I watched an interview with the real Richie, in which he basically disowned the movie's portrayal of him. He was very careful to point out that the success of the operation to bring down Frank Lucas was due to the hard work of the entire team, and he said he was embarrassed that the movie basically made it look like he did it all by himself. A very modest man, as well as a very tough and honest one.

Although I know almost nothing about basketball (though played a bit in High School), some 32+ years ago (man, I'm getting old ...), something I did learn is the 'Hot Hand Fallacy': just because you sunk a few 3-pointers, doesn't mean you will all game, and your team still may end up losing, right up to the final second, from a basket from damn well near the half-court line.
Besides, casinos hate to lose, hence the expression 'The House always Wins'. You have to be something special to run one ... and bankrupt it ... unless, of course, you are washing a heck of dirty money through it ... and even then ...
Perhaps the only games that are not rigged is either the Roulette table (and even then, the wheel can be rigged, using a tiny magnet in the ball, and an electro-magnet in the wheel itself, that can be turned on and off), and No-Limits, Seven Card Texas Hold 'em, where the pot can get seriously high, as in tens of thousands high, especially in Tournaments ...
In everything, the trick is to learn when you've gained/won enough, to quit and not get too greedy, just in case the House wants its money back ...
... so "quitting while you're ahead, is not the same as quitting" is sage advice ...

That entire interrogation scene is classic. The common bond between the two merges in that final scene. Lucas represents progress for rising out of poverty in a market run by rival Italians. Richie is an honest cop when corruption was widely accepted. He is willing to convict criminals even against law enforcement. Two people most hated in their field of work because they both represent a change from the status quo.
Richie: I've got a line of people wanting to testify against you, it stretches out the door and around the block.
Lucas: Monzano family has nothing to do with me.

Did anyone notice the way he put Trupo away as the last one to give up? In my opinion he did it to kill him. That is, he wanted to kill him before he got caught and his mother stopped him and he made Trupo see his associates getting caught one after another and Trupo realized that the circle is getting close and he didn't want to go to prison bc he'd have the hardest life in there, so he killed himself and by doing so Frank achieved what he was trying to achieve. Amazing!

Denzel is such a great actor. You can see the way he gives the performance depth and realism by knowing when to listen, when to express anger, when to hide his feelings. I can see Frank thinking, calculating his moves, and every time he finds a way out, Richie is standing there in front of him, waiting for him. Richie is smart, he got it all figured out, and Frank has to accept the deal & surrender to this knowing that it's the only way for him to win. We can see Frank's ego, his cleverness, his wounds, his aspirations all in this one scene, because Denzel knows when to speak, or listen, or react.

A legend of a film, that should be known even more, and receive more credits for its dynamics. Such an amazing storyline, characters, soundtrack and led by two legendary actors, Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe who brought so much emotion, and action to it. What makes the film even greater is the many lessons and lines that are brought up, and what's even greater is how it's based on a true story. Honestly, worth watching no matter what. Personally, I would love to see an all-in Task Force, combining the FBI, DEA, and ATF, called, say, Operation Clean Sweep, whose targets are not 'just' the street level thugs, but those whom are in control, as far up as it goes, using the full powers of the USAG, the DoJ, and Treasury ... it will take decades, and a specific prison (identical to ADX Florence) may have to be built, but if a President-Elect is damn serious, especially about crime and corruption, then no half measures should be taken ...
