I’m new to the trad thing and it wasn’t til I watched a Push archery video where he did same thing. Brought my groups in from 20in groups to 6in groups instantly. 20yd point on for me so bottom of chest for 12-15yds and top of chest for 25-28yds. Ended up trying an elevated rest for giggles and groups went down to 4in. Great explanation and good video!!!
Been shooting my recurve for 15 years now and i still shoot instinctive....i guess. I never consciously look at the tip of my arrow but have been told that i probably do. I shoot 3 under and hold just about the exact same place you do and have been pretty successful doing so. Thanks for the video.
No kidding I replaced 2 after that day Rediculous :-) Just trying to keep it real Sometimes those things happen Some people only want to show things when everything goes perfect I try not to hide those things
Thank you so much! This was a huge help for me. I’m 50 and shot compound for over 30 years and just switched to barebow recurve. I string walk but never new where I was supposed to aim. I do now and wow did it work. Thank You Sir!
The big reason why I like a fixed crawl is I can get that arrow shaft right under my eye and I can aim using the arrow and not so much the point. For me it's almost like looking down the rail of a rifle and focusing on the front sight where you don't see the peripheral under the gun. When the arrow is farther under my eye I have more of the sight picture below the arrow that I like and it throws me off. I also find it easier to aim high than to aim low on something. I use to gap with a 48 yard gap but then I moved my anchor higher and when I draw now the fletching rests on top of my nose and I hook my thumb knuckle behind my jaw and when I release I pivot with my knuckle so it's really hard to short draw. My point on is at about 19-20 with my current 580 grain arrow setup. Shortening my point on has been a major help. My old point on at 20 yards on a Blacktail was in the dirt and it's really hard to make an effective shot when you are guessing in the dirt. Great video.
That was a very good explanation of the set-up and how to use it. I shoot compounds but have now ventured out into recurve archery and was wondering how crawl sighting worked. Thanks for the good, useful info!
Thanks Trying it keep it simple explaining what works for me I spent too many years trying to make instinctive work when I really didn’t have the time to shoot everyday Or for that matter Every couple of weeks I just didn’t have the time I needed to put into it Thanks for watching
@@tsr_outdoors I just bought my first recurve bow. I used to shoot 30 years ago but life happened. I'm looking forward to trying your suggestions in my backyard. Keep the videos coming!
This is a great video, been thinking about this style of aiming for a while, I shoot instinctive but I have more bad than good and I've been shooting a long time, mostly not enough practice is my main problem i think, thanks again
This is same reason I switched Without enough time to shoot all the time I felt like I had more bad days than good And I wanted something simple as far as an aiming system This is the simplest I have found but it took a little bit to get used to her 3 under as I have been shooting split fingers since I was a kid
Yeah, I have dabbled with string crawling. After being an instinctive archer for years. I have settled on a lighter poundage and super heavy arrow. I now shoot 3 under. My point on is only 30 now, used to be right at 60. Much more manageable. I still use more instinct if it is 20 or under. Any further I pay more attention to the point.
I am a beginner in archery with a longbow and have difficulties with aiming. The bow is 37.5#@29 and it is a tad too heavy for me Interesting that you have chosen a fixed point for three fingers regardless of the distance you shoot from, is that correctly understood?
That’s close But you still need to aim a different elevations on the target for different yardages In the video I explain that 5-20 yards I am aiming at bottom of target with the tip of arrow being my front sight 25 yards the tip of arrow is dead on what I am aiming at And for 30 yards I am aiming with the tip of the arrow at the top of the back I hope this helps
Every bow is different and you will have to experiment But I have seen guys shot 1 piece bows this way with success Not sure if they were tuned correctly without being able to tune change the tiller on bottom limb I hope this helps
If you scout your spot and know where a few of the trees are around your stand, you can tell it a deer is in front of or beyond your 25 yard tree pretty easy.
I noticed on your finger guard it looked like you had some kind of measuring scale. Is that how you set the nock? Did you make the scale or did you find it somewhere?
No sir It’s the threads A lot of string walkers make marks on their threads for different ranges But I found my point-on for 25 by trial and error and just installed that lowest nock point I don’t measure/mark or use the threads for anything at all Thanks for watching
before, but after i changed the tiller on bottom limb bolts slightly. it was shooting just right again. it was slightly out of tune with crawl before letting bottom limb bolt out a few turns
A form of it But with that extra Nock point down the string it’s called a fixed crawl/ fixed walk / fixed creep. And therefore it works better than always “ walking “ up and down the string like true string walking which just never worked for me Thanks for watching
@@tsr_outdoors yes sir ,but my buddy's walk the string and set nocking points for yards,so fingers are in proper location and can find the yardage they need quicker more accurate!!! 👍
That’s where the tiller adjustment comes in You actually change the tiller on the bottom limb to make it weaker for tuning the arrow I mentioned this in my earlier video Sorry I didn’t mention it in this one
@@tsr_outdoors what happens if you shoot a different yardage? are you gonna adjust it for every shot? every shot requires a different poundage of pull to achieve the desired distance...
I guess you didn’t watch the video So my point in is 25 For 5-20 ( due to the arc of the arrow being changed From walking down getting the nock of the arrow up closer to my eye ) I aim to the bottom of the chest and the arrow hits in the center of the chest slightly above where I am aiming with the arrow For 25 the point goes right in the center of what I am aiming at For 30 I place the arrow tip on the top edge of the back of the deer and the arrow hits lower than I am aiming dropping right into the center of the chest Anything farther than that I let go So I basically use 3 diff site pictures for 5-30 yards I hope that makes more sense for you Sorry for any confusion

You didn't mention if you continue to anchor you index finger on your mouth or you changed your anchor point? Thanks, this makes a lot of sense.
Yes
Anchor does not change
Thanks. Also what is the draw weight of you bow? I figure that also changes the point
58 pounds at 28
Limbs are 55 pound limbs but they are actually a couple pounds heavier than labeled
@@tsr_outdoorsmine are only 50# but that's all I can handle. Any higher and I'd be shaking like a leaf!!!

How many of you can tell the difference between 25 and 30 yards in a hunting situation? I can't.
If you scout your spot and know where a few of the trees are around your stand, you can tell it a deer is in front of or beyond your 25 yard tree pretty easy.

Where do you anchor? On the side or under your chin?
I anchor corner of my mouth
Was arrows tuned to your bow before or after you set fixed crawl?
before, but after i changed the tiller on bottom limb bolts slightly. it was shooting just right again. it was slightly out of tune with crawl before letting bottom limb bolt out a few turns
So let's say your draw is 27 inches doesn't that decrease when your draw length when your 25 yard nock is about 2-3 inches below the arrow nock
no , not really ... maybe 1/4 inch but not enough to notice , because your anchor is still in the same location
And my crawl is about 3/4 inch below the arrow nock
Not 2 or 3 inches below it
That wouldn’t work being that far out of center / tiller
@@tsr_outdoors thanks for the info I shall try this
@@dukeitsk9624 I hope it helps
Still anchor in corner of mouth?
I ask the same question
Just gotta find where my 25 yard point nock is gonna be, then I'll nock that spot on the string!!! How much above Center is your original nock?
Are you shooting off the shelf using feathers?
yes
original nock has arrow just above level I think it was 1/8 inch
