Fun fact! They actually did have a high-production value Patreon-exclusive series at one point, called Making Watcher! Then they just uploaded the videos for free on TH-cam anyway. Oh, but they had a low-production value series called Watcher Weekly Plus, that actually remained Patreon-exclusive! Until this week, when they canceled it. Yeah, Watcher's been mismanaging their Patreon for a long time.

    • @5autumndream

That is so … they were like we can make people pay for it first and actually see if we put it on TH-cam for free w ads we can make more money! It’s a betrayal to patrons.

The merch costs 80$ for a basic looking sweatshirt and 40$ for a basic white tshirt. That's INSANE.
Plus the pateron which brings in as much as 60k a MONTH.
Plus ads of 15-30k per ad.
The patron was being mismanaged to hell. They could have made their pateron better and put the after show on there and other certain exclusives. While uploading the main stuff and everyone would be happy.
They had more than enough if they budgeted.
They could have downsized the office, they didn't need like 30 employees.

It's amazing how dumb these corporate execs can be. Even in a small company. My company went full time remote when the pandemic hit. We've been that way ever since. Sold off a bunch of buildings, dropped our leases. Until our new CEO got a bug up his ass that we need to all be in the office. So they spent millions buying new real estate, renovating offices to get it ready to bring everyone back to the office. But all we've heard over the last year is "the budget is tight, we need to cut costs". Which is why they laid off a bunch of people. But they're still going forward with the back too office bullshit.

Do they have toxic mold in their headquarters or they are smoking something strong? I want to know who pitched this idea and how it was calculated for them to think it will be a good move? They had 2,93 mil subscribers and "only" 12k payed for Patreon. Why they thought the rest will now pay when they weren't even willing to be Patreon members?
The way it was executed is another thing. People wouldn't probably be as angry if it was done slowly over time and in a different manner. But they tried to bite too much too quickly. To be honest it sucks to see Ryan and Shane fall from grace.

Loved these guys since buzzfeed. Ive consistently rewatched the buzzfeed stuff but barely watched the new channel. Watching the first few videos of them setting up the office at the start of Watcher gave me bad vibes. The base audience came from them sitting at a desk talking with text thrown on the screen. We werent there for over the top set designs. We liked them because of how well they played off each other. They lost all the charm when they moved channels. I dont see how anyone would be willing to pay to watch them move yet again to a whole new website and try to up production/sets even more. Whats ironic is them talking about upping the quality. They have thrown what i would assume is an ungodly amount at production/sets and the actual quality has dropped significantly. And no one is actually there for the food videos.

I wonder what would oompaville talks about this because it just interesting because Charlie called all three out on how the f their channel size could not support their 30+ employees with all the sponsorships, TH-cam Adsense, patreon, merch sales to fund their big projects
Like if you don’t have the money to fund your projects. Then it is time to cut them off to save them financially. Cut the extra content through a paywall. Cut the fat where the series aren’t breaking 1mil views and there you’ll save yourself some money.
The way Steven says, “6.99” is nothing and it came out of his mouth tells us all that he wants money on his failing food series while Ryan and Shane are the ones who hold their own.

  • @sarahann74

I think they’ve flown too close to the sun. I think it’s all about them being stubborn and not content with the current size of their company. I think they want to be seen as more legitimate by copying what they’ve learned from buzzfeed but they’re just naturally not there yet so they’re trying to speed up that process but this was not the right move. One of the reasons they stated for leaving TH-cam was that they felt stifled by having to appeal to advertisers. I just think that they didn’t consider their audience in this decision obviously it’s a simple business plan and possibly even a natural transition for them but they wouldn’t be here without their audience and they’ve decided to be greedy and selfish and it’s backfiring now. In late stage capitalism when money is involved things get complicated obviously it would be ideal for this to work for them but in this economy advertisers are sadly just not something that you can avoid when it’s become so ingrained in everyone’s lives now. In a world where people value convince over most things a youtuber trying to stream their content is nearly an impossible feet. TH-cam is convenient free entertainment and there’s always more out there. The entertainment business is so saturated already that it’s incredibly hard to find something special enough to consistently pay for.

Personally the worst part to me is that I will never be able to watch their show again, since they shown their true colors. How dellusional you have to be to think "anyone and everyone can afford 5,99$". It's purely disgusting. For some it means a month salary, like how out of touch are they?? I don't think they're making as much money as people think. 5,900 paying Patrons, most of whom are probably paying $5/month, so they probably make roughly $30,000/month off of Patreon. They have 25 employees not including the three main guys and the two they just brought in, but just those 25, if they make $3,000/month in California, cost probably $75,000/month for just payroll, not including all the other things employers have to pay like unemployment insurance. Their more recent videos are getting over 1 million views, but scroll down on their videos past the last month or so and you'll see more of their videos are lucky to get 500,000 views than are getting anywhere near 1 million. They mention not being offered as much from sponsors, probably because the more Steve-centric videos have driven down their per-video view average, so they're probably on the lower end of sponsor payout, plus those sponsors are probably specifying that they want their ads on the higher view videos, not the lower, but it's the lower view videos that are costing the most money (eating $10,000 meals kinda stuff), so without those sponsor ads, those videos lose money. Easy way to fix these issues is to stop making the unpopular videos and cut staff, but those unpopular videos are the babies of the CEO, so, yeah, that ain't happening.
