I think the problems you have with aiming the 12.7MM machine guns comes from the fact that you are used to American Browning .50 Cal, which is a higher velocity cartridge than the Italian version, meanwhile the 20mm is the same German 20mm cannon you have used for a long time, so they aim quite normally for you. Key point of importance, the Italian 12.7 has High explosive incendiary shells, which is not a feature of the Brownings.

The Italians had all kinds of really interesting aircraft. I'm not sure how thrilled I'd be flying that thing over Russian winter with the rear of the canopy having two big ol' gaping holes in it, but it's still a darn cool airplane.
because it has the 20mm gun pods, that counts as a C.202EC (where EC stands for "Esperimento cannoni", which means "Cannons experiment"), as the C.202 was one of the first testbeds for the MG 151 on italian aircraft (and i gotta say, the 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT combined with the 20 mm MG 151 is an insanely good combo) also, i'm not sure if the folgore also has that, but most italian fighters tried not only to counter act engine torque with different sized wings, but also propeller vortices by tilting the rudder at angle, making them overall very stable, both on the yaw and roll axis
The Germans rated the C.202 and felt its performance was superior to the Bf 109, but also recognized that it was essentially a hand built cottage industry plane. It required more than four times the labor to build, and substantially more skilled labor at that with far less automation and standardization. But what a beauty!

2,500 feet per second muzzle velocity was good enough! The MG 131 was no better! The Breda guns were heavier and low on rate of fire, but hit hard enough!
@@bryangeake5826agreed. Both were thumpers. My theory is they were intended for attacking bombers primarily. But few fighters would survive 3-4 hits from the wings forward, if the tail wasn't torn off, so if the pilot had skill, experience, and marksmanship, they were formidable.

The Breda-SAFAT 12.7mm round was basically a version of the British .50 Vickers cartridge. The round had a lower muzzle velocity, and therefore didn't fire as flat, compared to other common .50 inch/12.7mm rounds, and the rate of fire was also reduced because the guns were synchronized to fire through the propeller disc. That combination of characteristics would make them a little harder to hit with; lower rate of fire and more drop. The projectiles were lighter than the US .50 BMG but contained a small amount of explosive or incendiary filler, like aerial 15/20/30mm cannon of the period, though less effective. IIRC the German 151 20mm gun was actually only installed on the C.205, not the C.202, which only added one 7.7mm Mg in each wing.
Actually, 5 Macchi C.202 Folgores were experimentally equipped with the 20 mm cannon in underwing gondolas - 1 prototype and 4 others. The extra weight and drag of the cannon gondalas impaired the speed and agility of the C.202, and this C.202EC variant was therefore not put into production (although it would have made a useful bomber destroyer).
All nations loaded up their HMGs with explosive and/or incendiary bullets, making the Italian 12.7mm nothing special in that regard. Of course US and Soviet 12.7mm had better armor piercing and incendiary performance, due to bigger, higher velocity bullets.

The HMG had 12.7x81mmSR Vickers, which was weaker than the American .50BMG (12.7x99mm) and Soviet 12.7x108mm. 5:10 The "extended wingtip on one side to beat propeller torque" thing is a trick the designer may have picked up from control-line model airplanes, where it is common.
