    What I'd say would be a bigger deal is the implication that if they had metalworking at this level, with the other known technology at the time - particularly among the Romans - why didn't they have (extremely primitive) steam engines?

    Great stuff! No reason Greeks could not make this, the mathmatic brains had been around for thousands of years by this time. Unusual to have someone make it however. Why was it on a boat? Time is used to aid navigation, possibly that is why. Possibly stolen, possibly the owner is hopping mad and off his face because of the ship sinking. I suspect there must be others around. And, don't watch films, read books!
