Richie was the honest virtuous man in his profession, but a terrible human in his personal life. Frank was the honest virtuous man in his personal life and the terrible human in his profession. And it was almost destined for them to collide, then become friends. They were a perfect match
The choir singing 'Amazing Grace' in the background delivers the best choir rendition of the hymn i've ever heard, the delivery is out of this world. I have watched this u-tube clip so many times and keep rewinding the film when it comes to the first 1 minute 41 seconds of this clip when the film is showing on TV just to hear this version of the hymn, damn, i once rewound it like 20 times. The Acapella and harmony kills me....it's BEAUTIFUL.

Olivet Baptist Church choir - the same church that was shown in the movie, located in Harlem, NY. They also sung after the wedding scene in the movie.

Russel Crowe's character in this movie kills me. They make him out to be Johnny Law, and after the events of the movie, he goes on to become a criminal defense attorney, pretty hard left hahaha

Denzel is a perfectionist in his craft. He made me study Malcom X after I saw the movie. He made me Google and TH-cam Frank Lucas. He had me mesmerized in Glory. He's given the most memorable commencement speeches ever done (you have to Google it, amazing). His awards acceptance speeches are filled with warmth and wisdom. He's truly the greatest American actor. Ever. Here's why: Look at how he carries himself, treats other's and cares for his family. Compare that to the insane Marlon Brando or the incredible boring Robert DeNiro. Denzel has class like no other. He's an inspiration to those with no direction and a true American citizen who will always be considered the GOAT.

I always liked the way the two detectives were gentle and polite with Frank's mother and wife when they ushered them back into the church, the African American detective even addressed her as "Mother Lucas". Yes they were cutting Frank off so he couldn't run, but they were also making sure innocent people weren't in the line of fire.

Could have made a huge spectacle with sirens and whatnot but instead simply closes the door behind frank and makes it clear that it's over while showing enough respect to buffer his family from seeing frank taken away in cuffs. Something like that would have stuck in the mind of frank who was very much about the image someone portrays and the concept of respect, even between enemies.
God I love this scene so much. The camera work and pacing, the choir music, the helpless feeling you get as the camera pans around to the surrounding blockade. The cut from Frank to the police blockade as the choir sings “I once was lost, but now am found”. Perfection.

That bugged me, too. Why couldn't they just have another actor do that court scene, with Russell Crowe present in the background? That's like a couple of lines of dialogue max. The rest of the movie would've been unaffected.

While the movie deserves all the accolades it got and is still getting, remember this story is based for the most part on the life of Frank Lucas. Lucas was THE American Gangster. His drug "business", "destroyed more black lives than the KKK." That's what he did to his own people. He died in 2019 at the age of 88. Yes, In the end he was "sorry" for what he did, but seems like it was little to late.
Denzel was perfect in this movie, no one would have done a better job. He played his role to perfection. Great movie. Very Underrated.

While the movie deserves all the accolades it got and is still getting, remember this story is based for the most part on the life of Frank Lucas. Lucas was THE American Gangster. His drug "business", "destroyed more black lives than the KKK." That's what he did to his own people. He died in 2019 at the age of 88. Yes, In the end he was "sorry" for what he did, but seems like it was little to late.
