    Outstanding partner to your previous ones, Patrick. If your ears were burning recently, it was because Jeanne McPherson (of Mountain AirDance) was praising these videos as we flew back from a mountain training flight out of Helena recently. And she teaches exactly that kind of steep descent that you share here and in the earlier video. Superb videography, too. Congrats!

    Great video! When my primary instructor taught me this it seemed weird... But it works so well to nail that spot!
    The coolest thing I noted was the variance in airspeed per weight (AOA constant.) He, my primary, also taught me to put the airplane in landing configuration and test the CURRENT stall speed at altitude. Add my 5% and that was my approach speed. Anyone else taught this method? What were you taught to determine approach speed?

    I am flying an Exp. PA12 160HP Lycoming with a constant speed prop, 35" AK Bush wheels, AOSS, and Doug Kellers Perfomance Fowler Flaps. When landing on short off field areas (I would not call them strips because they are not) I typically am flying nose high, full flaps, power as needed to keep aloft adjusting power as to drop in and at the last minute rotate forward driving the wheels to the ground, dump the flaps and brake as hard as needed to stop. I find this approach works so much better for me. I have decreased my landing distance tremendously with this technique, and have damaged my tail wheel far less than when I was typically flaring as before.

      Being comfortable is pretty important. If it works for you then I would say thats what matters. As for damaging the tailwheel, we have been doing this a long time in a lot of planes and never damaged a tailwheel so perhaps you had a different technique?

    Very good video. I fly helicopters, the same rules apply to us when we have an engine failure. But we only get one shot at it.

      @@alexj1757 Have you ever been in a plane that had an engine fire? My guess is you have not. You can simply pull off the road and stop in your Mazda. Not quite that simple in an airplane.

    Thank you for such an educational video. Question: Since you set your nose attitude on approach as a constant, and you control your glide path the with throttle, What is your descent rate? It must be much greater than the usual nose-level descent for a wheelie landing.

    Hey bud, you got that down pat imo. All sounds so easy but get on the controls in a crosswind try to avoid an obstacle that just happened to jump in your windscreen and thinking just don't happen; practice, practice and more practice and new challenge then the same again, till those wings become strapped to your back and they become part of you. Like the video and also love the cub...........cheers and you still have to fly safe!

    is there any vectoring when you use flaps down ie. redirecting propwash downwards or is it just lift gained dependent on forward velocity?

    Just take a look at the dance routine on the controls from the inside shots. I use to watch Crows landing on the top of a telegraph pole, now that is how to land short, they have the flare sorted.

      Helicopters do Autorotation same as birds..but they roll 20-100 feet forward...
      . I admire my Blue Jays..they pluck the peanuts off my hand, back off a foot while turning 180 and power away..You feel the wind they pushed down..

    Land brakes on with a touch of forward pressure at touch down? Seems like there'd only be so many times you would get away with that, even in a Maule with soft brakes, but who knows. Cool spots you're going in to!

    Anything you can add to the idea of using prop for STOL?
    I just saw a Maule with a turboprop today here on youtube.
    I've been thinking how cool it would be able to put a TP100 on a Maule M7.

      Yep pretty much! I learned to fly in sandals in the heat of Texas so control obviously isn't an issue, when flying in a hostile area I wear boots (dress to egress blah blah blah) but when cruising the local hood with plenty of places to land and cell phone reception sandals are my go to. The bottle was put there on purpose to demonstrate the deceleration at max braking. In order for it to become dangerous I would have already had to flip over since it's a taildragger it's pretty tough get it to roll uphill!

    I would caution landing with brakes applied. This can cause a nose over! You can always land shorter than it takes to take off again so why push the envelope? Is it really worth stopping that short or landing in this spot. Is the Risk worth the Reward?

    I imagine retracting flaps also reduces nose down moment, allowing a bit more braking force with conventional gear. Not so much about the weight on the wheels if the elevator can't hold the tail down.

    I would have liked to have seen video this when I started to fly a Champ back in the seventies but of course the we did'nt have all the internet info that is available now. I did OK though, my instructor was an ex RCAF instructor with thousands of hours in an AT6

      I will try to look it up. It was a song I bought from pond 5 I believe just for this series. Off the top of my head I don't recall its name. But it is just a stock song I do know that.

      Backcountry Aviation I'll have to wait until I get onto a computer, my phone does not support that feature (that I'm aware of anyway). Thank you for your videos, I've found, and watched, a few of them. Although I'm not a pilot, I love the bush planes, and someday I'd like to become a pilot before I become too old to do so.

    Those who use flats will be cut short with problems when the flaps do not work
    I would always use a side slip as you can always descend at a much steeper and controlled rate.
    Forward roll is usually less, and I also noticed a lot of these taildragers would bounce on their front wheels to much, Not allowing a proper shorter roll out to put the plane down in the shortest roll.

      Some really colorful ones with reflectors. It was really hard to get pedal shots in the cub. In the maule we could light the footwell, but in the cub it was tougher so I wore those bright ones to help. Can’t recall the brand. Sorry.

      more wing=more drag as well as more lift. It is a matter of finding the best combination of lift, drag and power to weight ratios.

    I heard you make a comment about retracting flaps being distracting for students on touchdown - I assume you're an instructor? If so, I'd love to get some bush training with you, plus, make some videos :)

      Small world, I just watch some of your videos. I was the president and chief flight instructor of the Univeristy of Texas flying club in the late 90s/early 2000. In fact my wife believes she was your instructor briefly. We still have a house in Austin and visit regularly. So I see some opportunity in the future.

      Back then there weren’t too many places. So I just slowly taught myself. Nowadays there are tons of places. I recommend summit aviation in Bentonville, Tacaero or promark aviation

    Looks like under inflated tires, but I guess cushion is king, and caution of course.

      These types of tires only have enough pressure to stay on the rims. Softens the landing bounce, increases floatation and smooths out the big rocks and bumps. Backcountry flying is an art form that varies wildly from airport operations. If you fly, lower your tire pressure and start landing on the grass....it will open up a whole new world of exhilarating flying!

      I caught that as the vid. went on... I spoke too soon. I have always seen adding power on flare as a correction, I guess it depends what one is flying. I was the factory pilot for the Air Cam, and made many off field landings, including out west. Landed on a golf course one... My typical roll was 250'. (indicated stall was 35 mph)

      Not at all. I flew 1,500 hours on prototypes #2 & production prototype (3#) w/ 582s, 914s & 912Ss. I did spin testing, flew both to 18,000' and flew over Mt. Whitney (amomg other peaks). I built 2 in my garrage, the 1st w/ 912Ss & the 2nd w/852s. I sold the first 64 kits, and did 7 or 8 maiden flights and checked out countless pilots. I've flown 'Cams in Mexico, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Columbia, U.A.E. & 38 States. I flew with Chuck Yeager & Dave Hinson (FAA Administrator at the time). I'm in Italy to test a new LSA model, and just got back from Friedrichshafen, Germany for the GA Expo.

    NIce video, but not only are the physics ovesimplified, they are plain wrong. What you're looking for is the kinetic energy of the landing plane, which equals mass x speed[squared]/2. The effect of this fact is not so different from your conclusion, apart from making it even more important to bleed off speed. A good pilot should know basic physics.

    Hopefully he's got more than just flip flops in the airplane in case he's got to walk 50 miles some place. Styles one thing being prepared is another.

      I was at kedc, so it wouldn’t be much of a walk to the FBO....Texas in the summer can get a little warm.
