The great David Schwarz sits down with Mike Sheahan on Fox Footy's Open Mike to have a chat about football, gambling and life. All rights go to Fox Footy and Fox Sports respectively.
One thing I love about Open Mike is when he is finished interviewing footballers like Schwarz, you walk away liking that person a lot more because they are no longer just a player on the field, but a real person and the fact they might wear the opposition's colours doesn't mean you can't appreciate them more. I now have so much respect for everything Schwarz has gone through.
Such a raw and deep honesty from this guy! I have nothing but a deep respect for any individual, who can openly lay out their vulnerabilities! Truly inspiring really
Great bloke. Loved it when he rag dolled Sam Newman. Apparently it genuinely messed him up, had to see a chiro and get treatment for a while afterward. Deserved everything he got.
Respect to Ox. Poor guy to see his dad murdered, then to play at the highest level in a tough era. He has beaten other things, gambling and the like. Good on him.
I really enjoyed this one. Shows that there is more to football than just kicking a ball. The lows can sometimes outweigh the highs. David's attitude through is very encouraging and I am sure everybody wishes him all the best in his continued recovery.
As a young child, I played junior football against David many times who played for Sunbury and that was after the death of his father. He was an emotional kid on the field.. I didn’t know of course what happened to this young talented kid and the pain he went through as a child. I haven’t had the best life and some of that is my own fault,. I have had gambling addictions problems since I was 15..i have just put a life time ban on myself.. I just have so much respect for the ox... even at 10 years old he was a freakish athletic talent on the footy field.. he would have been a great of the game without those injuries.. I also loved his commentary and his passion for the game.. you hear it in the 2008 gfinsl when my hawks won... I hope he’s in a good place now whatever he is doing. Good luck champion 👍
Thanks David for your wonderful honesty mate, especially about your gambling and your views on what the AFL does. As a school teacher and Sports Chaplain at a footy club, I see how it effects young people. 18-24 year olds are targeted and influenced the most, especially now with the ease of apps. Please continue to be vocal about the impacts of gambling.
I remember fondly watching him in 1994, and seeing someone who could be as good as Carey. Such a shocking run of injuries' though meant he never reached the heights. He was good still, but Melbourne's fortunes to winning a premiership ended when he had his 1st reco in 1995.

Possibly the best Open Mike I've seen. Huge respect for the Ox for turning his life around. Great bloke.

I’ve just read the Ox’s book ‘All Bets are Off’ …. twice! What a life story.
