  • Leg Suck is a fairly unknown incident that can occur on a trike and we want to spread awareness of what you can do to prevent it and keep yourself safe! Much like wearing a helmet to protect yourself on a ride there are pedals and other accessories that can keep you safe aswell. Some come along as Harold helps you learn how to prevent Leg Suck.

I’ve been using mountain bike pedals with the metal grips on my trike. My foot never slips off. I literally have to pick my foot off the pedals. Put a pair on my wife’s too and she’s glad I did.

I had a leg suck recently. I had come to a stop and put on the parking brake but did not shut off the power button that was at my usual level 4 assist as I have some leg issues and that is the assist that seems to work well for me. I did not realize that where I stopped was just enough of a little slope that I started to roll. The parking brake must not have been depressed well. Thinking I was stopped I removed my left leg from the strap that is on my pedal. Fortunately I did not remove my right leg at that point. As with any accident situation, I am not sure exactly what happened next as I tried to stop the roll but most likely I hit the throttle as I was trying to apply the regular brakes. There was a surge forward. My left leg sucked under. I knew immediately what was happening as both my husband and I have been very cautious about making sure our feet stay on pedals when we are in motion. I'd seen a video about how suck can happen even when a trike does not have electric assist. My husband has the power straps and I have velcro straps and pedals that have good traction. Again I needed the velcro straps to accommodate a right leg that has poor range of motion so I have to be very forward on my pedal. The suck caused extreme pain in my whole left leg. But once I was able to get the leg out from under the trike seat, I was able to move the leg around and was even able to stand up and walk to and from the outhouse that was my destination. I decided to end my ride and head home which was two miles. As I rode, my leg except for my left ankle seemed to loosen up and was fine. By the time I got home, my left ankle was very swollen. I am now in a walking boot because of a slight fracture of my left fibula at my ankle. The boot will need to be on constantly except for when I sit on a shower chair and remove the boot during that time. I am not allowed to stand or walk without the boot. The pain in the ankle was never excruciating. The pain I did have responded well to Tylenol only. The swelling and bruising are down. I use a walker in some situations but can finally just walk in the boot around my house. So guess my suggestion is that even when stopping, make sure the parking brake is really holding the trike and turn off the power. Also, don't take feet off the pedals until all that is necessary to keep the trike from rolling is in place--parking brake and no power on. My trike has been my physical and emotional therapy and outside fun for over two years. I don't blame my trike for the accident.

Another option is mtb flat pedals and shoes. A large platform pedal such as a catalyst pedal and a five ten shoe will definitely keep your feet from slipping off. The mid foot placement on the pedal allows good power transfer and more of the shoe is gripped by pins on the pedal.
If your new to spd pedal remember that clear placement is as important on a trike as an upright bike. If needed watch some videos about how to do clear placement to help alleviate any potential knee or hip issues.

I'm on the recumbent trikes FB group. This battle between leg suck prevention usually results in some heated exchanges on there. That said, I've been riding with some spiked MTB pedals from Performance on my Catrike Expedition for nearly a decade now. No leg suck thus far. But plenty of rolls to the side😂😂

Leg suck sucks! I recently had my leg sucked under my trike and I fractured my fibula. I ended up needing surgery for an internal fixation (plate, pins, and screws). I’m currently restricted to non-weight bearing for 6 weeks post surgery to be followed by another 4 weeks in a walking boot. This accident occurred at relatively low speeds when I took a u-turn too sharply and probably too fast. The trike started to roll and I somehow pulled my foot out of the clip (unintentionally) and dropped it to the ground to stop the roll. But, the trike was still moving and ran over my foot.

Some good advice except for the idea of a 'pulling stroke.' If you want to work on damaging your knees pull. The problem is one's knee and its ligaments are not designed for pulling. Try it, really work at pulling and feel you knee and ligaments begin to stretch.

I use a maglock pedal. It allows you to walk much easier. I have still suffered leg suck when I have failed to properly/completely attach my feet to the pedal. This should reinforce whatever pedal you choose, MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMPLETLY attached to the pedal. For me those straps diagonally across the pedal never worked for me. The heal support options I have often seen for adaptive cycling set ups look like a good option for me, but not quite yet.

I've used heel slings for a long time. I have an '09 Cattike Trail. I didn't like having my feet locked on to the pedals. They're inexpensive and work well.

Is there a vid available about emergency braking or braking with a tadpole trike! I guess it lifts the rear wheel, right? Why isnt the rider positioned more to the rear to avoid it?
