playing trosh music. I Liten to Radio 2 nowdays. At least you hear likes of Bowie, Queen, Simple Minds. Not rubbish thats in top 40 these days..

Try Radio Caroline - still going, now licensed. I listen to its online stream via bluetooth earbuds from my iPhone, but its also on 648 kHz (4 kW) and DAB in some areas.

@@DavidEsp1 Yes, a good station. I think they are on Manx radio as Caroline North, unless im mistaken.

Yes, absolutely. Beacon and Trent stood out as maverick stations that tried to be good, only to be chastised by the IBA.

That appalling and over-long version of the National Anthem, what a bloody awful way to open a radio station. 1973! It might as well be 1953.

I wonder why they decided to launch at 5am?

    • @EllisFeaster
      @EllisFeaster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

craigr98 Probably because it’s the beginning of morning drive. Morning drive is when listening levels are at their highest, and most people would hear the new station.
