Dude, I stumbled across a couple of months ago and I am thoroughly enjoying all the videos I have watched. Great stuff. Oh, I have been fly fishing for over 40 yrs and I still learn some neat stuff from you. Please keep em coming.
Thanks for shaing so much information! Fly fishing and fly selection is so tough for beginners. It's taken me a few years just to come to grips with the basic flies. It'd also be great to learn what colours/patterns to use for conditions - e.g. morning/mid-day/afternooon, clear or dark water, seasons, etc.
Yeah it can be overwhelming for sure. I really don’t select flies based on conditions - more what I think they might be feeding on/what I see on the water etc.
One thing I learned in over 30 years of personal and comercial fly tying is that it isnt the fly that catches the fish, is how you fish it. As a experiment I tied up a bunch of the most colorful gaudy flies with my imagination. No rhyme nor reason to it, just tossed materials together with lots of shiny tied in. None of them looked the same. I called them death dealer. Sold several dozen of them and had rave reviews over how effective they were. That's the day I gave up commercial tying. Now I just tie for myself and my buddies. I still get asked for the death dealers. Lol. The lesson here is, damm near anything will work if fished right and with confidence. Love your flies btw. Regards, Canada Hank
Glad to see this. I only asked to see your favourite flies not your whole bag! Seriously though cool to see . Think going to have to try and copy that 101, or try to, not doing much else fishing wise! Have to send you some North Country Spiders when this stuffs over. Heck might even bring them myself! Keep safe, keep strong and take care of yourself
Awsum selection G.Cant wait to use the 101 and pole position in the near future.Cant wait to get back out on the Tongariro bro.Take care man and thanks for sharing your knowledge,👍😷
I have been watching you and G for a long time and it always amazes me that 16 is tiny to you. Fished 8 hours on my local tailwater and the largest fly I threw was an 18 jujubee. Slow skinny water a spooky fish but 20 inch fish on a size 20 always works the glutes
Trippin On Trout All good. Working and rolling with the changes as they come. Just wish I had a bit more time for some fishing! On an aside, I have started tying my own flies. I’ll use you guidance...small brown, green, red black or smaller brown, green, red or black.
Cheers Alex Very good video,I’m a beginner to the sport and I find the amount of flies on offer a bit baffling at times this simplifies the whole process greatly as does your advice on all sorts of trout related equipment and skills, keep up the good work.
Estimated value of your fly collection? Of your top ten how many can you tie? Thanks for all your videos!! So well done and entertaining. If I have a tough day on the river it’s always a bonus to come home and watch you catch a bunch of beauties!
@@TrippinOnTrout you can get them in brown trout, and rainbow colours, and many more imitations works very well, I buy mine on ebay check it out pal 👍🏻
Looks like a lot of bead head nymphs. How often do you hang up on the bottom? Ever tried a drop shot rig with unweighted flies above the weight? Do enjoy your videos and good looking rivers and countryside.
I lose some flies here and there but nothing too bad. I like the way I set rigs up coz it’s so quick and easy to change and doesn’t tangle much, unless I’m casting like a retard!
cool stuff hay how about a ff for when you catch that fish of a life time and not keen on killing it but want a mount of i,t what do we do on the photos kind of thing aye ,,, keep up the good work aye bro
Nice to see inside your fly boxes Alex, I take 4 fly boxes with me as well so I reckon it must be normal. At least you only have a couple of foam beetles, I've got about 15 in my dry box(I've got a foam beetle problem). Nice to see you've got plenty of lube too for those long days on the river..... lmfao Keep safe and sane Alex!! ATB Chris
Great content mate. Slick & useful. I'm in the market for some new polaroids... what colour tint do you use/recommend? I'm SI based - fish both gin clear & tannin stained waters. Thanks. Might make a good video too.
Not much different than ive got in my boxes. Royal wullfs and stimulators, stones and damsels, choronimids, streamers. Glo bugs and beads. heading out to some stillwater this weekend. Big rainbows starting to get frisky. Thanks for the post.
can you fish in your lockdown? thankfully the great state of maine is allowing us to fish! its all stocked trout in the coastal rivers at the moment, the natives are still under the ice waiting for the smelt run to start. t-minus 1 month...
Under our state of emergency here in NZ, we've been asked to stay at home unless our journeys are essential, and if we go somewhere for exercise we stay local. The national Fish & Game authority, and the national rescue organisation have appealed to fishers to not go into any situation where they may need to be rescued and therefore compromise the rescuers' isolation. Most boat ramps are closed and chained off on lakes and along the coast. So Alex could wander down to his local beach at Lake Taupo for a flick, but it'd be frowned upon if he went too far afield.
Like Thor_68 said, we are pretty much confined to home. To be fair, I feel like even if I fished along the lake front, it would be frowned upon. Right now, it’s about sitting right and hoping we get on top of it enough by the end of the month to be allowed back out there
Like a closer look at the Peacock Pointer.Could not find it on Cat 3.Looks a bit like what we call a ''cruncher'' here a very popular reservoir pattern.
@@TrippinOnTrout Thanks. It is indeed similar to the ''cruncher' fish on reservoirs which has many guises/variations here in Uk.Never crossed my mind about using it on the rivers.Cannot make out the body material from plates on NZ Flies so please enlighten.

Would love to see some spider patterns bro. Don’t think I’ve caught a fish on a spider yet
Great clip and thanks for sharing, the dissolving bags are PVA bags, Polyvinyl Alcohol. Great for course fishing.
Coarse?
Excellent, thanks for sharing! Appreciate the advice and tips, keep those fillers comin'.
Another ripper. Thanks. A great starting point trying to learn which flies to start with and to learn what they look like. Awesome. Cheers PP

Great info Alex thanks for sharing 👍🏻have you ever tried an epoxy mino, it's more of a lure than a fly , but killer
No I haven’t. Might work well imitating smelt in the lakes...

Nice job, Alex.
Thanks heaps Alex. Interested in those Peacock pointer soft hackles you use. What size do you generally use? 14s?

From California and loving your videos. Just subscribed.
Any reason your favorites won't translate to west coast USA waters?
Thanks!
