    From my understanding, "RE7 was too scary" was a sentiment most often held by Japanese gamers. That's why they made those Japan only "Children's Puppet Show" inspired parody promos for Village.

    • @Hey-Its-Dingo
      @Hey-Its-Dingo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Also, a slight nitpick with RE Village's writing is with the Japanese dub of the game. I have to play the game in English, because the Japanese script feels weird. I am American, yeah, but it's telling when other languages have a uniform way of referring to Mother Miranda, every other language calls her "Mother Miranda" either in English or their language's word for "Mother," but the Japanese dub noticably flip-flops between calling her "Mother Miranda" with the seiyuu saying it in English, and the Japanese honorific "Miranda-Sama" seemingly at random. (Lady D uses both right after each other at one point in the phone call scene)

      Actually the puppet show was made to make fun of people who said that RE7 was too scary, by basically saying "Here, have a baby puppet show instead, is this better?" in Japanese, they even have disclaimer text at the bottom saying "Capcom is not responsible for how scary players actually find Village"

      I played all the old RE games and loved them. Horror has maybe always been my favorite genre of movies and games. So, imagine my surprise when I played RE7! I was pretty fresh off an 8-year hiatus from the gaming scene, something I believe explains my absolute inability to keep playing it. I got to where Mr. Baker is stalking Ethan through the house when I ran down some stairs and hid like a total pussy, and it was there I realized how tense I was. I was so on-edge that I wasn't able to enjoy the game! I was in disbelief. This was around a year ago, but I still have it on my HD because you better believe I'm going to beat that goddamn game at some point!
      Apparently, I was just one of many who were put into a state of bitch paralysis by the game. That said, I do wish Capcom wouldn't let that influence the direction they take the series in. Those of us who haven't yet beat the game still bought it, and I doubt I'm the only one with plans on overcoming it at some point. Without that intense scare factor it wouldn't stick out in my mind as an obstacle, and overcoming it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding.

      Lady D is your good old Mr. X/Nemesis goose chase.
      Beneviento is the new, more psychological take on horror (stuff like Silent Hill).
      Moreau is your body horror (but I think Heisenberg also counts on this one)
      And finally Heisenberg (that keeps compared to Dante lol) is your good old RE4.

    • @smergthedargon8974

      Honestly? Keep 'em all!
      ...just don't do 'em all at once! Do one or two of 'em per game. My biggest problem with Village, while I still quite like it, is that it has a bit of design ADHD. The second it starts developing a scenario it moves onto something else, whereas other well-regarded horror games are usually a bit more focused. The castle and RE7 are classic "stuck in a place with a deadly person" horror, Moreau is Dead Space body horror, Beneviento is shockingly scary well-executed Silent Hill-style psychological + body horror, and Heisenberg is amazing RE4/5 action-horror schlock. It's trying too much much to be all of these, while RE2make, Silent Hill, Dead Space, and RE4/5 have proven you can do just one and still have an amazing game.
      It might be a bit of a joke phrase but I kinda believe a Resi "cinematic universe" might be the best solution - get two or three dev teams, give them each one of these to focus on and make out of in the Resi setting. Give the people who like the tension of RE7 the horror they want, give the people who like 4/5-style action schlock what they want, and hell, make some weird immersive sim, who knows!

    Resident Evil Village is based on Transylvania with old fairy tales combined into the mix and its set in Romania. Not just because I know about it but its because I was born there and it looks perfectly identical. Its kind of heart warming how a popular gaming genre has one game that has to represent the country of where I had lived before. I might not be the biggest fan of Resident Evil but I still respect the genre even if Capcom was going in other ways to make horror action in the franchise a more suitable way for the community to enjoy a different taste of new and old. Its still amazing how Resident Evil games got back from the horror we missed and loved with a touch of new and bright coming along the way. I hope that the franchise will stay on its routes as always.

    Going to disagree with your assessment of RE's place in the industry. RE has 3 things the horror games it inspires generally don't.
    Polish
    Budget
    Content
    There aren't any AAA horror games vying for its crown at the moment. And as good as dev tools have gotten there isn't any indie horror game that compares to RE in presentation or gameplay. One of the massive downfalls of indie horror (for me personally) is the pervasiveness of the runaway or you die game. Things like challenge runs and replayability is still something RE is king of in the horror space.
    Now if Capcom loses their way again I agree it will difficult seeing RE go down that dark path again. But questioning it's place in the industry as it stands or assuming it continues putting out quality titles? Afraid I can't jump on that ship captain.
    Great video Liam and I look forward to your next one.

    The boat section in RE7 is complicated for me, on it's own? Pretty good, but in sequential play? Dreadful, it kills the entire momentum for me, and it feels almost like a new campaign, like, the B side to a non-existing Mia campaign, it feels like it belongs with the other two campaign DLCs for me, but it is good ON IT'S OWN for me, and I say that cause I stopped playing at the very beginning of the boat, and loaded the game after RE8 was showed and played it basically on its own, for the first time in a while.
    Also I super don't get why some people complain about the more action-y ending to REs, where you have a ton of guns and ammo that you saved up, for me that's what RE is all about, after all that carefulness of saving your resources, you get to the ending where your main weapon is now the Shotgun, now you're Ash Williams, loaded up, the horrors don't scare you anymore, you know how to kill, so you kill until that sometimes metaphorical rocket launcher. All of that to say, the mines are fine, the environment sucks tho.

    • @Mendrawza24
      @Mendrawza24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Heck, Mikami himself said that the ends are geared towards action as a reward to the player for making it past the horrors. You get the most powerful weapons, and its like a catharsis as you overcome your fears and destroy them. Even action heavy RE4 has this to some extent. That final room before the Lord Saddler fight, where there's a familiar panting and gasping with exactly one more Regenerator wasn't even scary anymore, it was just an "outta my way loser," moment.

    • @soulpath1
      @soulpath1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Mendrawza24 Good point. That's why RE4 is such a masterpiece. There's a constant upping of the ante in it's set-pieces and minimal boring ass backtracking just to get items to progress. I get that puzzle solving part is part of die-hard classic old re1/2 fans and I do love the RE1 remake and RE2 remake but only for the atmosphere and vibe. The tedious item searching running across maps through confusing areas constantly looking at the map just takes me out of the atmosphere and fun. Honestly there's a reason RE4 is the best selling and one of the most iconic and influential games of all time. And one reason is doing away with all that tedious backtracking which is basically just doing nothing and boring.

    Village felt like Diet RE4. Shorter, very similar beats, less time with villains, smaller scope. I liked it, but there was an emptiness to it.
    You didn't really get much from Miranda, but that may be by design. Both her and Ethan are parents who love their children who would do anything for them. Ethan is a hero who will fight abominations all on his own to get Rose back. Miranda is driven mad by Eva's death to the Spanish Flu and will use not only some super bioweapon-tier fungus to bring her back, but will inflict the same pain she feels on another parent by sacrificing their child to get Eva back. This is a great aspect, but all of Miranda's lore is in the last room of the game. And I don't much care at all for Ozwell Spencer getting inspired by the emblem of the lords in the village cave.
    I liked it a lot more than RE7. It had more character and enemy variety to keep me playing. And I like the direction, just with more. But I'm concerned after the severe misstep of RE3make. RE2make was amazing, even if story beats make no sense in continuity, like both characters seeing Annette die and see Birkin mutate from one form to another. RE3make chat out large parts of the original and relegated them to cutscenes (intro up to meeting Carlos, for example). The game was short, had no postgame or replayability, and was just a naked cash-in on Capcom's part, riding high on RE2make's acclaim.
    I hope whatever comes next is good. But after RE3make, I'm incredibly wary of their releases. Don't just plop out half a game at full price for a quick buck if you want people to keep coming back.

    So I think with horror franchises there's this really difficult balance when it comes to sequels, where (IMO) if you have a main character return to the spotlight they can't be as fresh-faced, terrified and frankly incapable of dealing with the situation as they were when they had their first horrific experience. At some point it makes sense that the character will at least to some extent know how to deal with the situation better. This is why slowly shifting to action comes so natural to these franchises, I think, and why they had to introduce a new main character to soft reboot the series to go back to it's survival horror roots. In all likelyhood we'll see Rose star in the next game (that's my hope at least). This brings two ways they can go about it: One: She's deliberately shielded from the horrors of the world and gets scarred along with us in her first game, making for a more intimate horror experience or two: she's trained to deal with these situations from a young age... so on some level they can't catch her by surprise too much anymore. I do hope they'll go for the first.

      VR games should be its own separate thing. I don't like how devs are making games meant to be for VR and console together. Console games especially nowadays have an integrated cinematic-movie aspect to it, which can't be done in VR which is just a set camera angle perspective of the player at all times, never showing the body language or facial expression of the main character. VR and console should be separate categories.

    The question of whether or not Lucas would have ended up the way he is if Eveline hadn’t entered his life isn’t really that ambiguous. The answer is in the game itself. The mysterious group that created Eveline wanted someone on the inside once they realized they had lost control of their creation in the swamps of Louisiana, so they approached Lucas and gave him a cure that freed him from Eveline’s influence and while allowing him to retain the powers of the mold. He spied on Eveline and his family for them while fooling Eveline into thinking he was still under her control. This means that all those sick, unsolvable puzzles he created for his victims were created by him without any influence from Eveline. The mysterious group even made him their top researcher on the project. In the DLC, you can find a note by a researcher complaining about how he has to work for a “lunatic” who doesn’t care about the project and just uses it as an excuse to get test subjects to fight and kill each other and cut people up in pointless autopsies. The researcher stated that he would report Lucas’s behavior at the next meeting with HQ, but it is implied that Lucas killed him and the other researchers by feeding them to the mold monsters and making it look like an accident. He was in the process of selling his data to a third party when Chris killed him. Even without the DLC, the game strongly hints that Lucas is different from the other bakers. Rather than attack with freaky powers, he creates elaborate booby traps like IEDs and plays games with Ethan. He shows little interest in sharing Eveline’s gift, being more interested in torturing his victims until he gets bored and kills them. It’s pretty clear Lucas was a psycho without Eveline having to twist his mind.

RE8 was like a theme park action/horror thrill ride in the vein of RE8 incorporating some of the looping design aspects of the originals and 7 as well as offering optional exploration and paths that contribute the games economy in a way I think worked really well and was satisfying and enjoyable. 8 isn’t perfect, the bosses were a huge step down from 7, the game can be a bit too heavy with cinematic in the beginning and the sloppy narrative but for me it was a great game. Remake is just the more popular term and it’s purpose is only to distinguish it from the original. Remake inherently means reimagining IMO since we already have the term remaster to refer to games only getting visual/quality of life improvements.

    A common complaint against RE7 in Japan was that it's "too scary", that's why RE8 has practically zero horror in it. The castle is just paying lip service to the old resident evil formula on a severely limited scale.
    House Benevento is the developers saying "oh, you wanted a scary game? Here's 5 minutes of the game being scary, now go shoot some werewolves."

Its 2 almost different games with some similar locations, but there are plenty of differences, puzzles are different, many locations are different, dialogs are different etc etc You cannot skip the original RE if you play RE Remake. I will say more: you'd better not to play RE Remake at all, if you didnt play the original - you will miss a lot, believe me. And its not enough to play only 1 scenario of RE. RE2 wasnt the first game to introduce different scenarios - the first RE has 2 completely different scenarios - with different locations, puzzles and even bosses. So if youve completed the Jill scenario, do yourself a favor and start playing the Chris scenario - its almost a totally different game

    I don't like how this series is inevitably dragged towards action-schlock formula. I'd like to see RE expand on non-linear exploration, item management and puzzle solving, all this mixed with combat encounters. Original RE formula died when free aiming got introduced. Tension in RE was never coming from aiming skills. Combat was about deciding either maneuver around enemies or spend your resources to deal with them. It was only about positioning yourself safely, rising your gun and firing. It was a tactical decision, not a test of skill.

    i just hate the writing from that point on, the machine that magically is made of a metal heisenberg cant control, ethan being entirely made of mold, miranda being the old lady (makes 0 sense), the lore dump at miranda's lab...
    the game was great and i agree with Liam, there must have been a development shift at some point that comprimised the game..
    i read online that in the original concept there was supposed to be flashbacks showing the village in the past and how everything started.

      The writing from the very start is pretty shit, but apart from that, my only problem with the game is Heisenberg's boss fight and the beginning. I don't mind him being a big jelly metal monster if he had downsides. My idea would be the more he uses electricity, the more deteriorated he becomes, so we would start fighting him as a human, but as we deal damage and he uses more electricity, he becomes more and more like his game's mutant form. And about the beginning, I think you should meat with the old guy in the first cabin, kill some Lycans to get introduced to the game's mechanics and all.
      There is much more I would change, like not killing the villagers in a silly way, Chris behaviors, Miranda's importance and much more, could easily made the game 20+ hours. But unfortunately there is nothing we can do, I just hope Capcom stop being lazy and take more time to develop their games

    If the people who made this game had worked on it better, they would know this game isn't just about viruses and parasites. It's a story of evolution, change, growth and the pain of these proccesses. For example. The Mold was nothing but an idea. It then gave birth to a body, Miranda. Miranda then gave origin to the mind willing to use the idea of the mold, Spencer. Spencer then created a hive of minds willing to keep working on the idea the mold represents, Umbrella. And finally, Umbrella created the perfect being with both the body to carry the effects of the idea represented by the mold, and the mind to reproduce and replicate the evolution thrust upon him, Wesker. If they had properly worked on the saga, Wesker and his imperfect sister (who managed to bend the rules of evolution so that she wouldn't be left behind by Albert), Alex, would have truly been the final villains of the saga. Not only that, but some of the Bio-Weapons we've seen so far such as Eveline, Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters, Heisenberg, etc., would have remained alive, and start creating the way to ensure that they would be accepted by the world and allow the evolution thrust upon them to be properly and fairly spread around the world. With the difference being that this evolution would be slow and only those who wanted to go throught with it receive it. Because they would be the perfect form in the evolutionary pool of the Bio-Weapons, for these held the humanity the previous Bio-Weapons lacked.
    I think this is the direction they should have taken with the saga, because evolution is a slow and painful proccess, but is going to come eventually. The Bio-Weapons are the proof, and instead of destroying them, the good guys should understand that they need to embrace those creatures as part of the world, but instead of controling them like the bad guys, they should seek to help the creatures be part of the world.

      @@Spantzcatdog I think it would be possible for my ideas to have come true. But you point a good problem. The lack of limits. They're just interested in prolonging this saga to profit from it, instead of telling a good story with a complex perspective. Greed and lack of interest in seeking an original concept, like the one I wrote in my comment, are destroying this saga.

    You forgot to mention the part where RE:0 flopped so hard that Mikami decided to switch gears, didn't happen out of no where. Or the fact that Mikami hated fixed camera as he saw it as a hardware limitation first and foremost. I get really annoyed when people blame RE4 for the decline of the series considering it literally saved the franchise. RE3 and Dino Crisis 2 were both action games, didn't start with RE4, and implying otherwise is incredibly disingenuous. The reality is, as time goes on game design evolves as well as design trends. I love the fixed camera angle games, and for the most part I liked your video but I'm so sick of people revising history to blame RE4 for "the death of horror". Chasing industry trends and Capcom trying to hit Call of Duty sales numbers is what killed the horror genre, not one game made by the series creator. As for your worries for the series' future? I'd say they're justified somewhat considering what happened in the past. Personally, I'm not too worried especially considering Capcom has seemingly acknowledged the mistakes they made with RE3make for example. Capcom is riding high right now and I foresee them trying their damnedest to keep doing so. They're constantly listening to community feedback not just for RE but all their major franchises. Maybe I'm optimistic but I foresee us coming up on Capcom's second renaissance since the PS2-era. Sorry for the essay no one will probably read, and sorry if I came off really aggressive. Liked the video, like your other videos. ;-)

    Me and my best friend got RE 6, a giant bong, and a huge bag of the devils lettuce all around the same time; and after that we spent weeks playing that game. We got so stoned throughout the play through that we didn't figure out how the healing button worked until just before our last chapter. We still love RE 6 in spite of the bad rap it gets

    7:56 I'd like to add some extra perspective I don't think many talk about these days. (Long post alert, TL;DR at bottom.)
    It wasn't just Mikami feeling that the format was holding his team down, although that did play a part (the fixed camera angles and some other staples of the gameplay came due to hardware limitations at the time). There was also a stigma about the tank controls at the time. People who weren't fans of the series generally didn't like the tank controls and dismissed the games, and some reviewers even knocked their score of the game down due to the controls. Though the games generally received high scores, the stigma of tank controls kept many people away, and RE was seen as a sort of cult classic at the time. As the industry evolved and gamers got used to modern (at the time) control schemes, and with declining sales on subsequent releases of RE, Capcom needed to basically "get with the times" to appeal to a wider audience that wasn't going to buy a horror game with tank controls. So they made a huge shift with RE4, and it paid off. Its possibly the only game resold more times than Skyrim. I remember one interview with someone that was part of the original RE1 staff, that claimed that they originally wanted an over-the-shoulder camera system, but again, hardware limitations at the time prevented them from implementing it while still maintaining a scary atmosphere (Silent Hill fixed the problem by using a fog). Hence, fixed-camera, tank controls. So, RE4 was the original vision, apparently... for some on the team.
    There was some internal struggles in development on whether to make it pure survival-horror, or action-horror. I could be wrong, but Shinji Mikami leaned more on the idea of action-horror, if I remember correctly. He wanted the game to be rewarding to the player for sticking it out through all the difficulties and horror, which is why RE games generally end with you being armed to the teeth with lots of ammo to take down they typical zombies on your path to the final boss. I believe others on the team really wanted to focus on the survival horror, so the compromise was met with the really stressful, horrifying stuff at the beginning, with the shift to action later. RE4, by comparison, gives you an action-packed adrenaline rush from start to finish, with a few scary segments in between. The opening village sequence, though stressful, is more or less a shooting gallery with all the health and ammo drops you get from enemies. It's almost like an arcade shooter at that point. Dr. Salvador, the chainsaw-man was terrifying, but when you get the shotgun, you feel like you got something to take him down, and he's not as scary. That leads into your point about some staff members feeling sad about the shift.
    TL;DR: Tank controls kept ppl from buying RE games in the early 00s, Mikami changed almost everything to make RE4, and he probably wanted the series to be more action-horror in the first place.
