One thing about Goteye is this was a smart move. He made a legendary album. Even if you don't know his name you hear a track and you know it. But he went out on top, made his money, rode off into the sunset, and can live a regular life. Like if you saw him in the store. You wouldn't think "I'm looking at a multimillionaire."
Yeah and that album took him 12 years to make…. He could be working behind the scenes for another huge album who knows this guy needs to do his research
yeah, gotye made that one album and then intentionally dipped the music industry entirely. i wouldn't argue he was a one-hit wonder in this case, because usually one-hit wonders try to find some ounce of success after that and only get known for one song.
One really cool thing you didn’t bring up about Gotye was the way he treats Somebody That I Used To Know. The music video on TH-cam isn’t monetized. He gets absolutely no ad revenue from it. Not only that, but he refuses to let people use the song in marketing, and he won’t license it out to any big movies. It is however perfectly OK to be used in independent works. Man found himself on top of the world, with the ability to do whatever he wanted, and instead he chose to jump off while simultaneously giving the middle finger to the music industry and everything it stands for. You couldn’t be any more cool than that if you tried.
I have found articles on him pretty interesting. He acknowledges that ‘Somebody’ is so successful that from the royalties of that song alone he is able to do what he want for the rest of his life. He loves music and being a recording artist, but he doesn’t need to be commercially successful ever again. He has an independent record label. He has played for some Australian bands. He apparently plans to release more music. But he is not driven by money or fake and that song becoming so popular set him up for a life where he doesn’t need either to pursue his interests.
When you said Bronte is a great song, I smiled with a lot of satisfaction. I so agree. It’s beautiful and I think his work is 100x stronger and better than most of the popular artists. God, his other songs are so unique. Also, listening to an album of his front to back is so worth it. Even if I still love that one big hit (why bother the name), some of the album tracks are better. Finally, no matter how old his albums are, they remain fresh.
Yeah his deep cuts and other albums are all so good, it's weird that most people (me included) didn't know he existed, and never followed up with the rest of the album. Granted, he didn't capitalize on his big break by churning out a forced 4th album. I still wish he did a little less with the Basics, they low-key drag him down.

If I recall correctly (feel free to fact check this) but Gotye's situation was the song that got all the buzz was from his "back catalogue" at the time. A DJ took it and "remixed" it by essentially adding like an extra hi hat or something barely noticeable a few years after he initially released the original song so Gotye was on tour promoting his new album (current to the time) at the exact moment his old song caught it's second wind as a remix. He couldn't alter his tour schedule to capitalize off the old album's hit while promoting the new album and by the time the tour ended his window kinda shrank down again.

I've watched this video several times. Can you make a part 2 please?
I would love for you to make a part 2. The research you put into this was amazing!!
Moral of the story: never miss his videos
You wish you weren’t black huh, you wish you could be a multiracial trans butterfly loaded to the gills with “culture”.
always miss his videos

First video I’ve seen from you I’m definitely subscribing to you 🤣
mane you are one of the funniest guys i watch on the tube

Gotye literally popped up out of nowhere, casually dropped one of the best pop songs ever and disappeared from the face of the earth
Let's hope Chance's next album just does him justice. I want him to be a long lasting artist.
dw the 28 bieber tracks will keep him on rotation
he’s already long gone
Gyatt dayum bro this is funny asf
Degen talking about Coloring books bein big in middle school just made me feel old lol. That was junior year college for me. Chance 2014-18 was crazy tho.
crazy to think that Dababy could've been one of THE rappers for only slightly longer if he just kept his mouth shut 💀
Ehh his flow was getting old af
All his shit sounded like Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V
Nah he's too repetitive
Honestly, I thought Lil Baby would drop off and DaBaby would be the big artist of the future. I didn't expect it to be the other way around.

To be fair, for somebody we used to know. They made one song, then dipped off the internet forever. Which I can respect
So crazt seeing Lil D grow so big lmao, bro was like a couple thousand subscribers now he is at 1.3 mill crazy

Not just great, but outstandin.
It is fuckin different
And that is the thing
aye u should do a part 2
There are many artists I know like this. I found Gotye to be super forgettable. So much I thought Gotye died and Somebody I use to Know was made in the 90s. I was shocked to find out it was made in 2012
I didn't learn about that song until like, 2020, and I thought it was a least 2 or 3 decades old.
In my country I’ve never heard of that song back in 2012, which is pretty weird because it’s such a massively popular song anywhere else but not in my country
I need to know how Degenerocity turns a mediocre topic into a banger video
Your edits are hilarious! Lmao.
Damn you need to do these more frequently 😭
1:40 nah that was unexpected 💀💀💀💀💀
Lol i remember this randomly popping up in the news
"Watch me nae Watch me killed my cousin" but fr tho rip🕊 that cousin fly high my brother
The Lauryn Hill disrespect will not be tolerated 💀
Tbf, Lauryn Hill is more a rnb artist who raps than a female rapper.
Congrats on 1 million subscribers, stackin that paper off youtube
I was subconsciously waiting and PRAYING Chance would be the end boss lmao.
You delivered hard, bless.
14:21 Funny enough, a Chance the Rapper poster can be seen in Into The Spider-Verse
You can never miss this mans greatness. He will never fall off.

This video kinda showed why I love aphex twin music so much the fact that he made so many songs that sounds fresh and fun and unique to this day is insane
Always listen to your previous projects to up them up man
bro u should do more music content, i love this. I personally love Childish Gambino nn Tyler, The Creator, whom are very interesting and can probably make out a long ass video.

PART 2 PLEASE
If I recall correctly (feel free to fact check this) but Gotye's situation was the song that got all the buzz was from his "back catalogue" at the time. A DJ took it and "remixed" it by essentially adding like an extra hi hat or something barely noticeable a few years after he initially released the original song so Gotye was on tour promoting his new album (current to the time) at the exact moment his old song caught it's second wind as a remix. He couldn't alter his tour schedule to capitalize off the old album's hit while promoting the new album and by the time the tour ended his window kinda shrank down again.
