Amanda, my life has been one trauma after another, and while I flirted with addiction, I didn't actually fall to it. Mainly because both of my parents were addicts, and it cost my father his life when I was still a baby. My mother left me with his mother to raise, and I was 4 years old the last time I saw her and didn't have a clue who she was. That, according to my grandmother (who blamed my father's death on my mother).
I do still get bouts of depression, but I've learned how to cope with them in a way that works for me. Though it's not something I can recommend to anyone else. Plus, my wife is a good support system. She knows that sometimes, I just need "tough love" because it's how we both grew up. But also, she knows when to simply "leave me alone" and sort it out myself.
But I do enjoy your reactions to music that I've enjoyed since their release.

My favorite line in this song was: "I get the joy of rediscovering you". I don't know if you remember, and for me it's ok if you don't, I am not really active here, but I lost my wife just over two years ago and songs like this remind me of her, Kerri Fleming (Corthell). I think you would really love "When you Love a Woman" by Journey. It's a song recorded around 1996 and describes how I feel about my wife, except we had no children, weren't able to

"Mother Father" (recommend their 'Live in Houston - 1981' version) not only showcases Steve Perry's voice, but has a message of having faith in the face of a family that appears to be broken... the theme (lyrics) "I'm your seventh son -- have faith... believe" rings loudly and deeply throughout the song. HIGHLY recommend.

Check out Open Arms, Lights, Who's Crying Now, or Send Her My Love, just to name a few. Steve Perry, "The Voice," is one of the greatest male singers of all time. He also went on to have a successful solo career and had several hits of his own. His silky range and control are otherworldly. If you want to hear his range, check out Mother, Father. It will blow your mind. They don't make music like this anymore. I'm glad I grew up when I did, hearing music from the 50s through the 80s on the radio regularly. I figured music would always be this good. Boy was I wrong. It's nice to see younger people discover the greats, and the pure talent before autotune destroyed the industry.

The album Frontiers came out in 1983. Faithfully is the 5th track from this album. I was only 22 at the time and like so many then, took for granted all the great songs, musicians and songwriters of the time. It took almost a couple decades to realize just how good music was in the 70s and 80s really was. You're right. They don't know how to write and arrange music like that anymore. It's nice to see young people react like we did back then. Steve Perry and Journey were on top of the world then. Perry's voice is immediately recognizable! There's no one like him! They don't call him the Voice for nothing. His soaring vocals are legendary! Also, the way he adds heartfelt emotions to his repertoire is iconic! I wish so much that music today was more like back then. 😢😂

Steve Perry has to be one of the greatest high male singers in all of music. They don’t call him “The Voice” for nothing. He also puts so much feeling and emotion in his vocals. You are correct. I related to this as a long haul truck driver. That was my calling. I was excellent at it. 2.5 million miles driving nights thru Canada and US. Unfortunately, as George Strait wrote "I lost a wife and gf along the way".
It's great to be tops in your calling..you only gotta give up what others have: wife waiting at home with dinner, time with kids, etc..and when you are done, you are done..and all you have left is a possibility to repair a relationship. I'm still hoping for that to resolve.

This song is so powerful seeing it done live. I did in July of 1983 on the "Frontiers" tour. 20,000, or how ever many are in the seats, singing along with their Bic lighter held high is a feeling that stays with you a very long time. Forty-one years now and counting.
This kinda became Journey's sound after Steve Perry joined the band in 1977. They were primarily a jam band prior to then with founding members Neal Schon and Gregg Rolle formed the band having come from Santana. When Gregg left and Jonathan Cain joined in 1980 they hit the stratosphere.

Fun Fact - 1. This video was taken from Journey's 1983 documentary 'Frontiers And Beyond'. Frontiers being the name of their album.
Fun Fact - 2. Keyboardist Jonathan Cain wrote this song for his then wife Tane, who later in the late 80's would end up in a divorce. You saw him staring at her picture.
Fun Fact - 3. While on tour Steve Perry would do 'add lives' in the songs. In this, the part where he sings 'we all need to the clowns to make us smile'. Perry would say 'Smile for me (wherever they were at, at that time). For me it was in Houston. So we heard ....'We all need the clowns to make us smile.......Smile for me Houston!!!' And smile we/I did!!!

Amanda, you should watch the "Journey: Behind the Music" documentary that VH1 did. It's on TH-cam, but it's funny how this band was put together, then shattered over time. They have a new singer, and still tour.... but the rift between Steve Perry (the singer here) and the rest of the band is one I don't think will ever be repaired. Journey is iconic, and was absolutely at their peak in the 80s. I know, I was there. Their music could be played on almost any genre of FM radio channels. Everything from "Light" stations, to "Metal" stations. About the only stations that wouldn't play them were talk radio, country, and classical music stations. Everything else.... they had at least one song that would get airplay.

I met my wife online, being apart is one of the reasons our relationship is so strong. We spent almost 2 years apart minus a handful of trips for a week here, a week there. Since the day we met, we have made sure that we talk to each other every day. In the 11 years since we met, 9 years since we were married, we have never had an argument. We make sure we always talk about what is going on in our heads. We are now both disabled so we are always pretty close to each other. I love it. A couple of other Journey songs you should do are the LIVE versions of Girl Can't Help It and then Ill be Alright Without You, both from the Raised on Radio album. Different concerts, but bith are great. Randy Jackson, from American Idol played bass on this tour.

Thank you for this reaction and your message! Thank you even more for pushing back against mental health stigma, especially in regards to BPD. My best friend, who is borderline and professor at a Canadian university, started her own podcast on BPD stigma and treatment options: Cynthia Gralla, "A Real Affliction: BPD, Culture, and Stigma." You might be interested in checking her out. Thank you one more time and keep up the wonderful things you're doing!

I would be in another state working for 4-6 weeks without coming home....but it was a fresh love affair every time I came home. It was tough, but it was also special. We ended up with a very close marriage that lasted a lifetime and loved each other very much. So there are two sides to this kind of situation. I would not trade our life together for all the tea in China.

During your first break, you made mention of how much more prevalent Love was in our music. What is interesting is that I did some research on this, hours upon HOURS of research, as a note, I also love psychology. There was a huge decline in that type of message once you hit the mid-2000s, not gone but significantly less and it has only decreased since then. While I won't say that all of the music from the 70s, 80s and 90s was that way, a lot of the music, if not about love or the loss thereof, there was a lot of music that was either reflective or about overcoming and pushing and striving, now the vast part of entertainment is about "me, me, me" or "gimme". I also looked at societal trends amongst younger people, granted social media has much to do with it, but as the love or persevering message decreased, the narcissistic tendencies increased. There are many factors but I really found this interesting. I've watched many reactors over the past several years and this is a common theme as they go through their journey (pun intended here) of how much our music centered around this and how they wish more music was like this.

One song you MUST react to "Leave the Light On" by Beth Hart; the story of living a suicidal life because of the abuse she endured as a child; her life is a testimony to living a "recovered life" daily.

For some reason, watching this makes me want to recommend that you listen to Of Monsters and Men (if you haven't already). Strong recommendations for I Of The Storm, and Thousand Eyes. Other favourites of mine are King and Lionheart, and Backyard.
I also want to see you react at some point to VNV Nation, they've got some incredible music as well. Carry You is a song that's helped many people I know through some very painful times.

If only for your own personal listening pleasures to enjoy an energy vibe in the message of the music & the voice in the song. I'd highly suggest you to check out all the obscure John Waite solo albums or the songs John wrote in The Babys & Bad English. Your first comments about post-trauma caused me to immediately pause the video. One of my favorite podcasters (Andy Stumpf of Cleared Hot) was the first person I heard say that. He doesn't use the disorder part of what's usually referred to as post-traumatic stress disorder. A disorder is an unnatural reaction to something. Traumatic stress causes very natural reactions to stresses that are beyond one's normal existence. Having reactions to things is not a disorder. Honestly, if you are *not* changed or affected by traumatic situations, *that* would be a disorder. Post-traumatic stress, yes. Disorder only if you allow it to control you.

Hello Amanda, a bit ago I would text you and you gave some great advice to me. Well I have a new challenge in my life, not sure if it's a mental health thing, but maybe a way hearing from you and all the subscribers. So yesterday 8/13, I've been diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. The news blew me away, I'm going Thursday to talk with my Doc and see what's best in terms of treatment. I'd be lying if I said I'm not scared, the biggest thing is knowing a did so little for the people who it, and poor kids. To me, this is mental, I want to forgive, amend, and let everyone know, it can be over at any time. Take a road less traveled, do what others wouldn't, and take time to care for yourself, we forgot who we are and why we are here! I don't know why I'm rambling, but still in shock about it. Amanda and this whole community, have been there for each other, stay true and know, one day one word or an act of kindness, could change a life, or prevent tragedy. Thank God for all of you, it's the humidity inside to make us strong, don't be selfish and if you a person in need, just acknowledge it, sometimes that's all it takes. Good people sense good people, your all amazing! 🥲

I’m deeply sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Receiving news like this is overwhelming, and it’s completely natural to feel scared and uncertain. It’s inspiring, though, to see how you’re reflecting on your life and seeking to make amends and live fully. You might enjoy the song Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw. Not that you are, there are a lot of treatment options at stage 2, but I suspect the message might resonate with you. Your message about taking a different path, caring for yourself, and acknowledging the importance of kindness is incredibly powerful. It’s a reminder that even in the toughest times, there is strength in vulnerability and the connections we make with others. The support of this community is here for you, and we’re all rooting for you as you navigate this journey. Remember, it’s okay to lean on others and to express what you’re feeling. Sometimes, sharing and receiving support can make a big difference. If you aren't already in our discord, here is the link: discord.gg/TUZ2vvma

You are absolutely correct about music in the '80s and even older having more soul, more depth and feeling. Even in this video it's really nothing more than a bunch of guys playing musical instruments on a stage and singing. So-Called music these days is at least as much about the show as it is the music. It's all auto-tuned computer generated with a dozen backup dancers and multiple costume changes, maybe a trapeze and some fireworks. All that does is distract from the music.
