Austrian Schnapsen (based on German "66"), is an awesome point-trick card game that uses European point system:
A = 11
10 = 10
K = 4
Q = 3
J = 2
You try to "go out" with 66 points in won tricks. If you get a "royal marriage" ( KQ pair, trump suit) worth 40 points, you may be confident to close the talon and play out cards in hand. But if you don't get 66, the last trick played wins entire hand. A "plain marriage" (KQ same-suit) is worth 20 points.
Scoring for hands won goes like this:
2 points if ＞= 66 points and opponent ＜ 33 points
1 points if ＞= 66 points and opponent ＜= 33 points
3 points if ＞= 66 points and opponent didn't win any trick.
1 point for last trick won if talon/hand is exhausted.
You play game to 7 points: German "66" scores 0 to 7; Schnapsen scores 7 to 0.
In informal games, you may look at your own won-trick cards.
Trump Jack may be replaced with facing trump card at bottom of talon.
Lead trick and opponent do not have to play trump (trump always wins trick), but other player must play led suit or trump if he/she has it, after 1) talon is closed or 2) talon is exhausted.

There is in my country a very popular card game called 1000. This is actually a very primitive card game but is/was very popular among children and I played it a lot. Now I've learnt the game is called Russian schanpsen in English. I was startled very much and started to read about schnapsen and 66. I've learnt it and find it very entertaining! The game is much more elaborate than 1000.

Last night he tried to teach me Schapsen with limited success.. Many of the rules are somewhat counterintuitive to me coming from bridge and similar.. This cleared up a lot of confusion! Thanks!

I think you can only declare marriage only if your playing a card first. Also you should have the nines that are worth 0 points but you can use the trump nine to switch it with whichever trump is under the deck during your turn - also if its your turn to pick the last card and you have the trump nine in your hand, you can give it to your opponent and you will take the last 2 cards (trump and one facing down). My dad used to play many years ago, I am getting flashes of the rules. :)
My understanding you need the Nine to make the switch.
@@larrybakeman2733 the Austrian variant of 66 "Schnapsen" is without the Nine cards, so the jack is the least valued.

@07:38 do not play the aces, play the diamong queen instead and you win the game. (you'll get the last trump card from the tailor and have 3 aces plus the king which are all safe yours.)

Why would you start explaining strategy before you explained the rules? You made this way to confusing. Start with the basics when you are explaining the game to a beginner.
By the way, you can only announce any marriage (in most cases) after you have taken at least one trick.
Yes, from pagat.com: "Although a marriage can be melded any time that a player has the lead, the score does not count until the melder has taken a trick. So for example, a player may declare 40 for the King-Queen of trumps on the opening lead, but if she doesn't take a trick by the end of the hand her score is zero."
Or, you have to get a trick to get the marriage points?

@@p1nesap I'm not from Austria, but nearby. Playing card games since I was a little child, mostly Skat but also others.
You're actually making a mistake there: You are only allowed to play this "plain marriage" when you are playing the first card. Your opponent played the 10 of clubs, therefore you are not allowed to play the plain marriage. Your opponent can even force you to split up the King and the Queen without playing them as a pair this way.
So you can only play marriage if you're leading trick?
Yeah, exactly. That actually holds for the exchange of the trump card below the talon also. So you're only allowed to do this when you're leading trick.
There is another thing I have to tell you: when the talon is exhausted then you are right in saying that you have to play on suit to your opponent's card, but when you are able to win the trick, then you are constrained to do it even if it means that you have to play a trump card.
Remember that I am only trying to help you, so if you have any more questions just ask. There are actually some more minor rules that you didn't mention.
Yes these points are all very true! I live in Austria now, and I love this game. I grew up playing Euchre so it was a quick learn for me!
ThePhoenixfromtheAsh I don't get one thing about marriages : imagine if the opponent plays the queen of trump and I play the king of trump, I win this trick but do I get 40 points? same question with plain marriages.

you do know they have the queen of spades, you used it for the marriage and they won the trick with it. but at least this minor mistake shows memory of trick cards won is important.
This game is great at training you to count cards.
I believe the only problem with declaring a marriage, as it has nothing to do with winning a trick, is that your opponent knows you have theses cards. Is that correct? I have seen where the King is the card you are playing when a marriage is declared. I am new at this.
@@larrybakeman2733 example you are having 27 points and you are on the move. You declare trump marriage its 40 points for you which makes you 67 and you don't need any more, you don't actually play a card. Just show marriage finishing the round. Does that make a sense?

Is it true that a 10 is only the high card if it is trump, or all 10's before the talon is gone?
10 always worth 10.
Ace is highest card, worth 11.
Jack is 2, Queen 3, King 4.

This tutorial is not a good one, as it is misinforming you. Se on 2:55 you don't HAVE to follow a suite, as the hand is a) not closed, b) you can still buy a card after a move. You only HAVE to follow a suite if game is closed or there are no more cards to be drawn. So on his first move you can still reply with Jand thats a wasted king on opponents side.
Also waaaaay uninformative, you CAN'T declare a marriage if you are NOT initiating a move. That why taking a lead move gives tactictal advantage. I came to this tutorial only because i forgot how much points you need to finish a hand

Dealer had Queen, opponent had King (of diamonds). That is not a marriage, but I get how that could be a cool strategy (like rummy).

@21:20 You DO exactly know that the other player has the two highest trumps. because you dont have them and they has not been laid. One of the most important things in this to notice which cards are still in the game. After the talon is exhausted you should know what your opponent does hold in his hands.

Congratulations, Martin Tompa, on your superb book, which I'm enjoying tremendously. After discovering Cribbage, I thought that was the best two-hander ever, but I've come to see that Schnapsen/66, in a very different way, is equally good. Unfortunately, the game seems to be rather neglected here in Germany - maybe I'll be able to change that in a small way. Alles Gute und bleiben Sie gesund!

You win the first game because you had over 66 point in my case nur you not called.
