I Just got Scrap Mechanic and I've been watching your survival campaign as well as Lathrix's and wow i'm so glad you just did this. As a mechanical engineer some of the things are kinda second nature but wow some things are just absurd lol.
I totally agree, some things just go against all logic, it's really confusing.

A handy tip that's kind of against your mantra, Moonbo, but one that's actually saved me more than once. Put a full 10 diesel or battery directly into the engine on top of connecting fuel tanks to them. The reason being is that you can physically see the fuel being drained from the tanks (the measure bar on the side) and once that's gone, your creation stops. . . unless you have fuel in the engine directly. Then you have a small amount left over. I've surprised myself and wondered if it was a glitch to run on fumes, but no it was fuel in the engine and it's been a life saver.
Another tip that's actually changed recently, the vacuum pump is a very versatile tool. They've patched this and it's saddened me (but it's for the better), but the vacuum used to yeet out anything from it at super speed. Meaning you USED to be able to rig it up as a "poor mechanic's" mounted spud gun early on. You could also yeet water across the map. They've reduced the exiting speed of the vacuum pump, but that has actually made and interesting bit.
For those of you who have mass produced the glass tubes, you can use vacuum pumps in the same capacity as water cannons. They perform about the same. Meaning you could theoretically have a pump at the end of 1 tube on a controlled bearing sucking in water and another on the other end of the chest or water tank to fire out that water and have 2 versatile vacuums instead of 1 water cannon. The only con of it is that the water cannon isn't bound to the tank/chest via tubes. So if you have the tubes, go ahead and experiment with some crazy designs. If you don't, the water cannon would be a better choice instead of investing in glass tubes (less resources at the end of it all). Just some small things to consider that were not covered in this great video.
Thanks for the info for new players! Im thinking about getting this since they got the survival mode with it! The game has always reminded me of the BanjoKazooie nuts and bolts game, which my bro and I had a ton of fun making machines. This has that but on steroids haha

That's a new TH-cam feature
Some extra tips: if you're trying to build under where the lift holds your creation, build a long temporary piece on your creation. This will change the center of your creation so that the lift changes where it holds your creation. Note that controllers have a loop button at bottom left to repeat the sequence. If you want less than 15 degree increments, hold shift while you drag. Great tutorial, Moonbo!

...and glass - You can also break glass with a hammer &/or gun.
I also noticed something by accident one day. It 'could' be useful? ... While wielding a bucket, you can remove water directly from a container.
So.. this means that I could possibly throw water at bots as a defence and quickly fill up the bucket using water container? Not sure about how effective that is going to be, but still pretty interesting.

I have been waiting and searching and looking for something like this!! I've really been wanting to experiment with the controllers and logic gates but couldn't figure them out for the life of me ): And even if your logic gate explanation was only "simple" it was more than good enough for someone like me who has no idea what the hell they're supposed to be looking at and working with!

More nice work Moonbo. One quick thing that you missed is that along with the ones you already listed, pretty much any block with a durability of one can be destroyed with the hammer. This includes the basic glass, sand and some plants I know of for sure.
It's a good video to anyone who is just starting SM, will give a nice basic knowledge.

re: the pistons and bearings arriving at the destination at the same time with different speeds, as someone that's been a cnc machinist for 30 years I call that "Inverse Time".

You can also break tier one glass with the hammer, as well as cardboard and bubblewrap. Not sure with the spud gun, as I've not tested it yet.
I'm surely the hundredth dude to say this, but glass blocks and glass tiles can also be broken with the hammer. Nice video by the way!
You also need to put a switch on the vacuum pump for the water container. Idk why but it took me forever to figure that out lol. (I’m completely new to scrap mech tho).

Now you know the metal walls on the scrap shacks, you are able to break them with the hammer as well as other stuff too like the bags of dirt
It is SO true! I had a haybot knock me off my car then as I was ragdolling down the hill, he destroyed the driver's seat. The car then took off by itself until it drove off a cliff.
heres a tip, anything with 1 durability is destructable with spuds and hammer and anything with a durability 6 or above is indestructible from explosives, hammer, and spudguns

There is one more Logic function that you should cover. NOT gates. While they are not here you can use the NOR and a single input to create the same effect. This will give you the full range of Logic Gates. Also, A fun little book to help with logic function would be Digital Electronics DeMystified by Myke Predko.

tip, to this day, may 9 2021, you can stand ontop of either an unrefined metal or any other unrefined object hit it with a hammer, and it will move but you will ride on it too as if glued to it.
the timer shows the fuel level when connected to the fuel tank?

Considering a TH-camr did kill a farmbot with his hammer... it spawned at his beginner mechanic shop so... yes you can kill the big red guy with a hammer it's not recommended tho
Please help me! I can't weld 2 sets of blocks both connected to seperate pistons (I want to make them "work together"). The pistons are placed on a building on the ground (can't place it on a lift).
You're going to have to cut out the floor the pistons are on and put that on the lift. It's really convoluted in a way, but that's how it'll have to be done. I had to cut out part of a wall in a house to get 2 bearings to work together.
Make sure when you cut out the floor, you replace the block, but also do yourself a favor ahead of time and paint a line across where you're going to break the floor and make sure it's in a reasonably easy accessible spot. The paint is so you can line up the floor piece to your floor and the access is so you can actually weld it back where you need it to be. (I made the mistake a few times of cutting out the minimum amount of wall out and I couldn't get the piece in right because I couldn't actually see the face of the block I needed to weld onto.)

I wish you made this when survival came out. I was one of the many who bought the game then and some of this stuff was not easy to figure out. It's a great tutorial though.
One thing i still have a problem with is welding two or more pistons to a base with both pistons connected to the same plank of wood. They wont connect and it is all floppy. Anyone know what i am doing wrong? I thought putting the plank on a lift would work but it don't because only 1 piston gets welded that way. On a vehicle putting it on the lift works but i don't want to lift my base...
I would have made it sooner if I had all of these parts available to me in survival! As for your question, the best thing you can do is remove the least amount as possible to separate your pistons from your build, connect your weld points and fuse them, then weld the whole thing in the removed section.

As a main block I used barrier block.
The reason is the buoyancy 7. Barrier block is the only block with buoyancy 7, and minimal buoyancy to stay on surface is 6 so it's an good option.
Build everything underwater, that way you can see every change in balance. I've made one mistake during the building process.
Thruster has extremely high weight, and I put a bunch of wood 3 blocks (highest buoyancy block) around it.
Then I upgraded thruster to lvl 5, and the whole submarine turned upside down because thruster weight turned from 9 to 2, so before trying to balance everything, upgrade the thruster to the lvl you want (maybe seat will also loose weight on higher levels).
I put the gas container on the bottom, thruster on the back, seat in the middle, windshield and headlight on the front (not that important of course).
But there's no use for submarine.
1. If you need to go gather oil and glue, it's not that efficient to cross such a small distances on submarine.
2. You still can't breathe underwater.
I expect Axolot to add some submarine seats, that, lets say can't be connected to engines, but allow you to breathe inside a vehicle.
3. Waste of gas.
In the end, useless vehicle, but I *hope* useful experience.
Maybe you will need it later, so you can try if you want.
If you want something more useful for now, then try to build a boat, it's much easier.
