    ► SCRIPT
The contenders are. The DDJ-400, DDJ-SB3, S2 MK3, and the Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX.
But before we begin, let me first say they’re similarities:
They all cost $250 except the S2 Mk3
They’re all USB bus-powered. Which means no need for a power adapter
They all come with RCA outputs and a 3.5mm headphone input.
Their knobs, jog wheels and tempo faders all feel standard
Alright with that said let’s begin!
    _____
    Let’s start with the DDJ-400.
The major strengths of this controller are the following:
It comes with Free Rekordbox DJ Software. And this software is complete! No need to upgrade to anything here, because all the features you’ll ever need from DJing are all here and more, and nothing is off-limits unless you want to upgrade to Cloud Service stuff.
The layout is similar to the equipment in the clubs. So practicing on this controller and its software, better prepare you to handle using the more expensive stuff down the line.
The responsiveness of the jog wheels and everything else is lightning fast. Scratching feels a breeze on this controller.
    And its weaknesses are:
It feels plasticky. It’s pretty lightweight, but the overall feel of the controller is kinda cheap.
The Jog Wheels and tempo faders are small, making it a little bit more difficult for beginners to mix. At least in the early stages
You can only activate one effect on one deck at a time
    Next is the DDJ-SB3.
The major strengths of this controller are the following:
Similar to the 400. The responsiveness of this controller with Serato feels lightning fast. Scratching also feels amazing on this controller!
You can activate 3 effects on each deck, which makes creative mixing a lot more fun
The jog wheels and tempo fader are a bit bigger on this unit compared to the 400, which is always appreciated.
    And its weaknesses are:
Like the 400. Since they’re made by the same company, this controller feels too lightweight and plasticky.
It comes with Serato DJ Lite, a beginner DJ software, which only lets you do the core essentials of DJing and nothing else.
Anyway, the next controller on this list is the Traktor S2 Mk3, and its strengths are:
Its software. I’ve been using Traktor since 2007, and to this very day, I still use it because of its dependability and overall amazing perfect layout.
It feels premium! Its weight is solid, and everything on this controller just screams quality.
And its weaknesses are the following:
    It’s expensive at $330 dollars.
The software is out of date. Native Instruments is no longer focused on catering to the growing needs of the DJ.
And finally, let’s talk about the Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX:
    So its strengths are:
It has the biggest jog wheels, tempo faders, and volume faders among all these units - making learning how to mix for beginners a lot easier and intuitive
It has a paddle FX feature which makes using effects feel fun
In the center of each jog wheel is a color display which helps keep your eyes on the equipment
    And its weaknesses are:
    It comes with Serato Lite.
Among all the controllers in this list...It’s not the best to scratch with. You can technically do the basics, but doing the more advanced and complicated stuff is a stretch compared to using the SB-3.

I gotta say. It’s crazy that with your level of experience and your wide knowledge of DJ equipment and music in general, you chose to make a video to give beginners tips of what is good for starting out. That’s something that guys like Martin Garrix and Marshmello (who aren’t any more skilled than you) aren’t doing. Thank you so much, it really means a lot to someone like me who isn’t very good and wants a professional opinion. I still come back to this video for tips.

Hey! Thank you again for the killer review. I have the 400, and I must say your descriptions about the ups and downs are exactly spot on, and especially about the jog wheels. Anyway, I know someone had asked you they were looking to upgrade into the Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX, but you gave them a tip to go for the DDJ-800. If you don’t mind me asking, why besides the $100 drop on the 800? I was looking into the DDJ 800 as well, but I see that SoundCloud still got some ground to catch up in their music catalogue, and I wish Rekordbox had made an attempt to lure Spotify or at least Tidal. Do you think maybe in the near future Tidal will make it to Rekordbox? Also, I been using my iPhone to use my DDJ 400. What is a good entry level laptop and cheap that I can possibly use the DDJ 800 or at least the DDJ 400 that I do have so I can get familiarize with the DDJ 400? Sorry for these many questions, but just intrigue. And to anyone considering the DDJ 400, it’s a great controller. Thanks again 🔥

Hi Carlo thanks for all the vids you made it’s awsome you made me back to DJ !!!
I’m so confuse now help me please. Just came back to DJing during quarantine after a 10 years break. I buyed a DJ2GO2 to start using Serato lite and I want to upgrade soon. Until few days my heart went to the SB3 + Serato Pro. But this Numark came and it looks great : the biggest Jog Wheels with screen. The FX pad looks fun too. And the overall quality looks really good. So I was like OMG that’s the one !!! Then I watch this !!!
I want a controller I can scratch but it’s not my primary goal. I’m more live mix and mixtape maker (with few scratch sometime) using ableton link.
    Should I buy the Numark or a SB3 ?

  • @Actinesque

I went with S2 MK3 because pretty much everyone around who's not a mainstream club DJ is rocking Traktor software and hardware here. Also because I liked NI's software over the other two, and also because I like S2's more premium look. Also I got it for like $260 new from the store in Europe, and not $330. This said, I agree that DDJ-400 could be a perfect controller for beginners. Maybe lower latency too (because I feel that on S2 the jogs lag just a tiny but noticeable bit)

Hello, and thanks for all your videos!
I'm looking into this, for possible smaller solutions for certain gigs, as well as possible recommendations for a friend. My current setup is an MC7000 in a large and heavy flight case. It works great, but for some smaller events/venues, something smaller and lighter might be nice.
For myself, or others who have a higher interest level and are definitely dedicated to DJing, and can afford somethong a bit more....what is your opinion on stuff like the DDJ-SR2, Inpulse 500, DDJ-800, or snagging one of the last MC7000 units that some retailers still have on hand?

After trying and exploring the Mixtrack Platinum, I found that the controller is just the best for me
But I do admit that to do the scratch, specially left hand scratch, it is very risky to accidentally stop the second deck song because the position of the right hand unless you're using hamster mode
The crossfader also has few mm of dead space which makes some scratch techniques harder to achieve
But overall, it just simply perfect because of the size is so compact and light, it also look quite premium, just complete it with small balanced output mixer to bring it to rock big speakers
Under $500 with it surely I can get the best complete mobile/bedroom DJ set

I have DDJ SB2 which is pretty much same with SB3. And that's pretty good for me. I think mixtrack platinum fx has the most interesting feature, that's a hold n on effect it's like a mixer from turntables set. And btw I used that effect manually on my controller which is a little bit need more effort to do it. I always want to try hold n on effect, and I'm pretty surprised because that feature comes with controller.

Kind of agree because you get the Full Recordbox license out the box with the 400.
I actually returned my 400 and got the Roland DJ202 because i got a good price version of Serato Pro and it has a built in Drum machine & Sequencer and access to 4 Decks to boot.
I think the 202 out the box with Serato DJ Lite is pretty comparable to the SB3 for functionality with the plus of the Drum machine, Sequencer & 4 decks access.
What i do miss however is not having the Dedicated Loop buttons which instead are found in the 8 Performance pads.

Learnt on a djj 400 and had always slated numark but recently used my mates mixtrack and was blown away by the pitch faders they are really smooth and about twice as long as pioneers which are almost unusable. If you want to mix without sync you’ll save yourself a lot of time going with numark

I got the S2 Mk3 and knowing it figures in the top 4 is still a good sign. There are a lot of other DJ controllers like Roland, Hercules, Gemini, etc... So far I made a good choice even if in 4th position. ;) Continue your good work of teaching us the magic world of DJ-ing Carlo.

    • @aldaris38
      @aldaris38 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@djcarlo The big main reason I chose the S2 MK3 was that Traktor Pro 3 full version software was included with the controler. As you mentionned in your video, this software might be a little behind vs the other softwares, so far it is still fully packed of features and well serve any DJ needs. If you pick the DDJ Sb3 or the Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX, you only get Serato DJ Lite and if you upgrade to the full version, you ended up way over the price (here in Canada) of the S2 MK3 for getting the same software features. For the DDJ400, is the Recordbox software a full version or a lite one?

The DDJ SB2 was quite resistant to spilled beer, I tested it multiple times so hopefully the new Pioneer gear has kept this essential "feature"! Due to someone who was subsequently ejected and barred from the venue my friend unfortunately had to test it out on his DDJ-SX3 as well..

I think it's important to keep in mind what kind of music you think you'll be mixing most. For example, as someone who mixes mostly dubstep, riddim, bass house and dnb scratching isn't as important to me as it would be for someone mixing hip-hop. That said, the platinum FX is was more enjoyable for me to use than my SB3 was.
However, I do think it's important to mention that another downside to the Platinum FX is that it only allows you to have one effect active at a time (you can still use it on both decks though)
Also, it doesn't have a beat jump setting for the pads by default like some other controllers do (pretty sure the ddj-400 has that) which is a really good feature to have when you're doing improv sets in case you miss a cue point and need to get back quickly without messing up the music.

I was going to hold out for a ddj400 when they become available again in the UK and not at the vastly inflated used price they are right now. The ability to download cuepoints in RB was a big plus for me as a beginner.
However, I have large hands and the outboard positioning of the rotary controls in the center 'section' is a major plus. So now I am leaning towards the FX..

I wouldn't call Traktor software dead btw. Problem with Traktor Pro 3 is its legacy code, it's basically upgraded software back from all the way in 2000. That's why Native Instruments is rebuilding Traktor from the ground up with their Traktor DJ 2, which btw, makes the S2 mk3 play very well with iPad.

Originally I was convinced to go with the DDJ 400 but quarantine made the 400s sell out quick. Ended up with the SB3 and I’m glad I did. It’s fun learning so far plus with the crap Rekordbox just did I would gladly upgrade to Serato Pro and not have to pay for a subscription. One thing I wish Serato Lite did was place the counters on the track wheels along with the tempo so it would be an easier visual for beginners. The tempo numbers are small and in the corner and sometimes I have to move closer to the laptop to get it precise but other than that Serato Lite is fine.

I want to spend as little as possible. What controller would you recommend, I also like persice beat matching. How bad is the Numark FX for scratching? Do you thimk I should get the Pioneer ddj flx6 instead? Im worried about the Pioneer FLX6 because the tempo range doesn’t look enough. Can you get persice mixes on the pioneer. Thanks bro.

I am a beginner Dj and bought myself the Traktor S2. For my needs it was totally worth it. Since I am now used to the mechanics of the Traktor S2 (especially the loop function and beat jump), I find it way easier and more intuitive than when I am djing with the Ddj 200.
What I really don't like about the S2 is that I can only use one effect at a time (correct me if I'm wrong).

Been learning on an outdated Numark Mixtrack Pro, the original since Numark discontinued it and I can’t even get the drivers haha I wanted something to get a feel for so I knew what I was getting into when I bought for $40 on offer up, now after a couple months I have finally decided to get me the SB3 since I already have Serato Pro, with it I’ll be able to make much fluent mixes since I couldn’t use headphones with the Mixtrack Pro due to it being a 1/4 jack and even with an adapter still wouldn’t work, been just using my ears. I think I am ready to make the step up!
