Always wonderful to watch your work John. A pleasure to finally get to hear your voice. I seem to recall seeing Kieth Johnson do a vid once by candlelight on a similar “old days” theme where whale oil was identified as the preferred honing lube. Nice vid.
@ Unfortunately I can’t seem to find any dead whales here in Pennsylvania USA. One could easily hypothesize that Ben Franklin was referring to Pennsylvania crude on shale when he wrote “If you teach a young man to shave himself, and keep his razor in order…” Maybe oven duck fat and quartz. 🙂
I just got one of those boxes; it is very similar. It has a sliding dovetail to cover the thuringian that is glued to it. I wonder if it is the same maker. It seems to have very similar style. I didn't know that you could still get sperm whale oil. Is it more viscous? Washita's cut nice, a good addition to a honing kit. Is that your finest ark stone? Did you not have the edge regress on the sperm whale oil? How did it shave? Thank you for sharing and I hope you have a good weekend.
The oil is quite thick, but as you work it it seems to change. It doesn't seem to soak in to the stone. I have no reason to think the edge would regress after the slate when I used my Arkansas stone. I don't have that many Arkansas stone. I think i have four. It would probably make sense to use a soft ark after the Washita. Allot of time was needed on the next stone. This edge shaved really well. It reminded me of a good coticule edge.
@@nonamebear1136 This particular oil was harvested from a sperm whale that was found dead in a fjord in Norway. This is a vaste product from that whale. I don't think you can get this oil in the US.
@@seanstapelfeld There are no rules if you stay away from the honing police. There is probably a warrant out for my arrest due to these recent honing videos I have posted;) I am still not a certified bevel setter..
@ I think you hone better than all of them… oops they might come after me next but I’m sure after you they will go for bill m or Eric first before me so I have a head start to run hehe
What a cool setup JPO! Thanks again for sharing my friend!

Nice vid.
@@billm.2677 Hi Bill. I have seen Mr Johnson's video. That was probably what inspired me to try this oil. It works quite well.

I also have a black translucent Arkansas stone. This translucent is probably just as fine, but has a nicer feedback.
@@jpo31 Very nice. Thank you for the information. I wonder if I can get that oil in the USA. Is it labeled a certain way?

I love mg convex washita, but I have a chip in mine I got from being to aggressive won’t a knife. Need to take it back to the plate.
Awesome video JPO! i'm guessing the stone you used in the middle is shaped to the 25 ft wheel?
@@seanstapelfeld It was only the Washita that was convex. The rest of the stones were flat.
@@jpo31 This is very interesting! I have done 6 ft wheel to flat but always thought I was doing it wrong hehe
