great presentation astounding we even are looking at anything close to the origional colour of many images, if we take into account colour-temperature of people's monitors, color profiles in GIMP/Photshop, and if the image is for print or the web - simple white balance - no such thing really - but a good place to start with an image perhaps
A better way to find the grey point would be to add another layer and fill in 50% grey, then set the blend mode to difference. Now find the grey point by sliding the curve to full white and bring it back down to where the first black spots come up. That's where your best grey areas are for the grey color picker.
