  • In this final installment of Cody Butler's three part series on setting up and shooting a Hoyt Satori recurve bow, he talks about how to use the tip of the arrow as an aiming point. He prefers the "Fixed Crawl" aiming method over purely instinctive shooting. He also discusses the need to find a very consistent anchor point and why he doesn't use the corner of his mouth but rather anchors on his canine tooth. We would like to thank Cody for contributing this fun three part series.

Great video. My son shoots NASP in school. A lot of what you explained here will also help in NASP. As with most kids, even though Dad (me) tells him what he needs to do, it's not taken too seriously most times. Advice from a stranger generally goes farther. We'll be rewatching your video soon. Thanks!

Great great video. Started shooting barebow last year for fun, not hunting. A ton of good info.
I’m cross eye dominant too and am right handed, but fortunately a lefthand bow just naturally feels right for me. Works out good for handgun shooting too, as I hold gun in right hand but just shift slightly left for left eye sighting. And great info on anchor point. This past summer I also stumbled on to a tooth that is just the perfect consistent anchor.
Much thanks. Now I just need to shoot regularly.

Great stuff brother! Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this. Definitely going to look into traditional archery a little further. Good luck this season!

the common numbers i keep hearing are 1 inch lower for your fixed knock point. aim 6 to 8 inches low for under 25 yard. aim center for 25 and aim 6 to 8 inches high for 30 yards. everyone ive hear speaking about this has said the exact same or super similar to this topic. seems to be a pretty solid equation for 15 to 35 yards and obviously a laser at 25

Excellent video and instruction. The only reason I worry about using a fixed crawl is because it preloads the lower limb and could cause breakage on a self-made bow. I believe the fixed crawl is fine for laminated bows or more professional tillered bows. I am considering using the face walking technique though, as that will keep equal balance on both limbs when pulling the string back.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the comment and the support.

I’ve got the same cross dominance. It’s definitely got its own challenges.

Great video “instinctive” never worked with me. Gap shooting is the way to go.

What tiller did you end up with for your fixed crawl?

This is some very good information..! If you are looking for more info on Barebow, then check out Jake Kaminski's TH-cam channel. He is a 2 time Olympic Silver Medalist and has a myriad of videos on setup, tuning, and form for Barebow shooting. His anchor point for Barebow has me breaking nocks at 20 yards. This is great info here not taking that away from you the other channel has further information if anyone is interested.

    Hello Cody,
I really like your videos and you picked a very nice bow but I’m confused, the first bow set up you said it was a 17” riser = 58” and the second video the literature says 19” riser. Im fixing to order me one but I will wait for your response.

Go with what Cody said. I have been writing the descriptions so I may have gotten it wrong on the second one. Good luck.
