WTF...a radiator you freaking found in a field ? Too much BS ! I have never had so many problems on engines I have built over the years. Good point for you is this is my first and last time watching your videos. Have a great day.
Yes there is a point in announcing a departure. Just the fact you put out content does not make your information informative nor educational. Just the thought of a wing it picking up and freaking using an old radiator makes me wonder why people want to show their ignorance, but you certainly did that today. Nice shop, correct tools, and a freaking mud filled radiator. Get a new radiator and bolt it in place after you clean the muddy water out of the block. When you think you have enough lube on the parts, put on some more !
Honestly, it's pretty refreshing to see a "fail" video once in a while. Not everything goes to plan every time, and being a mechanic myself..... I've fallen on my face due to cutting corners to meet a deadline. Great first video. Keep them coming bud.
Cody! Congratulations man, always love seeing you over on Polebarn. You've got a great sense of humour and top tier car knowledge - the perfect TH-cam recipe!
I said it once when Dalton asked us to support you and I'll say it again. Watching you just makes me happy. I love your sense of humor and you are quite knowledgeable. Can't wait to see where you go with the channel. I like the first build too.
I had 2 cams wipe out on break in on my all new rebuilt 454. Comp Cam and lifters each time. This last time I used Comp Mutha Thumper cam, but Isky lifters. **Important to check each lifter!!** to be sure they have slight dome in center and chamfers on the edge. Lifter set#3 from Comp did not! Isky did. Now, no problems. Looking forward to more content from ya
Some of us don't have a clue what you're doing. Some of us don't care. Some of us just watch for the fun of it. Keep up the good work. You'll have plenty of people willing you on. It's very entertaining. Thank you 👍🏼
Man, that sucks! I went through this with two comp cams camshafts, ate lobes, ended up needing bearings the second time... I didn't touch that 350 for three years... finally have it ready to go again.
Yup I get it. I would definitely do light springs then switch in your heavy aftermarket springs if you’re going flat tappet. Dump in all the magic goo and fairy dust you can find.
People bich about the extra cost of a roller camshaft kit. Well if you add the cost of a roller camshaft kit plus a Summit flat tappet camshaft with lifters and comp flat tappet camshaft with lifters.....your really gonna get frustrated. Lesson learned, go roller. Cant wait to see the firebird do a burnout 👍🏻
Oh I don’t disagree in the slightest. My frustration is the fact that they can still sell a product (name brand) that has such a high failure rate. The cam manufacturers can blame it on the oil and procedure all they want. The fact is you used to be able to toss a cam and lifter set it. Throw a hand full of dirt into it and idle it to break it in. Now even if you don’t cut corners like me and do everything by the manufacturer recommendations it seems like you still have a 50-50 chance if it failing. Firebird is there. I’m finishing it this weekend.
I ran a comp cams 268h in my 302 I built over the summer and had good luck. Also ran their lifters with it. I rotated the engine to make sure all the lifters spun before putting the intake on.
I like your engine stand with the hand crank. I saw one that an old truck driver made that did essentially the same thing and I plan to build one like his because the parts can be bought cheaper
I have another stand I tried to make my own hand crank style and it just can’t hold up to the weight of an engine. It may be useful for a trans or something just not an engine. The one I purchased is a life saver.
Glad to finally get off my butt and find you as your brother is a heck of a guy. Dalton has his son working with him and thats so dang cool. I am a seventy four year old ex mechanic of heavy equipment. You break in engines on diesels similar to gas engines and so rather than fire it up and go straight to high rpms..... we tuned as well as possible. You didn't have as far as I can tell the timing absolute. And so if I am correct, the heat from bad timing killed this motor.... Ya, I call engines motors. After all, its harley motor cycle or ford motor, chevy motor division, ya da ya da. Valve pressure in my day was never quite the issue since we didn't know of this as a way to build a motor up. Our choice of power was fuel and timing. Also very heavy counter balancers to get that high torque we needed to go with power. I would take a old school 350 cummins motor, their all 855 cubic inch and the power is in the pump for fuel and timing. You are good by using a thermostat in the engine to control the water flow. So that said, valves are important but they should rotate okay. I almost want to say that unless you boil the block, its got way too much metal in the oil galleys to ever just flush like you did and it also ate the lifters. By the way so to improve our friendship here, great little engine stand... the squirrel fan is a must for this system. I had a radiator out of a old ford flathead so it had the two outlets on top and bottom. I just picked the one needed and the cap on the other plus I put in my system a high spot for the engine coolant to release any air in the system. Once certain its full of water and some antifreeze to maintain the water temps then its good to go. I wish my health was better as I would travel around and show people things I have learned plus I learn from all of you guys as well. Only time you stop learning is when the ticker quits and yer not fogging up the mirror. I almost forgot but zinc is important to any motor regardless of miles. I also just use the standard oil pump, no high volume or high pressure as it just forces out the oil seals, pushes any dirt through the engine, ....... the guys who designed those old engines didn't wake up yesterday and come in with a silly grin saying hey lets try this. Lots of time has gone into the manufacturing of a engine. I do like the double valve springs on the newer engines like that one you are working with. Again that said, old school engines just don't have that metal mass to handle high RPM's and the four bolt main was trying but just barely making it work as they have cameras that show the block distorting on them when turning past several high rpms. Hence big block for the win and the engine mass equalled torque that took any wheel apart that wasn't solid steel. Hey, just having fun is the most important to success. Ya can't say you were drunk or stoned like we were back in the fifties and sixties.... hell a little acid was a lot a fun before someone put me in the f***ing army. I might of been the guy who wrote those instructions on the cam... "Fur" I was thinking is on the crack of my donkey.
Man, hate to see the project gone wrong, LOVE the honesty and the way your dealing with it. More teaching this way than most videos for sure. Keep it up ! Glad your making videos !
You almost need a time machine to get a good cam broken in in a BBC today. Hell. They went flat all the time back in the day. They oil the mains 1st. Makes them super tough high rpm friendly but they don't oil the cam well at low speeds. I've heard of guys adding a spray bar to the system. Right on top of the cam in the lifter galley. Bite the bullet. Order the roller😂
That’s the spirit buddy! Not enough people look at life like that! Really stoked to see this motor in that car! Definitely give it another shot and maybe have someone with you to catch something you might miss ! Have faith man 👍
Alright!! Man, such a nerve wracking process. When I think about all the parts moving in there im amazed that they ever run at all. Looking forward to all your videos!

@@JCSProjects well if you, or when you put another camshaft in it, and if it tears it up again, might want to try and houn out the lifter holes, the lifter might be hanging up on something? I don't know I never done it yet, or never had a problem with killing cams. Lol..
Last comp I put in my big block the lifters collapsed during break in. I’ve been running clay smith cams ever since with no issue. Also had Howard’s lifters do the same thing.

Great effort on that 454. Don’t beat yourself up too bad, the market is flooded with junk flat tappets blanks and trash lifters. Most of us have had a cam or two go flat back in “the good ole’ days” but the past 10 yrs has been ridiculous with garbage being put in fancy boxes with high price tags. My friend used to cut corners too and destroyed a nice pair of aluminum, large port, open chamber, L88 heads. He didn’t check deck height. I was skeptical about you being related to Dalton, and then you broke out the Self Tappers, and my faith was renewed. 😆 Also, there can't be enough said for the use of Break-in oil, in particular with High Pressure vale springs. My friend ran into the same problem with the 355 small block Chevy using comp cams wiped out both camshafts in the break and they were the same grind. Flat tappet hydraulic. It probably wasn’t your break in just the cam and lifters. I’ve seen lots of cams installed with very little break in and I have round tracker buddies who don’t even do it. They break it in wide open and they never had no problem I think the main problem is always bad camshaft and lifters that’s on the market.
You have a great way of just rolling with it. You've gotta use a ton of zddp additive with new flat tappet cams. Some break in oils have it but it sure is expensive. I had a big mutha thumper in a small block and I still used zddp and it still killed two lobes. There's only a few lifter makers and I hear Howards is up there with the best. The lifters are not ground correctly from the factory and some don't spin. I don't think it's your fault. So ,thanks for a great show. Keep up the good work!!
More More More videos please mate it's great you admitted your mistake and even showed where you went wrong. First class. Can't wait for the next video.

They break it in wide open and they never had no problem I think the main problem is always bad camshaft and lifters that’s on the market.
Awesome Cody, great to see you have a channel :)
Hey, thanks! More coming!
Great first video. Gladly subscribed. Looking forward to future projects/videos.
Dayum, those wheels!
Well made video, I just realized you started a channel from live chat on Pole Barn Garage, you’re absolutely right it’s how you deal with failures
Awesome work Cody. Too bad about the cam/lifter and break in.
