Why this little jellybean is my 'Car of The Year' 2023 - Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2 - Beards n Cars

  • The Daihatsu Sirion isn't exactly synonymous with most people's idea of a performance car, but as any who know my taste in super obscure fast cars in the sphere of Gran Turismo will know - I legitimately love the Daihatsu Storia X4. A rally-ready monster which absolutely dominated the sub 1000 cc class in Japanese rally events. This incarnation is a 2003 Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, and although not quite as quick - or as rabid - as the X4, it is a shockingly impressive little machine, especially given how completely under the radar it looks, and how bottom of the bargain bin their used prices are.
Because underneath the old folks home exterior lies a 1.3 litre twin-cam driving the front wheels, and thanks to its 115 bhp output in an 850 kg frame it can absolutely decimate the likes of a Fiat Panda 100HP or Suzuki Swift Sport in the 0-60 rush, at 7.8 seconds. All the while delivering Japanese reliability, cheap parts prices, upwards of 50 mpg fuel economy with ease, and corners like its on fly paper. All of this combined with the absolute sleeper factor of being a Daihatsu and you've got yourself a performance cult classic in the making. So let's jump out on the road in my personal M100 generation facelift model Daihatsu Sirion Rally II to give my overall thoughts on this buzzing little package of fun!

I drive a Daihatsu Copen with the "Big-block" 1300cc, basically the regular, lower compression version of your Sirion's engine. I can tell you that the 1300cc out of the Rallye2/ Sirion Sport is an engine I'm planning to swap in my little car. I love my little roadster, but for track driving it lacks some power. I would eventually like to tune it to 120-130hp, a solid power but still gives me the "Drive a slow car fast" vibe.
As for fuel economy, my Copen does at its worst 27 mpg, that is literally track driving + commuting from the petrol station to the track. It will do over 50 on the highway.

I have a Rally 2 almost identical to this, 130k on the clock and going strong! Fantastic little car, have spent the past year doing autotest events with it. Great to see such an in depth review of a car this uncommon!

Absolutely, took it to the Haynes breakfast club this past Sunday and it was fun to see people surprised to hear how quick they actually are

Hi Mike! Spacious interiors in little Kei cars like your Daihatsu aren't that rare as you might think. One of my cousins had a 2000s Renault Twingo and despite being such a small car, its interior was quite big, enough for five people to fit inside without having to worry about being cramped at all. Merry Christmas!

My mum bought one new here in belgium. The chassis rusted away within 7 years and wasn't economical to repair. The airbag popped 2 times as we drove thru a pothole but i think that was just our car 😅

I don't think I've ever been called out more accurately by a TH-cam video intro in my life.

I replaced the rocker cover gasket and the points on the exhaust Kent cam are as sharp as triangles. For peak lift.

Most of these don't have a k.n air filter or the lowering springs or the uprated brakes they come with . I bought one and had to buy new lowering springs £99 / k&n air filter £50/ EBC brake discs and upgrade pads £115 . If you rev them out in second gear it will see 70mph at 7900rpm just as the rev limiter kicks in .. first second and third, it's fast but as sooner as u change in to fourth the power dies .. ps they don't like big hills.. but you do feels that Kent cam that's fitted to the exhaust valves and vvti push u like a turbo kicked in at 4000 rpm in second... It does give u a kick in the back especially for a 1300cc motor but the car feels tin like .

In Australia they're called a Sirion GTvi. I have the auto version, they have shift buttons on the steering wheel with a gear indicator in the centre of the dash. The auto must rev lower as it's great on the highway. I put larger stiffer 185 tyres on mine, it handles like a go-kart now.

Whoa.. you've been gushing about the Storia for a long time that it makes me really happy that you finally got one!
Have you actually tried a gen 1 Yaris T Sport released around the same year? Not as fast, unless you imported the turbo version, but I'm guessing the interior and overall riding comfort is much better?

    2019+21: German wins COTY
    2020: British COTY
    2022: American COTY
    2023: Japanese COTY
Slowly ranking up country diversity for winners. France, Italy, Sweden and South Korea remain (I'd be shocked if a Ferrari FF manages to make the shortlist and not get COTY)

Good cars but the ignis sport is a far better car, and paper stats are way out. Majority of ignis are actually 115-120bhp and 0-60 in about 7-8 seconds.
