Such a legend actress, especially at the age of 81, and still has the voice sound of a young-age woman, I could sit down all day and just listen to her stories.
I talked a little bit at a autograph signing at Marshall Field's here in Chicago. And she was so pleasant to talk to. She didn't brush me off quickly like so many other celebs do when their plugging their autobiography . She told me that she had a son in law with the same name as mine .

She was extremely informed and very intelligent and thoughtful. THIS INTERVIEW IS ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY!! I'm so JEALOUS!! I was only 4 years old (born in 1976). But, it's sad Ms. Swanson's entire commentary was absolutely poignant. She was born the last year of the 19th Century (1899)....and 80 years old, at the time of this interview. That's crazy. Her perspective on: the degradation of our society/culture....chemicals in our foods.....crimes in New York City ( and cops demoralized, due to the laws favoring criminals ).....the degradation of film with vulgarity and sexual overtones, etc. It's so sad WE all know the events within the 40 years; following this interview. I have the DVD of _Beyond the Rocks_ that was lost for decades. It ended up being discovered in a deceased collector's storage shed in the Netherlands. The film was quite intact in its original cans which was earlier distributed to movie houses. Not sure how the collector got it but he likely had it for decades. Anyway, on the DVD they included a very looong ♥️ vocal interview of Gloria Swanson. Practically a monologue. She speaks about Valentino at length.
I'll add, they used to go riding around Benedict Canyon near Cielo Drive. Near where Sharon Tate would later be murdered. Valentino had a stable down the hill from Falcon Lair. They were good friends but never lovers. He was like a brother to her.

Basically everything Glo talked about still applies today. She was a very insightful person. Looks amazing and likely could have ditched the hat. There was so much suspense in wondering if she might be able to get that glove on over the paperweight-like ring she was wearing!! LOL
You'll notice she wore the glove on her right hand only. People used to keep at least one glove on so that they could touch public surfaces and shake hands while gloved. That originated in the days before antibiotics and proper sanitation. Imagine streetcars and trains, etc... with all those exposed surfaces carrying germs. At their beginnings. Every single scene. The surf scene, the biker scene, the hippy scene, the guru scene, (Hanging with the Momas and The Papas) the drug scene, definitely the drinking scene from his parents...he even meets Charles Manson. Skis with Nicholson. A wonderful droll self effacing read. And very funny. And yes, Marlena bringing home made cookies over, and Judy singing at the home piano....

It just seems completely surreal to be sitting so close to a living legend engaging in simple chit-chat. I would've been so spellbound that it would've been difficult to string words together.

Yep! She was just a wee lil thing. Her height was just a bit under 5 feet tall! Mae West was also super short (the shoes sue wore to lift her were hilarious looking), as was Mickey Rooney. A lot of folks were shorter back then. My great grandmother was born when the golden era starlets were born (she was born around 1902), and she was a total shrimp too. Did Ms. Swanson pronounce Los Angeles in a different way? Or was she mentioning another city with a similar name to Los Angeles? Never heard Los Angeles pronounced that way before.
yes she pronounces the g in 'angeles' as the hard g in 'angle'. I think it was a variant that was popular in the 1920s and catching on at some point again in the 70s.

What a nice lady. I've never heard he speak in an interview. I too am appalled by the behaviors in film today. None of it appeals to me. Sex and violence seems to be the order of the day. What she is saying about laws not being enforced is happening today multiplied by the tens of thousands.

I imagine this was not a particularly satisfying interview for Ms. Wygant! Gloria Swanson led a fascinating life and coud be a very witty and entertaining person, so it is a pity she spent so much time in her later years bemoaning everything she felt was wrong with the world. But she looks absolutely gorgeous here - really stunning.
