    Nailing into the studs is something you dont see often. Couldnt tell you how many renovations ive done where siding guys just drive the nails anywhere and so many times right into the wire sheathing. Just a simple thing that shows kens attention to detail and that he cares about quality work!

    I don't know how you do it. Love your videos. I'm in Plymouth MA.

    Great job! I could handle living in a garage/apartment like that. My wife wants something much larger with more rooms. More rooms for more stuff. Give me a bedroom, bathroom, and a place to make and eat meals and I'd be happy! Thanks for sharing the information and experience with us!

    Thanks Ken for taking all of us along on this adventure in building it the right way, well done sir...As the old saying goes, " word of mouth " is the cheapest form of advertising & that is how I discovered your garage builds, i.e. word of mouth...I would think the owners are very pleased with the outcome of this project Ken...

    Hi Ken, your constant watch of lumber prices really drives home the cost of inflation. Remembering my first house was purchased in 1974 for the exorbitant price of $19,900.
    Separate garage included. Equivalent of a year and a half's income. Nowadays $59,000 for garage only and $300,000 for a house is more like the equivalent of 6 or 7 years wages for the average guy. I'm glad I'm not in the market for either! Keep up the nice work!

    Bostitch makes an adapter for a 1/2” crown stapler that lines up the staple leg with the vinyl siding slot. Also, there is an adapter for the battery dewalt roofing gun. Kinda neat. Your doing the best way anyways. Looks good!

    You mentioned the roofing nailer not working on the siding installation....for years I always used a porter cable medium crown stapler with a siding attachment. It was just a plastic piecethat clipped on the end of the gun. I could do an install as fast as two people. It really did work well (but for the siding only) hand nailed all trim and soffit.

    Can you imagine building a home for $150k these days? I say 150k just to price high but it may very well be less. You said the bathroom may be the only “closed” room. I’d love to see the apartment once completed. Wow, awesome job, Ken. Hey, can you imagine if Chad were the one to repair/rebuild that home 30 years from now and finding that autographed lumber? The thought alone brings me to tears. Thank you for sharing.

    Thanks for answering my question about using the roofing nailer on vinyl siding. Figured there was a good reason. I think I remember correctly that when nailing, the nail should not be so tight that the siding can't move with the hot and cold cycles. Maybe some company will come up with a nailer for such.

    • @Tomhohenadel
      @Tomhohenadel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The siding nails must not be tight. The siding must be able to move with temperature changes.

    Good little retirement home apartment.
    If one is Downsizing.
    When I did my carpentry and joinery apprenticeship, we had to install 8 doors, install our own jambs, plane the door to fit, chisel out the hinges and hang, in one day.
    Memories.

    As someone who spends several days a week out on jobsites I can tell you that in many ways, the WORST thing that ever happened to the construction industry was the invention of the pneumatic nail gun! At that point, the focus of construction shifted from doing things well, to doing things quickly! Especially with vinyl siding, using a good old manual hammer allows you to finesse the nails exactly as you need to, while simply pulling the trigger on a gun invariably drives the fastener either too tight or too loose.
    If I were single, I could live quite happily in a little garage apartment like that, although I would want a few additional garage stalls to make room for more collector cars! Alas, my wife has different ideas when it comes to deciding what suffices as an adequate living arrangement..….😂

      True Statement. I followed up with my potential Cape Style Garage/Guest House builder just yesterday. Back in May I decided against starting the project, as I was just not comfortable with the expense and scarcity of materials. He sated that earlier in the year he had workers, but no material(s); and now he has material(s), but no workers. Very Frustrating...

    I have watched most of your videos and I applaud the excellent work and videography. I have been wanting to ask this question for a very long time and here we go......As a DIYer with a lot of curiosity, I'm trying to understand when you need a footer in a cold climate for a large slab. Honestly before watching your videos I always assumed it was necessary.

    • @kenskarpentry
      @kenskarpentry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the ground is prepared correctly and the ground slopes away so that moisture isn’t allowed under the slab it will work well. I just saw a slab we did 20 years ago and it looks like new. We’ve done around 400 slabs like this over the past 35 years with great results. Thanks for asking

  • @valorrussell7772
    @valorrussell7772 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with using roofing nails for vinyl siding is if u get just one nail too tight and with expansion from the heat will make it look horrible. The siding needs to be able to move.
