    Something Ive done thats worked for my slower hoyas is if I notice they are stagnant for too long I cut them. I did this with my Kerri and my Caudata Sumatra, both of them developed 5-7 new growth points shortly after.

    • @kadinaator

      If it's the typical one leaf kerrii sold around Valentine's day then it probably doesn't have a growth node at the bottom - and that means it won't grow any more leaves.

    I was told from a worker at a local plant store here that hoyas don’t need extra humidity so there’s no point in putting them in a cabinet. While at the time I thought there’s no harm in putting them in a cabinet because they’d probably grow faster, I’ve since moved all my hoyas out of the cabinet into my house (near the window or under grow lights) and they are doing really well. Lots of new growth and even some peduncles!

    • @katyaleblanc5418
      @katyaleblanc5418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some hoyas definitely do better with extra humidity. Carnosas don't need it, but many of the species I have need it and grow much better in my cabinet than regular household conditions.

  • @Winstonsmom

    Just thinking out loud, but hoyas leaves are so substantial and tough that it makes sense they would grow slowly. The flip side of this is that because they are tough, the leaves aren’t fragile. I’ve also found that they start slow and speed up after a year or 2. Not for people who need immediate gratification I guess. My oldest Hoya I got from a cutting 15 years ago from work. It’s really lovely, not too fussy, and it’s had two “kids” lol. I’m not sure of the variety, but I think it’s a Hoya carnosa splash at my best guess. The flowers are pretty though infrequent and they are very stinky… like urine… I got a Hoya Krimson queen 2 years ago as a very small plant and it’s just starting to grow now. I almost gave up on it. I also recently got a sunrise and it’s not doing anything. So pretty though. I’ll be patient.

    Hi Fern! So, two years ago, at a local nursery, I had picked out a few small plant babies. One was a Hoya carnosa, just the plain kind. I was at the checkout counter, and the woman told me, oh, let me show you a better one! And pointed to the Compacta cuttings. I had seen them, loved them... She pointed out they were better because they grew so slowly. Well, I would like to bop her in the head for that! It has had such slow growth, plus the wind knocked it down from it spot on the sill... Had to repot. It tried to die on me ... I took a single node cutting from the tiny cutting, rooted it in water. That lived, the rest died. 😂 In the meantime, I had ordered a jrimeon princess unrooted cutting from Etsy. It took forever to root, such slow growth.. I just want a Hoya that Grows;
    I potted them up together as mates, since they both refuse to grow. ( Lol)
    The princess has put on a few new leaves. The Compacta hasn't lost its newest leaf yet.
    🥺😅 Irony in hoyas. .I wish I would have just got the carnosa. I wonder if that cashier ( or owner) was being hateful?

    Love the Hoya video - they are my favorite!
    You are very comfortable with pon - Hoyas absolutely love pon! You could repot your slow growing Hoyas in pon in 3” plastic pots or smaller plastic cups. You can experiment with watering them like soil, or leaving the normal small reservoir of water. If a Hoya is stagnant for a long time, check the roots and see if they have any dry stringy roots or any roots that don’t pass the tug test. Then cut those roots off and plant in a moist substrate or water (I often re-root Hoya cuttings in pon).
    Another comment talked about false mites - they cause the Hoya to stop growing. If you look at the underside of the leaf and notice brownish dry scarred looking patches - get a magnifying glass and check for the microscopic red mites. Or if you start having growth points that grow a tiny bit and stop. I found out about false mites the hard way and they infected my whole cabinet 😬
    I love your compacta variegata too, but I can’t buy one because of how slow they grow!

    I have the same exact problem with my variegated compacta and I think I’ve figured out that it does better in a plastic pot and likes a bit more moisture and humidity. I made the mistake of potting it last summer in cactus/succulent soil and put it in a clay pot. It was doing great outside until I brought it inside! By Halloween, 2 of the 3 cuttings in my pot shriveled up and died. I re-potted the lone survivor in richer soil and put it in a small plastic pot, started watering it more and put it in a brighter window and I finally have a new leaf starting.

And then a few months ago it lost all its leaves and nearly died😐 Luckily i managed to air layer it and the tiny growth point came back to life and now I have tiny baby leaves:) I never throw out my plants anymore until I know that they are 100% dead lol

    After this past winter, I absolutely swear by using cactus fertilizers for my Hoya. Specifically, I've been using Espoma's cactus fertilizer. It's a gentle organic fertilizer, so I don't reduce it by half like I normally would with other fertilizers. I've been seeing new growth from Hoyas that previously hadn't grown for 6+ months and I've gotten peduncles from other Hoyas that had never bloomed for me before. Since I use grow lights all year round, I kept fertilizing even in the winter, and that made such a huge difference on the growth. I also agree with another comment that propagating your slowest Hoyas could help stimulate new growth!

    the reason the variegated compacta should be in it's original pot is because in order for the majority of hoyas to grow and flower is to be pot bound. That size hoya will take forever to fill that pot. I would try usint a much smaller pot

    My mathilde is a good grower too, though she slowed way down this winter. I recently acquired her sister, the chouke, and she quickly put out one leaf and is working on another. My krimson queen and my krinkle 8 are my best growers by far, and I've just purchased a Susie Q baby, which is supposed to be a cross between them, and I hope it'll be just as good a grower. My slowest is my gorgeous vitellina, which has one leaf after 7 months, though I did lose the growth point through under watering. My dischidia ovata finally put out a new leaf and a second growth point after nearly a year-and a mouse ate them both! Grrr.

    Hoya Mathilde is absolutely my fast growing and fave hoya. I’ve only had my hoya mathilde for almost 5 months as I am new to hoyas. I got it as a small plant with less than 10 leaves. It has probably doubled and tripled in leaves now and I have 3 peduncles now and 2 is already blooming. 😍 I don’t do anything special, no extra humidity, no extra heat, no greenhouse. Just my regular house condition. I also just had a hoya chelsea as a 3 leaf plant. Got it 2 months ago and it has put out 3 leaves for me. I just neglect all my hoyas as what everyone is telling me. 😁

    Watching hoya compacts grow is like watching paint dry! 😂😁🤣💚
    I had one that was older established with tendrils (4) 3+ft. Plenty of bright indirect light and not 1 single penducle 9r bloom all the years I had it. Then one day at decided to start dying. So disappointing.

    I'd be curious to see the roots of that compacta variegata. I noticed hoyas can survive forever with a bit of root rot, they just won't grow much. That being said, when I have a stagnant plant I like to switch its substrate completely, so if it was my plant I would probably put it in pon.

    Hi Fern!!! ❤︎ My fastest growing Hoya would have to be my Lacunosa Snowcaps. She’s bloomed for me 5 times since I got her (5 MONTHS AGO)
    My slowest growing Hoya has been my Kerrii for sure 🤪😩 She is soooo close to giving her first leaf for me!
    I have a pretty full basket of Chelsea and the cuppy leaves are an absolute favorite of mine. I find that even my established plant is pretty moderate when it comes to growth. So, I hope you’re able to get a nice, full plant soon!!

    I would add a bunch of coco husk to should mix. It took me 3 years since the start of my soil journey but all my hoyas are finally thriving. The main trick is lots of air on the roots with a super chunky soil. Most people seem to use orchid bark but I've had terrible luck with root rot when I use orchid bark. So my suggestion is lots of coco husk on the no growers

    Pull your slow growing plants from the pot and dust the roots with mycorrhiza and then add some silica to you water…. That will help establish good roots and stems.

    I am struggling on my baby ones Hoya’s since there roots are still not fully established there in there cocoa coir plugs. I keep them in the sun to help it grow hopefully next year they be more mature into a young adult plant. The matures ones i just spray with orchid spray and i have noticed they are growing new leaves. I spray more on the empty stems so growth nodes will appear for new leaves to come on. There are some Hoya’s who are slower to grow so i would not worry to much. My fastest ones are the Hoya Krimson Queen and Princess.

    I reckon any stress you give a hoya, puts it into survival mode.
    I'd cut your compacta back at a few places, and see what happens.
    I don't think it needs repotting or extra humidity.
    Give it a fright and cut it back.....go on, I dare you!
    I bet you it will grow much faster when it's been shook.
