Thank you so so much for this video! I am making hand made paper and want to emboss it. No one makes a large enough embosser. I want to lay the paper on top of the design, mist it with water, then sponge it up with cheese cloth so it leaves the design coming through from the back. Its a circle with tiny lettering.. I am still concerned which metal is the strongest, yet pliable to make my own worded design engraved on it?
Any metal you use would need to be backfilled. We usually use beeswax to fill the embossing or high-relief "cavities." For your purpose, the beeswax might be too soft; I suggest filling it with resin. As for which metal to use, most of the metals will pick up scratch marks, which can transfer to your paper. Copper, 8 mil, or 32 gauge is more challenging to emboss; however, it might give you the best results. Have a look at Basic Copper (basiccopper.com); they have lots of info on the different copper options for embossing. (ps. This answer is long overdue 😊)
This is absolutely fascinating. I definitely enjoyed watching the video on the different types of metals you use. I have a roll of the aluminum tape and I can’t wait until morning so I can try it. I make photo folios, mini books and journals and have used the aluminum to create spines. However, nothing as beautiful as yours. I have also used wax on some of my collage work and was wondering if you just use bees wax or some other type. Again, it was fascinating. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words. Aluminum tape or metal tape is getting more and more popular to create with. I love that you are making journals, mini books etc., something I am exploring but still need lots of practice :) Would you mind sharing how well the tape holds up on the spine with continuing opening and closing the journals? As for the wax, currently, I only use beeswax for filling the metal high relief designs, as it is the only wax known to me that does not shrink when cooling. I did a course on encaustic but haven't pursued it further; maybe it's time. 🙂
You show your example can you just tell me what size the thickness of the foils? it’s micons 36 gauge is 5 micons? What was the color sheets microns? What was the the micons of your lovely samples, what was copper/pewter unleaded what micons? Thank you😮
The thickness of the metal tape in the video is in microns. The pewter and the aluminum are gauges. The gauge for every metal is different. The pewter in the video is 36 gauge, which is ± 0.150mm thick. The aluminum in the video is also 36 gauge; however, it is ±0.135 thick. The colored aluminum in the video is ± 0.05mm thick. They also come in various thicknesses. Copper is substantially thicker than pewter; however, thinner copper is available. I hope this answers your question 😊
Meraviglioso...in Italia non si trovano questi materiali...grazie grazie bravaaaaaa ❤
Grazie ~ Sto valutando la spedizione in Italia. 😊Ho già iniziato a spedire in Germania. (I hope my Google Translate makes sense)
Thank you , this was very helpful!
I'm so glad to see you found value in my videos 😊
Where can I buy pewter rolls and aluminum rolls like the ones you demonstrated?
