Opened on the 14th of February 2003, The Oceanographic of the City of Arts and Sciences is the largest marine complex in Europe. It is shown to the world as a unique space in the form of a journey through the seas and oceans of our planet to show visitors its most outstanding marine ecosystems.
Its avant-garde architecture, the arrangement of the various aquariums, and its scientific, leisure, and educational vocation make the marine world more accessible to visitors and make them aware of the need to protect its fauna and flora.
Each building is identified with the following aquatic environments: the Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, the Antarctic, the Arctic, Islands, and the Red Sea, as well as the Dolphinarium.
The Oceanographic Museum hosts a large number of activities and experiences, both for professionals: university courses on the management and maintenance of turtles, sharks, birds or jellyfish and for the general public; from Sleeping with sharks, Backstage tour or the Sea in your hands, with the aim of knowing and learning first-hand about marine biodiversity.
• MEDITERRANEAN
The Mediterranean is located on a stretch of temperate seas. It is located between continents and its only connections with other bodies of water are the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Mediterranean barracuda is characterised by the vertical bands that cover its back along its whole body.
• OCEANS
The world’s oceans are large extensions of water which, despite containing few nutrients, are inhabited by animals capable of travelling thousands of kilometres to find food or mate. In open waters, only animals adapted to such hard conditions can survive. This aquarium consists of two underwater towers, connected by a 35-metre-long tunnel, containing a unique underwater space inside the same tank. It is one of the largest aquariums in the world, with 6,000m³ of water.
• ARCTIC
Welcome to Arctic. A giant igloo, twelve metres tall, divided into two levels, represents this ecosystem in which the beluga whale family is found.
*Beluga whales are marine mammals from the odontoceti group; cetaceans with teeth. They are characterised by the white colour of their skin, which allows them to camouflage themselves among the blocks of ice.
• ANTARCTIC
Unlike the Arctic, the Antarctic or South Pole is a continent covered with ice and surrounded by water on all sides. It is located at the southern extreme of the planet and is circumscribed by the Antarctic circle.
Gentoo penguins are easily recognised by the white patch on the upper section of their head, behind their eyes. Their bill and feet are orange in colour.
• DOLPHINARIUM
Oceanogràfic has the largest dolphinarium in Europe, where you can visit educational exhibitions on a group of bottlenose dolphins.
With a grandstand with a capacity for over 1,500 people, the dolphinarium is made up of a main pool with the best conditions for the study and observation of the dolphins. It also has four auxiliary pools for specific purposes such as training, reproduction and medical care.
