Bob Ross of garage building! Love the gambrel style. Snow load is an issue, but it also gives insulation if you do plan to have a small apartment. Seriously considering it as a style for a cabin off grid. Dual angle roof is near perfect up here in Canada for solar panels in summer and winter.

Ken, In your videos you are usually building garages in rural settings with lots of land. As I live in a typical suburban sub-division with a pitifully paltry single car garage, I almost always ask the same question to the owner of your latest project - WHY THE H*** ARE YOU MAKING THAT GARAGE SO SMALL??????? When it comes to garages, BIGGER IS ALWAY BETTER!!!! At a minimum, my dream garage has room for two cars and is deep enough to slip the boat trailer sideways in the back for winter storage. Speaking of winter, I definitely want enough width to keep the snow blower tucked in a front corner. Lastly, there has to be room for a substantial work bench with all-season access. We all need a dream...... ;-)

I'm building a gambrel style office in my yard, 12-ft x 18-ft x 15 feet high, built on a 6-inch thick slab. The basic ministerial permit for exterior construction is $500.00. If I added electricity to the mnisterial permit the fee increases to 1,000.00. Getting a discretionary permit for adding electricity and plumbing then defines the structure as livable and the fees increase to $3,500.00 IF THE building department approves it. Since my quarter acre lot is in a Single family residences zone and a fully appointed second garage or shop could be used as a granny apartment not allowed in our zoning, the fees rapidly increase to $5,000.00 if the department declares it suitable for a second residence. Even the slab poor must be permitted for $300.00. I do most work without permits but then I always over build. This saves me no money but I'd rather fivethe money to the contractors instead of the city department.

I'd have a 6 car garage and a one bedroom house. With that green screen I've no idea what's real anymore. Again a treasure trove of information really relaxing to watch. Anybody who has a single floor shed you've no idea what your missing it's really fun to fall down the shed stairs and not be found for a good 24hrs the steps were made by my good self they were dangerous. We've a wee hoist pully for taking things upstairs now.

Ken, my site has a 24 foot or so run with a lot of clearance on the North and not as much clearance to the South. (Residential power lines). I want to build a combination Mono-GambrelAttic truss so I get that storage over the north end and further maximize the south slope for solar panels.
I'm thinking I should build two separate complete truss and use an interior wall at 12 foot from the north wall, and intersect the hip of the mono truss with the hip of the Gambrel truss. I'll only get a height of 5 feet and a width of maybe 8 feet, but that will allow me to store those light flat things that take up space like rails, 2x4, and light boxes.
I haven't seen any such custom work with a Gambrel truss.

I wanted a two story, but my city says that the limit on a garage height is 15 feet measured halfway between the eave and peak. I can make a wider garage of up to 40 feet, with a depth of up to 30. Similar to the carriage shed, and a Cape Cod. Or, a Cap Cod style, with a side sloping addition of about 16 feet.

The green screen you are starting to use is so handy for voiceovers. Be careful to not move around too much when you’re talking because you have the motion on the screen plus your own pacing. I still like em.
Also, be careful when the ‘you’ on the screen gets bigger than the ‘you’ on the voiceover. Scares my cat!

How do you handle sketchy property lines?. If the owner says he wants it in a certain place and later its discovered to be across a line, who is responsible??
