In 1993, Doom became one of the world's first immersive video games, and we can attribute a lot of that to Bobby Prince's score. Today, Mick Gordon has adapted the diversity of Doom's soundtrack in a slew of unorthodox and incredible ways. This video explores how Mick was able to do this, what it adds to both games, and why his compositions were so important.

The end of this video is severely outdated, and Mick deserved far better. Read Mick Gordon's full statement on the Doom Eternal OST release here: medium.com/@mickgordon/my-full-statement-regarding-doom-eternal-5f98266b27ce
I took Marty's words at face value. I apologize for making this case seem so cut and dry in the video. I wish Mick all the best, love his work just as all of you do. I didn't know about the Marty post until just now, and honestly I'm surprised so many people bought it at face-value. I'ver been following Mick's career since Killer Instinct; guy's really cool from all the interviews I've ever seen. He takes pride in his work that gets published so I'm surprised there weren't more suspicions when the OST dropped and it wasn't up to par.

Everyone knows that playing Doom music increases your FOV, gives you a 50% reaction time buff and an 80% strength buff.
Along with that fact, as demonstrated by "Baby Driver chase scene but with Deja Vu", playing Deja Vu while driving gives you a 50% reaction time buff.

The only reason I expected Doom Eternal to have a good story was because *Doom 2016 had a really good story.*
Not just the lore, but the interplay between Samuel and Olivia, Samuel and the Slayer ("Carefully release the hinges!"), the Hell testaments of the Slayer's previous conquests, even Vega had some time to shine in the penultimate level.
Doom 2016 absolutely had a story. It was just really good at decieving you it didn't by having the Slayer not trust anyone and disobey their orders. Everyone remembers getting locked in Samuel's office while he talks to you, right?
Eternal has a lot of plot disappointments. It's not even that it needed to add more, it just needed to do anything else with what it had. The 3 Hell Priests are all the same sniveling villain archetype, the Betrayer and King Novik appear in literally one scene each in the present and then never again (very sparingly in the codexes), and not only is the ending of 2016 not given any closure, but Samuel Hayden is mystery-retconned in ways that make him ironically less cool.
You have to try REALLY hard to make *Doctor Samuel Hayden* less cool.
The Khan Maykr is interesting enough though. The Maykrs' lore is pretty interesting in general.
Addendum: I said a bit more than I anticipated, lol.

All the elements in the soundtrack have existed to various degrees throughout Industrial, EDM, and Metal for at least a decade, and there are quite a few bands and projects out there with a similar sound... not to mention basically a whole multiverse (compared to the variety in mainstream pop) of independent and underground musicians most people never get any exposure to.

In the first chord, of the first song, when the synths first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of metal, his fingers blistered by the fires of Hell and practiced to ascension, he chose the path of perpetual rock. In his ravenous playing he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Chords seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the guitar of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his songs named him... the Doom Player.

@@lunastar2235 Metal is technically a form of Rock music, though it has branched away enough that it's considered its own style and has many sub-genre styles throughout, much like Rock does. A lot of people think "Classic" Rock is a genre, but really it can cover a vast scope of different kinds of Rock from over many decades, and many styles overlap like Album Rock and Psychedelic Rock that started in the late 60s. Bands like "Pink Floyd", "Led Zeppelin", and "Grateful Dead" all play Rock music, though their styles often vary from album to album (which is not unusual for bands with long careers). Technically, Rock gets blurry, as Country is sort of a hybrid of Folk and Rock, and Pop is an offshoot of Rock that has morphed into its own thing, and is basically mostly vocal-heavy, electronic Dicso/House these days (and is essentially a commercially industrial product of Big Media).
If you want to hear a band that epitomizes Rock, but defies convention, check out "Sonic Youth"
Basically Metal is heavier and harder than Rock, that's why it's called Heavy Metal. Metal is often brutal or even Satanic, but it doesn't have to be, sometimes it's just about fantasy, like Lord of the Rings. Rock can be hard, that's why there's Hard Rock, but there is also Soft Rock. There is Southern Rock, and there is Southern Metal, but the closest thing to "soft" Metal would possibly be Power Metal, which is kind of like the 'Pop' of Metal, lots of ballads and stuff. There is also Ambient Metal/Stoner Metal which are also referred to as Doom (no relation to the game, technically in conveys the mood of the sound), and they all tend to drone and chug, but sometimes will build up to a crescendo, much like Post-Metal. There is also Post-Rock which does a similar thing, basically it rolls before it rocks, with classical song structures and often orchestral instruments.
I couldn't recommend a band that epitomizes Metal, but I suppose most Metalheads would point to "Iron Maiden", early "Metallica", or even "Slayer", and probably "Judas Priest" as like the 'first' Metal band I guess, but people argue about that sometimes like it matters a whole lot.
Random assortment of example bands just from my immediate memory, can post links if you want:
Post-Rock- "Godspeed You Black Emperor!", "Explosions in the Sky", "Do Make Say Think", "Mogwai", "Sigur Ros"
Power Metal- "Manowar" (classic power metal), "Dragonforce" (faster, poppy power metal), "3 Inches of Blood" (more savage power metal)
Progressive Death Metal- "Opeth" (lots of analogue/classical instrumentation, long-form songs), "Fallujah" (lots of ambience, synths, and female vocalization)
Tech Death (Technical Death Metal)- "Vale of Pnath", "Irreversible Mechanism", "The Zenith Passage" (all of these bands hit hard, fast, brutally, and with excellent technical proficiency)
Despite what Liam seems to believe and is conveying in this video, there are quite a few Metal and/or Industrial bands out there that have achieved a very similar sound to that found in the latest Doom games, years ago. The up-beat up segment of Cultist Base is assuredly the most mosh-worthy piece of video game music ever made. Idk wether to “hardcore dance” like back in 2006 or punch and kick things. Or both.

I’ve been saying for as long as I’ve played Doom, give or take fifteen years, that it’s my favorite rhythm game. In a way, Mick Gordon’s score is an encapsulation of that sentiment. Great video.

Both Doom and Mick Gordon somehow have the insane ability to make it to where anyone who listens to their music become a fan of Metal even if they never were prior to touching the games or their music. I wasn't a Metalhead in the slightest prior to playing Doom 2016 and Eternal, and while I still don't listen to Metal music a ton (The closest I get is with hard rock or music with small hints of Metal) both 2016 and Eternal's soundtracks have entered my regular playlist. I think that's part of what makes Mick, Levy, and Hulshult such incredible composers in how they can compose music that even people who aren't regular fans of the genre love! Not to mention their creativity with how they compose their music, Mick can turn a Home Depot into a fucking orchestra! Like what other composer will listen to a Lawnmower and be like "Ah yes, this will go perfectly with my metal music track". The man has my upmost respect, and while it's still sad that he and Id parted ways on such sour terms and I hope they can eventually rebuild that bridge, I think the music of Doom is in good hands with both David Levy and Andrew Hulshult at the helm now. It's composers like Mick and Andrew and their work that makes me love Video Game Music so fucking much!
Also I know its probably been pointed out a ton since this video came out but that whistle in the main theme for Doom Eternal is the same whistle used in the Icon of Sin boss fight from Doom II

The video essay format is becoming overly prevalent on youtube these days, but this video is literally so well done and insightful, that I watched the whole 45 minutes without even checking once how much time was left in the video. As a musician, and gamer who absolutely loved Doom Eternal, this video taught me so much about the music of the franchise's past and showed what Mick Gordon brought to the table with the reboots. An absolutely phenomenal job with this sir! Not a minute was wasted with this (and there were a lot of those minutes!). Definitely look forward to more of your work.
