I love to watch the young cows "frolic" when they're released into the new pens. You can tell those "kids" love to run and play just like human kids! Thanks for another entertaining video!

Well I finally managed to drop in yesterday after my delivery in Lytham. I picked up 2 steaks Ribeye for me and a Sirloin for the Mrs. Going to be having them for tea tonight. Will let you know if they're as good as they look

Listening to you listing out your tasks … I’m in technology and the one thing I repeat like a mantra is “just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean it’s the best use of your time.” Yes, you CAN scrape muck and push feed back, but those tasks can best be done by automation (more frequently and every hour if needed). Your time is better spent on things that HAVE to be done by you. You definitely have plenty of work, but I’ve heard you say the key thing. Work smarter, not harder. You will be having a family soon and you will want to spend time with them. Look at the automation (it pays for itself pretty quickly) so you have a more fulfilling life.

About the cow not laying in the cubicle, I believe the other day 10thgenerationfarmer showed that they actually tied the cow into the cube for a few hours till it learned to lay down.

I’ve been watching back from the very first vids this week and it’s really cool to see how your dad progressively shifts decisions to you and how your confidence has grown. I really enjoy the way you chat through ideas with us. And if people comment on the somewhat manic nature of your dialog, let them run a farm and manage all the thoughts and tasks you have to all day. I run my own pottery business and I can relate. Can’t wait for your book to ship! Thanks for ALLLLL the amazing vids. It’s helped me get through a tough year. All my best.

Tom great video as always, and really liked that you acknowledged your team for their efforts. Many years ago I had a boss who always every day made a point of thanking me for my contribution, and that meant a lot to me, so much so that I continued that same process with my own employees in my own business which helped my run my very successful company. Some employers out there need to remember there is no I in Team! Keep up the good work.

Horses too, not just cows, don't always like the brand new shiny trailers. A friend and I were taking our show horses someplace (very well trained used to hauling horses) and went to use her brand new trailer. Both horses would load partway and then fly backwards. We finally realized that the paint was so shiny that the horses could see their own reflections as soon as they got half way in. And they thought another horse was going to bash into them. Took a few handfuls of literal dirt and smeared it on the new paint up front and up and on the horses went no problem.

  • @mikeman584

That big cattle trailer well worth the investment. Calves cute and funny but can pack a serious punch as many a farmers kneecap and shin would testify. I think your focus on efficiency is the way forward.

** First times watching your videos. They're fine looking animals and I got really interested watching all the moving cows and bulls, busy day, busy people! Listening to the music at about 10:00, that distorted voice reminded me of how J. Lennon used that effect on some of his songs (coo coo catchoo). Those Highlanders certainly stand out. Quite handsome!
    Thank you for the video.

Hello Tom, I would love to see more animal content please! It was refreshing to see calves and seems you've had a lot born recently and I know your busy but just general chores like feeding calves, knowing what you have, who mums are etc and any special ones.catch up on sheep as don't see enough of them or the goats. Even Penny's horses and the dogs! Its great about the improvements but animals are the best...for me at least! Thanks

Hi Tom, when getting the heifer to learn the cubicles. If you get the heifer into a cubicle and get a piece of string or chain and lock her into the cubicle over night and she will eventually lean how to use the cubicles not by choice it sounds bad but it helps with cleanliness of the animal

If you do see the birthing video. You use a similar item but you don’t put the cows neck in between two metal rods…..then proceed to pull out the calf. You let the cow walk around and GENTLY help her push the cow out. You don’t yank it out. You are lovely telling your cow she’s doing a great job……you are a awesome person and a awesome farmer

Moving the weaned calves up through the new sheds feed passage, you can see how shiny and slippy that concrete is for the milkers to eat from, by the way one of the calves walking over the silage was when somebody tried to get her to move on. I've not seen that done anywhere before!!

I’m loving seeing more of your everyday jobs and I just have to say, DO NOT worry about the “manic” speech at times. Being dyslexic I do it all the time, it’s just how our brains work and it’s not something that can/should be changed. The way you talk through your “chores” is great and it’s who you are. Never change who you are for others only do it for yourself!!!

To teach heifer to cubicles just get a bar the is in a rectangle without a top and tape it with lots and lots and lots of tape so when it gets tired it sits down.
Use tape because then if the cow gets really flustered then it could get out if it used some strength

We had one heifer this year that kept laying in the scraper passage and wouldn't lay in a cubicle. We shut her into a cubicle with a gate at the rear and pallets blocking the sides with food and water for a few hours. After two times she started laying in cubicles and has done ever since. Brilliant videos by the way, keep up the good work.

Amazing vid Tom and amazing work, the only thing I’d advise doing is when you close the two back gates on your trailer is pushing backwards as if one kicks you won’t lose any teeth and you have more chance of staying on your feet, it’s a little thing I learned few years ago when I experienced that happening to someone I used to work with

we teach the heifers at a young age how (4-5 months) to lay in cubicles. if they don't lay in the cubicles we put them in the cubicles and then put a strap behind them so they can't get out and when they are tired of standing up, they will lay down in the cubicle. Then remove the strap and repeat the proces until they understand, takes some time sometimes but most of the times they learn fast.

The only problem i have is with the bull with dry cows if he tries to hump them and they go down then you loose a cow and calf. I doubt it but something to think about it.
