Thank you so much. I am originally from Venezuela and I remember my Lebanese neighbors preparing this delicious dish to share it with us. I had forgotten how to do it. I prepared it and tasted heaven. Thank you again. Beautiful memories came to me while eating :D
Thank you both for giving out instructions and not just talking to fill up airspace. Comments like adding parsley to the salad, using bulghur instead of rice, lightly stirring in the fried onions to avoid mashing the rice, etc. were informative.
Hello, my sister who was married to a Lebanese man taught me an alternative method. She first fried the onions which she removed from the pan when caramelized then added the lentils and rice in the same dish she cooked the onions in. This method gives a great flavour to the lentils and rice instead of just cooked in water.
Nafisa, I just want to say thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos. I am american and my husband palistinian. My mother in law is from Lebanon and a VERY GOOD COOK. For twenty years being married my cooking has always been compared to hers. Never was my food good enough, but now that I am watching your videos I am gaining confidence and learning all kinds of details you pay attention to explain. My husband and family are very impressed with my improvement. Thank You.
You made my day--that is exactly why I do these videos, to empower people and give them confidence! So glad to hear your cooking is getting positive attention, hope you subscribe to get all my new recipes--happy cooking! ;)
I’m at this yesterday for the first time for dinner. I am visually impaired, 42 years old, African-American I’m learning levantine Arabic right now and I really enjoyed your videos this is an amazing dish to eat and to make and it doesn’t cost a lot to make either.
Thanks so much for trying this, yes for about 10 dollars you can feed a lot of people with this dish without sacrificing flavor. Welcome to the channel, you are in the right place for this type of cuisine! ;)
Sahten to two beautiful ladies. Although I cooked that dish often, I enjoyed watching you both. The chemistry between mother and daughter is so inspiring. Thank you and God bless!
I came across your channel a few days ago. I really enjoy your videos, along with your beautiful mom. I am Christian middle eastern as well, I'm Assyrian born and raised in Germany. My mom is from Syria so I got in touch with a lot of these dishes and spices. I love that you explain about the dishes, spices, etc. thank you ❤️
Thank you for your lovely comment Lona, if you have any family in Syria I hope they are ok and that Syria will enter an era of peace this year. Welcome to our cooking family, glad to have you join us! ;) xo
Blanche and Vera, I never comment on things, but I have been making this for a couple years from your recipe, and it is the absolute best! Everyone I make it for is surprised and loves it. I am a health coach and teach cooking classes with my clients and this is so share worthy. Thank you so much. Keep up the great healthy cooking!
Wow we are honored you tried and loved the recipe, especially as a health coach and cooking teacher! Thank you and you spreading the word helps keep us going, have a healthy and fabulous new year!
Hi from Ecuador. I just did your recipe for mom and me. it came out delicious. I did it with four onions and they weren't enough! So delicious! thank you!
This is the first video I watch on your channel,I love the way you present your dish here, old fashioned way, you're sweet and real and so is your Mom. about Mujaddara,I keep the onions out and just pour the oil in from the pan,,some of my family members do not like onions.I also add some olive oil to the rice and lentils at the beginning.thank you ladies and best regards From Amman
YOUR RECIPE IS VERY GOOD INDEED. I MAKE A VERSION OF THIS RICE WHICH IS AS FOLLOWS: AFTER THE ONIONS ARE ALMOST FRIED, I ADD CHOPPED DATES AND RAISINS AND THOROUGHLY MIX WITH THE ONIONS FOR ABOUT 3-4 MINUTES. THEN ADD SAFFRON INFUSED IN LITTLE HOT WATER TO THE MIXTURE AND ADD THE LOT TO THE LENTIL RICE. JUST THOUGHT TO SHARE THIS.
1, wow never thought of adding camun to injectable, we always just did it with salt and pepper. 2 you can never have too many onions, my gtarandmother would dice some into the rice,& fry crispy for on top. My mother, she carmalises the onions like mad, again mote the merrier, and pours it and it's oil on the rice as it cooks in the oven, the longer itmcooks, the darker it gets and so so good. Yes, in my house, from my grandma, we like to start it, & most rice things, on the stove & finish it in the oven. You put it in the oven when the water comes to a boil or when the water comes just about to the level of the rice. Also also, yogurt is a classic combo with injedra, and or Syrian tomato salad. Perfect comfort food Side note, never heard of it being done with buragol, but it must give a great textural difference, also I'd consider then baking it to give it that extra crunch on the top, like youmwould, with buragol b'jibm.
Mamma is adorable. The way she makes it with love. The little things like the way she mixes it 😭😭😭. Is what made me become a chef but obviously my mom was my inspiration. Very good content.
I find coriander and fried onions works better for texture, adds a crunch. I’m not much on vegetarian cooking so I add this as a side dish to a nice roast. My mother prefers to just eat it plain. But a nice vinegar and tomato based sauce goes very well Mujaddara. Your recipe goes very well!
I love you two! So much fun watching the interaction! Reminds me of my being home as a young man and watching my mom cook! She also was fantastic. She taught me how to cook and now I have passed it down to my wonderful daughter who like her Sita is a wonderful cook!
I am not a fan of cumin, because it reminds me of bad odor from ppls underarm. After watching this video over 10 times, I finally made it today and added a teaspoon of cumin seeds. I was surpried how well cumin matches with lentils, the caramelized onion is like the whip cream of a cake, I am amazed how flavorful a vegetarian dish can be. Thank you Blanche! I love watching your videos, please keep them coming.
The Roman legion would add as much cumin allowed to their lentils to taste or if they cooked chickpeas they were allowed as much wine to taste. This mix of cumin and lentils is as old as the Ancient Egyptian Empire. Our ancestors knew best!
I come back to this video about once a year when I forget the steps to good mujaddara, and every time I become less bad at it! Jaja. Thank you so much Blance and Vera
Definely goes awesome with yougert , put plain yougert , crushed garlic , salt , lots of mint and diced cucumbers and 3 spoon of water just to thin it out a bit . Majedera looks delish , u guys work so nicely together !! Thanks for sharing the recipe 😊
I made this dish today and it was a fantastic lunch! The onions were the focal point of the creation. Love how it's all wholesome and everything gets well incorporated. The cumin with its warm and earthy tones makes this a perfect dish anytime. True middle eastern comfort food!
I just love watching you in the kitchen with your mom Vera. I love your recipe using rice. I grew up eating the cracked wheat version with yogurt and salad. I will start making your recipe. Looks delicious and simple to make. Thank you for the beautiful demonstration. 👍🎄🤶
Can't wait to try this. Greeks make lentils a lot as a soup. This sounds like a wonderful way to also have lentils which are very healthy, full of iron. Going to make it tonight with my daughters!!!
thank you for this recipe. its simple with a few ingredients and tastes good. thank you & your lovely mother for handing down your ancestors' authentic dishes.
Two beauties in the kitchen!..mum & daughter who look more like sisters!...I will definitely be trying this gorgeous recipe asap, hello from the UK I just joined!
I made this just over a week ago, my family loved it. So I made it yesterday for company (adding some toasted slivered almonds). The only problem is there were no leftovers. So I'm making it again right now. Delicious!!
I had this last night with a herbed tahini dressing of parsley, dill, garlic, evoo, lemon juice, water and tahini paste. In the blender for 90 seconds, stopping to scrape the sides and top incorporated into the blades and that dressed my salad 🥗 🥗 🥗 A truly wonderful culinary experience, with such simplicity.
Hello Blanche, thank u so much for this recipe. It was my 1st time cooking Mjadara yesterday for my friends following ur recipe & they absolutely love it!!!! They literally swallow the entire pot of rice! If I hadn't stopped them, they would swallow my pot too.
I've been making this for a while but I stubmbled upon this NOW (MArch 7, 2018) THANK YOU. I add more spice and cauliflower and chick peas but my combo always comes out sticky. I am going to Totally try this (this weekend. cause i could live off this, and it's lent!) so happy I stumble upon this. THank you, and Happy Easter (from the Irish Catholic) :D
It’s always nice to reserve part of the fried onions and add them on top of the already plated mujaddara. Besides the yogurt topping, a side of turnip pickles (lift) goes very well with this dish. Great show by a really nice duo!
You both are so beautiful ❤ Thank you for all your recipes! They are easy and tasty. I married my Lebanese husband 30 years ago and have been cooking all kinds of recipes for him. We are eating mjedra today. He likes it with pickled vegetables and pita bread. You two are so blessed to have each other. I wish I still had my mother she passed in 1987. I love watching your cooking shows. ❤❤
I just made this dish for dinner, and my partner and I love it! I don't eat vegetarian dishes on their own often, but this is something I can definitely eat all the time! The flavours blend so well together and the smooth silky caramelised onions give the dish a sweetness that mellows the cumin. I prepared some yogurt with garlic and cucumber to enjoy with it, and it added that extra tangy and garlicky goodness to the dish. Thanks for the amazing recipes and keep them coming, Blanche! Greetings from Seattle!
I have never had this dish before. I made it this afternoon following your recipe/instructions. It is so good. My new favourite comfort food, and it is so good for you. Thank you.
Hi Blanche!!! You, Cooking Goddess, have given us the really perfect mujaddara recipe!!! I´ve cooked it yesterday: supreme!!! Tks! regards from Argentina!
Love you folks! Love the way you two cook together! Mom is so serious and daughter does such an excellent job of narration. God Bless you guys! Sam PS: Love Mujadara made with wheat. That is how Mom used to make it! Love your salad too!
They say there's no room for 2 Cooks in the kitchen, but it seems to work with you two. I love watching your videos. I am new to your Channel. What a lovely dish.
Lovely, and I remember my mother preparing it when I was little. I was born in Cairo ,Egypt and we had to leave in 1956, my family came to the uk. Very long story, but i am now in my mid seventies and I am going by memory and how I remember the look and the taste of how things tasted and looked at Especially the food mum and grandma cooked both of Italian background but Egyptian food the best and a great variety…. Thank you.
It is a feast to see both mom and daughter cook together to show one of your regions fav rice dishes. Will try it out and let u know. U both look so gorgeous..❤️
I absolutely adore mujadara and love to take some for lunch to work. For something that's so easy to make, it tastes delicious and is super nutritious. I really like how your mamma stirs the onion through the rice - the onion really brings this dish together and having it in every bite means perfection! I'll be following her suggestion when I make it myself next time so a big thank you for her tip. Merci kteer! 😁 ~ Leyla
WOW!! I just made this dish and it turned out FANTASTIC!! Last week i made ur homemade hummus. AWESOME!!! MY parents are from Puerto Rico and i was born here in NY; cooking Middle Eastern food makes me appreciate other cultures than my own. Especially if the food comes out as delicious. as yours. Thanks for talking the time to show us.❤❤❤. I LOVE YOUR MOM, also!
Thank you so much my dear, I absolutely LOVE Puerto Rico and the people there, hope your parents are ok after those horrible hurricanes. I appreciate your feedback and welcome to our Middle Eastern family! ;)
Thank you for sharing this recipe, my Mom use to make this with brown lentils! I am making this tomorrow with green large lentils.! I like to add my tomato, onion, cucumber salad to the Mujaddara like you do as well, now I wanna try yogert!
I always loved mujaddara but never tried it with the salad till I saw this video. That's such an awesome way to have it, thanks. With lots of lemon juice and sumac!
I love your video. You both look so beautiful and classy dressed so nice. I look forward to making this. I have a food truck in South Dakota. It's on my drawing board to make this for a Native American gathering later this month. I was told to find some vegetarian dishes to prepare...and this looks so good. I will let you know if I serve it and what people think.
Mujaddara is also a traditional dish in Cyprus. It is called Μουτζέντρα (pronounced moujendra). My mother used to make it. We often added yoghurt, lemon juice and croutons on top. This type of lentil dish is mention in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Gen 25 verse 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Very interesting! But is there more information about whether the lentil stew really was Μουτζέντρα / Mujadara or something else? There a lot of other traditional dishes in the region that are made from lentils and can be described in this way. Also, I really love your beautiful country. I went there twice. And I am currently learning Greek in my free time, so I will check your channel out! :)
Looks amazing! I make this once a week. I add chopped onions to the lentils and rice whilst cooking as well as caramelised onions on top. Great tips thanks xx
Thank you . Best wishes for you and especially your lovely mum , so pretty, classy and sweet. (You too for sure) So aware of the kitchen secrets and she share them so humbly It is wonderful you joined her to your channel Thank you again
Wonderful. Another favorite of mine. One difference in our process is we cut the onions a little smaller and saute' them in the dame pot before cooking the lentils. I found this gives added flavor to the dish (and one less pan to wash). Also, we often top it with Arabic cabbage salad (my own creation). It's an amazing combination. Even cold in Arabic bread with the cabbage salad. Great for picnics.

Wow 😳 I just found a fantastic weekly staple - beautiful presentation from two lovely ladies 👍
Thank you.
Love that you shared your vivid memory. Thanks for watching!
I just discovered your channel, and enjoyed watching you make Mujaddara. I’m not vegetarian, but I love this dish, especially with the salad!!!
It is a feast to see both mom and daughter cook together to show one of your regions fav rice dishes. Will try it out and let u know. U both look so gorgeous..❤️
Yes keep us posted, thanks so much and enjoy the recipe (and remember no such thing as too much onions lol)
Great presentation, my mom used to keep the onions to the end and then place on top of the Mujaddareh.
I eat it with yogurt as well.🙏
I absolutely adore mujadara and love to take some for lunch to work. 😁 ~ Leyla
Yes it is so much more interesting and healthier than the average sandwich, and no such thing as too many onions. Hope you enjoy the recipe!
Liked ypur cooking and conversation ❤️

I appreciate your feedback and welcome to our Middle Eastern family! ;)

I always loved mujaddara but never tried it with the salad till I saw this video. That's such an awesome way to have it, thanks. With lots of lemon juice and sumac!
krnewman Yes the salad is a must! Thanks for your feedback! ;)
Yum! I'm going to make this for dinner thanks
Carrie Linde Thanks you so much! I hope they enjoy it as much as our family does, let me know how it goes! ;)
How it went Carrie?
I make this dish at least once a week! My husband loves it and my kids finally came around to loving it. Sahtain!!
WONDERFUL! Thanks for your feedback and so glad you enjoy this dish!
Thank you, I will pass your sweet message on to her ;)
Love your ideas, I love cabbage salad with anything!
Thank you for this video, it's so delicious simple and cheap!
Great job that reminds me when I was a little girl growing up in Middle East and my mom used to make it all the time it looks delicious
