    As a person with very curly hair, it blows my mind that a famous beauty expert is talking about styling curls. I'm young but even I remember the days of Lorraine Massey's book being my only resource and every stylist in town wanting to straighten my hair on the way out of the salon. I am so happy with this trend in the beauty industry yet I can only hope that curl and texture acceptance continues far past this trend. Let's make it happen!! Also from Queer Eye to Over the Top to this channel JVN is creating such incredible content and I love it!!!

      Yesss. I was 35 when I found a hairdresser that knew what to do with my super curly hair. My mum got my childhood hairdresser to just cut all my hair off bc no one knew what to do with it! When I went to a hairdresser to get it straightened after I’d grown it all out, she complained that it took too long (and it looked TERRIBLE). FINALLY us curly haired people are being taught and encouraged to embrace and love our natural hair!!!! 👏👏👏

      This is exactly what I was thinking. Also, the little side-eye crinkle, skeptical look he gives his hair while he is spraying the texturizing spray... That is the look everyone has made at their hair in the middle of attempting to push that 75% perfect style be 95% perfect... A little scolding to say, you better not make me wish I had stopped at 75%.

    I hope everyone that is "jealous of your curls" watches this and the effort we have to go through.... this is why I 95% of the time messy-bun it.

      Yeah there are a ton of extra steps here. I just wash my hair, put in product, pin the top back and go. After years of struggling with my curls while everyone had stick straight hair, now it's my time to take advantage!

    I'd love a video for a total beginner's guide on adding some variety to everyday looks? (eg straightening, curling, plaits, buns). I literally only know a basic ponytail and look the same everyday lol. I find a lot of style how-to videos intimidating and complicated tbh so would love a really simple one 🙂

    • @lauraj1725
      @lauraj1725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Best way to protect your curls during night is using a satin or silk cap, you look like and old lady, but your curls survive the night. Or also, you can use a satin pillow case 🙂

    • @charjack2
      @charjack2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes to the satin cap but you can also do a pineapple ponytail on the top of your head. Use a scrunchie or I use cut up sections from the ankle of an old tube sock. Doesn't crease the hair like a hair tie.

    • @lfcoolg
      @lfcoolg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I have the same texture as Jonathan and pineapples have never worked for me. I recently discovered a method where you use 4 small clips to avoid crown flattening and it's changed my life. This is the video: th-cam.com/video/M-Ob-EVVjm8/w-d-xo.html and the method I'm referring to is at about the ten min mark

    • @ElmoGrace1988
      @ElmoGrace1988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What Lily has said. Medusa clipping is the only way mine stay good for multiple days. Similarly my hair is a similar length and texture to Jonathan’s. I find pineapples or buffs stretch waves out too much and bonnets allow for too much movement.

    The Pandemic meant I had to figure out my curls cuz I went 15 months without a cut! I am now a curly addict and LOVING my hair. This is a fantastic overview video. Anyone who wants to go deeper, figure out your curl type (I'm a 3A, it goes from 1-4, ABC within each number) and find youtubers who are exclusively curly hair experts. There are many out there, even down to high vs low density hair and more. I had NO idea I could have such predictably awesome curls.

      Some tips that JVN didn't cover here that maybe you, with straight hair, never had to thought about: curly hair gets detangled ends to roots (don't get that comb or brush and push it down from the roots). Work the knots little by little. Try to not brush it dry as well -- that makes the hair look frizzy and can break it too --, but if your daughter hair gets very tangled, use a lil bit of oil, work through the bigger knots with the oil in your hands first, then come in with the brush. It's normal for the hair to get a bit "crunchy" after drying with mousse or cream on it; wait until it's COMPLETELY dry (either naturally or with the blow dryer), then come back with your hands with a lil bit of oil (or using an old soft cotton tshirt as a glove) and scrunch (that crunching motion JVN showed in the video) the hair until there's no crunchiness left. It's also very normal for people to have different kinds of curls and waves in their heads, so there might be some parts of her hair that are curlier, others are wavier, some can even be kinda straight! If she has a lot of different textures it might be a good idea to apply more or less product on that part of the head (more for curlier, less for straighter). I know this is a lot but your daughter will thank you in the future for helping her with her curls! :)

      Yes mama! I was in the same boat, really curly and my mum had pin straight hair - so I didn't learn how to do my hair properly until I was in my 30s.
      The above tips are GREAT! And also check out The Curly Girl Method, there's a ton of information out there on how to style and manage curly hair of all textures and at all price points and skill levels.

    Aghh! I literally have been waiting for Jonathan to talk about curls for soo long! Love this. But I would also really love it if we could see a whole cycle of curly hair. I feel like I'm quite confident with how I can style my hair straight out of the shower, but after the first day things start to look quite sad haha, and I haven't really found great ways to bring the curls back to life which ends up in a bun or a hat over them and then they are ruined, so I have to take showers more often than I would like.. Anyways, thanks for a great video Jonathan. I'm glad you're finally over on youtube :)

    I have to admit, as someone with naturally curly hair, I was v skeptical. I've watched all of Queer Eye and seen JVN's Instagram, so I figured if anyone would know what he's talking about, it'd be him, but I was pretty sure I hadn't seen him with curly hair somehow. Had no idea his was naturally curly too! Honestly, the routine he does isn't super dissimilar from mine, though my hair is SO thick that it'd take hours if I spent an equivalent amount of time on it, if that makes sense. 😅 Like he clipped up his hair into two layers... Mine would be maybe 5-7 hahaha. and it would take maybe an hour to dry with a hairdryer.
    Needless to say, I've been waiting for this video since every single episode of Queer Eye ever 😭🧡 thanks JVN

    A couple years ago half my hair fell out due to stress and health. We chopped it short to try to take the weight off, I tried to leave my scalp alone because it was in pain, I ate way more protein to fit my lifestyle, and I researched the curly girl method and also for what the women of Color were doing for their hair. It saved my scalp. My hair over time got used to my natural waves and I started sprouting a couple real curls. I’m so happy being this way with my natural texture and my scalp isn’t in pain anymore. I do get slapped by non- curly girls (never guys) for saying curly girl method. To them I don’t have curly hair. But the actual curly girls are so kind and do agree that my hair is curly. I hope people become more accepting of the curly life. Everyone’s hair is so different and personal. It’s about appreciating what you have and loving your neighbor.

    This is pretty similar to my strategy. I actually diffuse with clips on the roots if I'm looking for volume, though. I also put a layer of gel over my mouse to make the style last longer.
    As others have mentioned, if you haven't tried a Denman brush, DO IT!❤️ I don't use it most days, but when I'm putting in the time to look extra cute it's my best tool!

Had some hideous haircuts chosen for me in elementary school 😂 This video is 50/50 stuff I'm doing and stuff I didn't know about, so it's both validating and educational for me, thank you 😁 I have to admit btw that I use some kind of leave-in moisturizer at basically every stage of drying/styling my hair once I'm out of the shower, like, it might be slightly excessive 🤣 But it might also be rescuing my hair because I started bleaching it a few years ago 👀😅

      I use the sebastian curl cream, I rarely ever use mousse, so my curls are a bit on the softer side. I put my hair up in a *very* loose bun at the top of my head when I go to sleep. then in the morning I lean over the bathtub, flop my hair over, and I have a spray bottle with water and a liiiiiiiiiiittle bit of my curl cream in that I just mist my hair with and re-scrounge the curls ever so carefully.

    I use leave in conditioner and/or hair oil on wet hair, like just stopped dripping hair, brush it through, and run my finger horizontally to break up the large chunks of pattern from brushing it. If I want volume, I hang my head upside down and wrap my hair in a towel or tshirt like a durag. Wait for it to dry and then unwrap and shake/poof.

    Watching you embrace your natural curl pattern more and more has made me so so happy! When I was a little girl I never saw people with hair like mine and I had no idea how to style it, so I didn’t learn to love my hair until I was well into my 20s. Love this journey for you JVN

    I would love a video about how to completely air-dry curly hair. Is there any way to keep it from completely flattening on top? Are the curly-hair products different for air-drying? I find it really hard not to tuck it behind my ears while it dries.😫

    • @maddiechera4708
      @maddiechera4708 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I learned from Curly Girl Handbook to use small clips to pin up a crown of curls at the top of your head so they set that way as they dry. But lately I’ve also found that I can take a big butterfly clip and do a high volume, loosely cinched half up/half down to get some of that effect. The latter technique has the benefit of looking semi-normal if I have to leave the house before it’s completely air dried (norms against wet hair in public be damned--it’s summer, anyway!). Not sure if this explanation is clear, but might help you not tuck while wet.

      Something I’ve found helpful is “plopping” my damp hair with a cotton t-shirt (google for articles/vids on how to tie it up!). I use a microfibre head wrap when I initially come out of the shower. After I finish drying off/moisturizing/etc I’ll let my hair down, rake in product and then plop it on top of my head. I’ll keep it up for as long as it takes to get ready, or longer if I’m not leaving the house right away or at all :)

      Yes! I have this problem too and have found the solution for me: clips on the top of my head while drying! They’re two-pronged and metal and I use maybe 8 around the crown of my head to lift the flat parts up while drying. Got them off Amazon. Also what’s helped is tilting my head down and toward my knees when applying conditioner. I then hold the ends in my hand to keep in the conditioner and rinse out the rest of my hair with my head DOWN still. Then when ready to towel, I use my Tee-Owl which i swear by for my long thick curly locks!

    Thanks so much; love your tips. My sister got the super thick, ringlet type hair from my mom. My fine, wavy hair seemed to only look its best in summer with added humidity until I started paying attention to moisture and using products. I am learning to better care for my long tresses and voila, I can have pretty curly hair now, even in winter! Who knew?! I know your tips are greatly improving the overall condition and behavior of my hair. Love your info, appreciate your style!!!!

    I have long hair down to my waist, with mild body/waves, and I was skeptical about this. I was thrilled to have this treatment work!!! OMG!!!
    I've tried it a few times. I'm even able to brush it out when it's dry, then re-wet it down and reactivate the curls. This is really important because I play music outside at festivals and having a "rain sturdy" hairstyle has been a problem. I'm VERY happy to say this will solve a TON of prep problems.
    Thank you Jonathan! You ROCK on so many levels. This will save me a TON of time, and I'm so happy with it! :: HUGS ::

    Hi JVN! First of all i love you and thanks for the abundant content of curly hair care you produce in your vlogs. Hope you could read this one and help us out. Daily cleansing/shampooing of hair is recommended or even required especially when you just came outside as an extra precaution during this pandemic. But we all know that’s not good for a curly hair or any hair in general. How do we take better care of our curly hair especially during this pandemic when we are extra when it comes to cleanliness and disinfection. Thank you and i love you so much!
