Been hunting since I was 6 and grew up around hunting and firearms and the gun is never the reason you miss the is going to what is it made to to do it is up to you to maintain the rifle
This video is spot on and so so true. I have a Remington 770 chambered in the .30-06 that was pure trash and not even minute of barn door accurate. I picked it up cheap and after some work "accurizing" it and LDs and shooting sub .5" MOA groups, the rifle holds its own against my Kimber and Sig Cross.
I recently picked up a new Savage 110 stainless and when I went to engage the safety it wouldn’t go into safe. I tried cycling the action many times and the safety wouldn’t engage and the trigger couldn’t be pulled. I finally got the safety to work but when I took the safety off the firing pin would fall without pulling the trigger. I showed this issue to the dealer and he said it was the grease they used when they ship it. I told him it is a safety issue and it should be pulled from the shelves and notify Savage immediately. I’ll never buy any Savage from this experience, it was obviously not checked when it left the factory. For a similar price, the Tikka and Browning x bolt felt far superior and I knew it wouldn’t have safety and trigger problems.
I have a Savage Axis and did several videos with it on my channel. I had issues with the extractor out of the box. Replaced that. If anyone buys this gun, they HAVE to work on the trigger or replace it: no doubt about that! The magazine wiggles a bit when inserted. The bolt has wiggle when fully extended. Not a huge deal for a budget gun but those get better as you buy a "better" gun. The trigger guard is plastic. I didn't get a heavy barrel but if you range shoot often it's worth it. The stock is not great. If you use a tripod, it's best to replace. The coating on the barrel isn't as durable as bluing . My best groups, out of the box, were 1.5 MOA at 100 yds. I haven't replaced the stock yet, but will likely be doing so and seeing if that tightens groups. While you don't HAVE to do modifications, I think those will help the gun last longer and be better to shoot!
Good to see a good review on the Savage.Most of mine are Savage and i love them.To me,i dont need a work of art.A firearm is a tool and i dont want to worry about scracthing it.Im fine with no bluing and a black stock is fine with me.

In 4 years and over 500 rounds through my Axis in 30-06, I have never had a poor cartridge feed like you did.
Oh man i wish it was easier to own silencer/suppressor in the us for you guys . It's absolutely a fantastic extra tool for hunting.

I own both as well, Sako 270 caliber stainless... Axis stainless. Equal guns, huge price difference, biggest problem the Sako mags fail, nothing new know Sako Tikka mags suck, plenty of videos I get it. that said around here we cannot load a rifle and drive. Put 3 rounds in a Sako mag all but one pops back out..lol. I notice the loose bolt all the way back was a concern. Savage advanced the old military one piece bolt to improve accuracy, I expect the rest will follow the floating bolt face just as they try to copy the Accutrigger and button rifling back into the mainstream. Nice to see the conversation started here the it is high time these overpriced brands are called out for less than equal quality to 400 dollar guns!!

I Bought one of the Savage Axis rifles it was the plain jane Black model it came with a 3x9 Bushnell Banner scope it was chambered in 270 Winchester the trigger is heavy but breaks clean and the rifle groups very tight at 100 yards.I changed the scope and I also put a rail on it. along with a better set of rings,The rifle is lite weight and I love hunting with it.I got the whole deal for under 250 dollars ,and I like it.I have several rifles I can choose from when I go hunting ,But I like the Savage .

@@micus09 thank you,I hope you have a great and safe season also ,I just got home from building a small blind for my 7 yr. old Grandson.this weekend is opening Youth season here .I have a little bolt action Stevens model 59 in .410 I am going to let him use with slugs,he has been telling me that he is going to get me a Bear this year.him and his Daddy have done tree'd 3 so far .but it is only chase season for now.but it is looking like my chances of skinning a Bear are real good this season.

I just picked up an axis for something to fiddle with. Plus I needed something in .308. We'll see what it can do. The main reason for the Savage is the barrel nut.
Actually the 1-11 will not hinder you on the heavier loads. 210 Berger's minimum twist for the 210VLD is 1-11. So load heavy if you like and that SaKo looks nice.
In terms of feeding, my Winchester model 70 (made by Browning) controlled round feed is excellent. Very smooth and reliable, at least that is my experience.

Great review! A cheap-ass SAVAGE AXIS, when put into a $150 Boyds stock and pillar-bedded, will shoot as accurately as ANY other of-the-shelf hunting rifle out there, cost be damned. Of course, it will not be as accurate as a heavy-weight, bull-barrel target rifle in a chassis, but one needs to compare apples with apples.
I hunted deer for 40 years with a Marlin 44 Mag but passed that rifle down to my oldest son. I bought a Savage Axis (came with pre-installed scope) in 30.06. Shoots fine. The Savage package was right ~ $400.
Oh, my ammo? Remington Core-Lokt 180 grain. And, my stock scope and rings run fine. I’ve used scopes all my life and I have more confidence in cheap/inexpensive scopes (with my experience level) than internet firearm experts. And, FWIW, my Savage has wood furniture - as do most of my rifles.

Tbh, while I'm not new to firearms, I am new to hunting. But, I know a good deal when I see it, and I *love* this rifle!
I love the one .22 lr Savage rifle I have. I get one inch groups at 100 yards with match ammunition. If Savage made revolvers they'd really give Ruger a run for their money. Other makers would notice as well.
I believe most guns built today will be sufficient for what your needs are..the money comes with better parts,stock,weight distribution etc thus a longer lasting gun as well..I shoot a savage 308 because face it.how many times are you really gonna shoot it in a year..i only hunt deer n pigs here in Texas...no need for larger gun..where I aim is where it hits at 100yrds..I also put a sightmark 6.5 x on it.. a lower end scope but does the job perfect for me..I only use Hornady precision ammo..anyway just my opinion..if I had stupid money i would buy more exspensive for lighter weight n better metal parts for rust or corrosion..
i own 5 savage axis 2s they all shoot exceptional groups , when cleaned it takes at least 5 shots for my groups to tighten up just sayin
That's called fouling the barrel and is quite common!!! The long range shooters I know literally never clean their barrels after they break them in!!!
My Dad and his friends are fanatics about not cleaning a seasoned barrel!!! They all shoot custom 7mm mags because they carry more energy past 1k yards than the 300 mag but they'll easily shoot 1600 round without ever cleaning the inside of the barrel!!!
So in practical terms the Savage shot as well as the Sako. Even cheap rifles these days have good barrels, so the performance edge for the expensive ones is nothing like as big as it was 50 years ago. The Japanese Howas are another example.
In 2023 I would not bother with an expensive rifle unless I was getting a custom job for some reason.
The accuracy you got with both rifles was "minute of deer" to any reasonable range (inside 400 yards).... says a lot for modern automatic machinery that makes thee low cost rifles.
First rifle I bought was also savage axis. Was able to get fairly consistent 1 1/4 inch groups with fed blue box but could never get below with 2 inch with Winchester
Derek Thompson hey Derek. Yah they are pretty accurate rifles. Mine really likes hornady Amax 168s. If you are looking to handload this would be a great place to start
@@micus09 I'm just recently got my savage axis XP and I have the Hornady 165gr full boar ammo so I'm going to try that, since at the factory the axis was calibrated and tested with Sierra game king 168grains

I'm a huge Sako fan but Ruger Savage Remington Bergara and Howa are fantastic rifles for the price.
I've thought about buying a axis bcuz they are inexpensive. I own a model 10 and like it, just heavy for hunting. With that said, I'm very interested in a Sako. Great vid. I'd like to see follow ups
Well if your looking for a bang around , accurate, cheap hunting tool you cant go wrong with an axis. If you want high end quality, smoothness, craftsmanship go sako. In my opinion it's just like a watch, a timex and Rolex will both tell the time for years and years. Good luck with whatever you choose man, happy hunting.
I looked at the axis and the 110 but I am not a fan of long throw bolts for reloading. I opted for the browning ab3 as my coyote rifle and the xbolt for my big game rifle. Three lugs short bolt throw and mag fed.
No need to waste $2000+ on a rifle. The Savage is every bit as capable as the Sako.
At the end of the hunt is that deer going to be any more dead because it was shot with the $2,200 Sako instead of a $400 Savage? No.
Every rifle and ammo manufacturer has products that will safely and reliably bring down all North American game.
You just have to decide is it really worth the extra money to buy an expensive rife. Less expensive does not mean less reliable or less safe.
The same with ammo, Remington Core-Lokt has been around since 1939. It is a standard load with a pointed soft point projectile and has probably taken more game than any other rifle round in North America. It is likely the least expensive rifle round on the shelf.
Again if you shoot a deer with $50 box ammo will that deer be any more dead than if it was shot with a $18 box of Remington Core-Lokt? No.
I can assure you that the majority of people who own hunting rifles have never hunted a day in their life. And the majority of the people that do hunt have always stuck to the basics and not spent more money than necessary on hunting equipment including rifle and ammo.
Two years ago I harvested a beautiful 8 point buck in West Texas with a Remington model 700 and Hornady American Whitetail.
The rifle was manufactured in 1974, I added a Hogue overmolded stock and a Leupold 3-9x40 scope that I had on the shelf that was about 20 years old. That rifle scope combination is probably worth $200, the ammo at $19 a box. The combo is perfectly functional and capable as any rifle and scope combination manufactured this year.
The real question is not whether the gun is worth it the real question is should you spend the extra money for something that won't bring down North American game any more effectively or reliably than the least expensive rifle.
Even if you can afford a more expensive rifle, should you buy it? Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I've shot Remington Core-Lokt for 23 years. I've shot 23 deer, a cow elk, and 3 black bear. It is the only ammo I hunt with and has put many pounds of meat on the table for me. Core-lokt is truly the "deadliest mushroom in the woods."

great video just watched it today 3 years after you uploaded it, goes to prove something I said to my mates when I bought a ruger american in 270 a year ago. I copped a lot of flak about cheaping out, but it's my hunting rifle it bounces around in trucks and bashes its way through thick cover and when it counts it will put every round I fire within 3" of point of aim between 25 and 300 metres. for anything I shoot that is meat on the table just the same as thier $2000 sako or tikka. would I choose the same rifle for comp paper punching, probably not but the ruger hasn't let me down for it's purpose.

A Remington 700 or Ruger American will kill any game that a Weatherby or Sako will kill. As far as I'm concerned I will take a $400 or $600 rifle all day long over a "Fancy Lad" rifle.

Yano i know this is an older video but i purchased a savage Axis I in 6.5 Creedmooor.I'd love to hear about any after market triggers or trigger kits i could get to upgrade it?Also i found an upgrade kit for the magazine.Its made by Armament Training products and its a proprietary product that will allow you to use any Savage brand magazine in the savage axis rifles.So you can use a 10rd mag in them now.Once the kit is installed it allows you to not only use the 10rd mags but also you can trim off the huge plastic tab off or your original mag and use it as well so u dont lose the use of the smaller mags as well,adding to the capacity you can carry without re-loading a mag in the field.

Load testing with hand loads out of the sako is where you will see the best results. Half inch groups easy. Cheap ammo is no test of any rifle
My finnlite shoots 3/8 groups with factory Hornady precision hunters. But where my sako falls short is the design flaw of there action and you can see it even in this video when he ejects the casing they hit his scope.
The best of these fast food accurate rifles are the Tikkas. The Sako will be a heirloom where as the Savage you pass down to the son you like the least!
Just saw this vid. good review although I would have liked to see the ejection on the Sako. Thinking of a Sako 85 in Synthetic Black in 270 or 06 however there are off and on comments of the ejection on the Sako being that it is not robust and some seem to hang up. Not sure about that as the one's I've seen on TH-cam seem to be magnums.
Hi larry, I have had a number of large scopes on my 85, including a NF nxs. I have heard lots speak to this issue as well. I may be lucky but in all the scopes I've had on the rifle I e yet to have any ejection issues. I've taken 3 or 4 bears with it and probably 6 deer, the little finn has been flawless in the field for me and you barely feel it on your back. Good luck, merry christmas.
I've got a savage model 110 but my clip is made into the gun. It doesn't pop in from the bottom like your savage does
1:11 twist is optimal for 168 and 175 grain .30 caliber. 1:10 will stabilize the heaviest of your .30 calibers.

The Savage Axis rings are bad but the 2 pieces of base is worse... It is not even up to rail standard. None of my other rings can mount properly on the factory base. I have a 1 piece rail coming from Cabelas now hopefully it will arrive next week and I can mount it on the rifle. The default factory scope mounting messed up so bad that I crank max to the Left and the scope will not even center and still lean to the right. After took off the scope and etc completely and remount it then it kinda solved the problem.
That's a good solution. I have a weaver 1 piece rail on this rifle and it's great.

Terry Ostash Hi Terry. I have heard of this problem as well and was somewhat Leary of it. I have never had this occur with my rifle and I am running the Sako low optilock steel rings with a 1 " diameter scope . I think you will love your 85.
The problem can occur with very long cartridges with scopes that have large turrets. Keep the turrets low with those cartridges. This can occur with a lot of rifles/scope combinations.
I do not have a Sako, but want one quite badly.
When thinking about spending $1,800-$2,200 on a rifle I'm not just thinking about dollars, but generations. I've handled the Savage Axis II, Ruger American, and just about every cheap gun on the market. Those guns feel nothing like my CZ 527 or 455, or even my Tikka T3 Forest, which are low end guns by most standards at $650-$800.
I hunt, A LOT, and I put my guns through absolute hell. Both my CZ and my Tikka are topped with Leupold VX-5HD's, which people also cheap out on glass, too. My hunting habits are what made me choose CZ and Tikka, and why I want a Sako. In 20 years, I know these rifles will most likely look and function like a Remington from 1928 does today. The same can't be said about the $300 rifles on the market today. They're not generational guns like the old Winchester Model 70's or 94's, or even the old Remington 700's.
So, if you don't plan on passing your guns down to children, buy the budget friendly. If you want a gun that can wear your history and your children's, and their children's, and so on, then buy top shelf. Not to mention, Sakos usually INCREASE in value over time whereas all the cheap rifles sell for $100-$125 used...

Well said. The “cheapest possible” crowd have pretty much ruined American firearm manufacturing. All my hunting rifles are now European because they understand quality. CZ, Sako, Tikka, even Zastava (though they start out a bit rough). I hate cheap. And you’re right that goes for glass too.

i have a axis 30-06 and for $420 Canadian you cant go wrong. In Ontario your not shooting much more that 150 yards anyway with how thick our woods are.
I totally agree. I have shot this particular rifle beyond 500 yds a number of times with a simple bdc reticle. They are tough to beat for a starter rifle, truck gun, or just plain old beat around battle axe- everyone needs a solid ugly gun lol.
yep it a tough gun that's for sure. I did get the stainless steel unit i don't mind the look of it. I have had the jam issue when loading a round slow you do need to slam the round in. I thought the same thing about the plastic clip on magazine but have never had any issue with it in 7 year of moose hunting in all kinds of crap weather.
Most game in Texas are taken from a deer blind not more than 75 100 yards away from a feeder so there's no reason to spend that kind of money for a long range rifle or ammunition... unless you just like to spend money.

A Savage, Remington and Bergara is something you buy because you don´t have other options. Either because you cant afford anything else, because you don´t know any better or simply can´t get anything else.

What is all this "can't hand down an Axis B.S.?
I have literally killed herds of critters with both of my Axis rifles. The only mod My rifles have is an MCarbo trigger kit. Both my Axis rifles punch same hole hits with any factory ammo up to 300 yds, many times at 500. Never more than 1/4 moa at 500 (Win ammo) my rifles have been dropped, slammed and treated like any other tool. I keep them clean and dry but I use them, hard. The high dollar rifles don't look any better than an Axis to my eyes and I have seen boat loads of high dollar rifles shoot like crap at the range, shooter error? Maybe. If you feel better paying more for your rifle then that's what you need . It's all personal preference I guess. The Axis is sexy to me but maybe that's because they've served me so well. As far as hand down, I'll be proud to pass on a 20 year old (by then) Axis that's killed generations of kritters to my boys. By his own admission, his Axis has never let him down, so why knock it?
Not knocking anyone's choices in rifles, just think the Axis line is way better than it gets credit for.
Well said, I am about to get the MCarbo trigger kit for my Axis. Also most of my shooting is trap shooting with a shotgun. I shoot well with a 16 year old Browning Ultra XTR. It's great and I perform better than many of my competitors with supposedly better guns. I am on a mission to prove that with a half decent even old gun if you can shoot you can shoot. You do not need an expensive gun.

Don’t buy a rifle without Fixed sights on the receiver and barrel: many scopes can lose zero and must be checked others can still break , fixed iron sights are a great way to check the scope zero automatically just use see thru scope mounts to see your sights. The industry changed to no fixed sights to force people to always use scope thus getting more money
Has your savage axis ever misfired.And if yes, what did you do to correct it.
Had a friend that was having misfires. It was too much oil inside the bolt and on the firing pin. Came that way from the factory. Cleaned everything out, degreased, lightly lubricated and problem was resolved.

In california if you were a fool and loaned your gun to another person and if she was caught. She would go to jail and then you would be in jail as well ! Plus you would lose all your guns california sucks . But you should never never loan anyone your guns ! She proved you to be a fool ! She had no idea how to care for a gun so is she safe HELL NO !

The point wasn't so much to "sell" anyone on either rifle. More to just let guys know what some of the differences are between high end rifles and low end rifles-But thanks I plan on keeping them...both. SAKO rifles all leave the factory with a 5rd 1 MOA guarantee or they don't leave. This is done with Sako ammo in an indoor/controlled environment.
Noone guarantees you can do 1" group with any shitty ammo...
Sako has a five shot moa or better guarantee if you use what they used to get it.

They guarantee that the rifle is capable of that. They don't guarantee you will get those results. Individual skill matters.
IDK i love my savage although a better trigger is all i need?I have 10rd mags for it for hunting all kind of live targets.Now a good trigger is all i need?Hope u have some suggestions on after market triggers on Axis 1's?
I bought a 10 dollar trigger upgrade on ebay. Works great, tip, you may only be able to use one shim, but they give you two.

Do I see that you had to grind off the front nub of the mounting rail of the Axis? I ask because I had to do that for a Leupold 2-7x33 and using Leupold Picatinny rail and PRW2 Low rings. I was sure the objective housing would clear but should have used medium.
What is the clearance like between the bolt and the scope on the Axis? My setup is close. I have to use a traditional palm/pull/push method to cycle the bolt. If I grab the bolt there's a chance I might jam between the bolt and scope.

cool, I have family around regina...was out there for 20 years, hunted rock creek nelson, caribou, bowen island for feb bow season, below hope above hope (haha) had a marine fab business in white rock
For the price the axis is a very good gun, I put a leupol scope and to carry in rough forest of northern Quebec it's perfect won't take a 2000 $ gun in those bush

Ok, first an Axis doesn't even come close to comparing to a Sako 85. We are talking about a BMW vs Kia. Will Kia get you from one place to another "yes". It all depends on what your after. If your deer hunting on a budget and hunting every once in a while a Axis, Remington ADL, or any other entry level gun will shoot well enough to kill a deer. Companies cant sell junk anymore that will not shoot accurately. How much money you want to spend will depend on the quality you want. Why do people buy more expensive cars or houses. Why buy a Zeiss scope? A bushell will work fine. Some people just want more quality than others. Im not knocking the Axis, its a fine entry level rifle but its not the same as a Sako. 5 years from now the Axis is probably worth $150 and the Sako will be damn near as much as you paid for it.

If you are judging on ACCURACY alone, not precision fit and finish - the Sako has absolutely nothing on the AXIS. As a range officer, I've seen many out-of-the-box AXIS out shoot and embarrass a lot of seriously expensive rifles on the bench. To say it will just shoot "well enough" to kill a deer couldn't be further than the truth. It will shoot anything at any distance the Sako will. Put the AXIS in a $150 Boyds walnut or laminate stock, pillar bed it - and have a very accurate hunting rifle for cheap. Heirloom? Nope, it was never intended to be a classic for handing down to the kids.

I personally think it is dumb to spend tons of money on something that is just as good but don't have the "NAME" to make it expensive!I out shoot my buddies with my savage axis 30/06 and they have better scopes and they payed way more and I still out shoot them,so I also think it depends on who is shooting it!!!!

Hey buddy, there is awesome value in used rifles. Many older made models were built to last with higher quality than newer more modern guns. I'd look for an old ruger m77, remington 700 or 722, savage model 10. You can sometimes get a deal on an old push feex winchester m70 or tikka as well. If you want to buy new I'd look for a sale on a combo rifle. Probably a ruger American. Good luck man. Dont forget to have fun!

Bought stevens 10 years ago for a foul weather gun, 200 bucs. Since then an axis for 250 bucs in 30-06 and 3 weeks ago a .223 axis ll. All 3 are tac drivers. Can't go wrong.
Get a 22 and learn how to shoot it safely and accurately. After that, consider a centerfire rifle.

Guns are hit and miss people are hit and miss ammo is hit and miss lots of variables I’ve spent a lot on guns and not a lot on guns the most accurate gun I have is a Remington SPS varmint 308 shoots 1/4 moa with Hornady American gunner ammo paid 277 new has a cheap scope vortex diamondback tactical I’m afraid to take anything off of it though it shoots to good

Hey Peter, Thanks for the comment. I don't claim that one is better than the other. I only relay my OWN PERSONAL experience in my videos. I have never had to warranty a Korean Bushnell, even the cheapo 90$ Banner model. However, I have warrantied a number of my Vortex scopes ranging from 350$ to 1300$ dollars-they were all made in the Philippines.

I work at a rifle range and I must say only from my experience I have looked through Bushnells Vortex Nikon and Burris. You can keep the Vortex but the other 3 were very clear and never heard anyone complain about needing repairs.
The Black X1000 rifle scopes are made in the Philippines. Vortex Vipers are made in Philippines
Diamondbacks are made in Philippines made as well.
You think your Korean scope is better than those?
Hi Jack. I cant say one is better than the other 100% of course. BUT I have had 2 Vipers, one just standard viper SFP, the second a HSLR in FFP 4-16x50, and one diamondback 2.5-10x50 SFP. All three of my vortex scopes had to be sent in for warranty at one point or another, the FFP HSLR had to be sent in twice. Whereas the cheap Korean Bushnells I have had have never gone in for warranty or caused me an issue. Just speaking out of my own experience.

I have a sako85 grey wolf in 300 win mag and I beat the hell out of it I hunt the fuck out of it nd the more dings and scratch’s I get the way better it gets! It’s mine I’ll never sell it and I use it! It’s just wood and metal! USE YOUR GUNS!!! Go out and hunt them to the max!!!!

Hey there! Depends on what type of hunting you do. For something plain Jane theres nothing wrong with the Korean made banners. Just double check the bottom of it to make sure it's a Korean made not Chinese. Their simplicity makes them reliable and durable.
Never mind the Korean or Chinese made stuff buy USA. And know your getting quality stuff it might cost a bit more bit you will save in the long run for sure buy it once not three or four times
Shane Rhodes I have had really good luck with my leupolds and nightforce. As Well, if your on a budget tho, Bushnell banner is a solid choice
All glass is now Asian, aside from the brand US Optics i believe. Look into it. Even Leupold has it listed on their site.

How do you rate the cz 550 to the guns you tested.
If you dont mind a heavier gun, the cz550 is almost an impossible value to beat. Old world quality, smooth, beautifully finished. In a true mauser style CRF action, it's a toss up for me between a ruger m77 and the 550 if you dont want to spend 5-10k on a mauser or rigby etc..
