I just got my CMP about a month ago. Service grade. 1941 colt frame with Remington Rand slide. Better condition than any I shot in the Army and doesn’t have markings that suggest it went back to the Armory and doesn’t rattle. FOIA says it was a Navy Surface Warfare pistol. The Navy took good care of it. It has a 1985 barrel from IMI. A few other parts not original, but of the period. I love it.
Round 4 RGN 47272 waiting. Round 3, I received a service grade 1943 Remington Rand frame, G.I. replacement slide (Colt National Match Hard Slide). "MR" overstrike on Army Ordnance stamp (Mount Rainier Arsenal). All inspection initials and roll marks nicely legible. It is a very nice piece of military history and shoots very well also. I'm a retired USAF MSgt ('73-'95) SP, armorer, and flight operations, then First Sergeant. You received a VERY nice looking pistol. Congrats. I am grateful to CMP for making these available and most are nicely done.
i cant recall exactly what serial numbers wer but i do recall their being navy pistols in the 1941-42 production my 1942 colt is in the 808xxx is the shipment directly after the navy guns that went to the army. and dose the slide in your gun have matching numbers under the firing pin retainer plate? mine was a local vet bring back so its numbers matching still. i got lucky wen i found mine lol but you kinda won the lottery on this one!
Thanks! Ill have to check the serial number there when I break it down. Should have a range & breakdown video out at some point as I go through some more of my projects.
Grading has been pretty consistent from what I have seen, however I will say that your service grade has more appreciable wear than most I see. That being said, it in no way detracts from the history, value, or beauty of it. Now its time to get it to the range!
it looks like the first 1.5 inches are a darker blue then the rest of the slide or is that a lighting thing? Also make sure you FOIA the US Military for the history of yours. Mine had some interesting things. The only bad part is their records only go back to like the 1980s.

That's awesome you found that about it's service. You got that info through a FOIA request?

The grade system is completely random

Yes, Colt slides have a two tone slide as part of the heat treat. That's a good suggestion I'll give that a try.
CMP's ordering system - looks like a mess on their site - that needs an overhaul...they do offer quite a few diff grade 1911's though !
Worth the journey to make the order IMO.
LOL these old pistols about anything the gubbment makes any money on. 😂
