This a great option for Lecia and for digital medium format. I might pick one of these up for my m6 and gfx as i don’t have a 50 and this would give me a little wider view on the gfx.
It has a bit in the extreme corners for sure. cropping to 4:5 eliminates it, which is why most of these are 1:1 also because I've been on a 1:1 kick lately anyway :)
BTW the old EF Canon 50mm f1.2 L lens front elements would move in & out like this and to make that lens weather resistant all you had to do is install a UV filter or any filter for that matter.
Awesome that it fits the medium format. How much sensor coverage were you able to get? I would like to try on my gfx. I liked the slight swirly bokeh you got there too!
How does it compare to the ttartisan 50mm f1.4 that you also reviewed? If differences are minimal, isn't ttartisan the better bang for the buck since it's much cheaper than thypoch?
Great review and glad to see actual comparison shots instead of just a talking head. I shot Leica in the film days but once I tried an SLR I loved seeing my depth of field so I never went back. And now that mirrorless is here you can shoot at lower shutter speeds with IBIS plus I can use all my old Nikon lenses. I compared my Nikon FE with a 35 F2Ais Nikkor with a Leica M6 and a 35F2 Summicron and shot for shot on slide film the only difference I could see was the Nikkor had more flare which videographers love. So after that I quit lusting after the Leica. Not saying that Leica isn’t in a class all by itself but they are a bit of a niesh product. Now Lens lab and this new company are bringing out competitive products so we could have a Leica camera with 3 lenses for under 20K. Regards Gerry
Hi Benj... a little late but, does the lens cover well the medium sensor on the hasselblad (marginal vignetting on the corners etc)?... because Im wandering if i can use it on my gfx50r. Regards from Spain
Great review Benj! And nice photos, as always. Q: how well does this Typoch 50mm cover the Hassy X2D sensor? I’m looking for a good 50mm for my GFX and they gave the same sensor size 🤓

Agreed but that’s not to say that the Thypoch doesn’t compete with the Leica on quality. It seems like it competes and holds its own pretty well. But there are many who want Leica regardless and that is of course fine.
@@xjc1988 But be aware of that doesn’t exist another 50mm 1.4 can go 45cm and has resistance feedback for rangefinder failure except Leica itself and this one

As a 50 shooter the Lux was something I thought I might be willing to splurge on even though I think it is outrageously overpriced. But the more pics I see and reviews I see/read make me think the Thypoch would be the overall better choice for my needs. But looking forward to trying and then making judgments.
@@benjhaisch definitely on medium format (5:53), but it's there on the ZF as well (8:12). But maybe I am just nitpicking. The Leica is seems only slightly better. And in every other aspect the Simera seems pretty great.
Good for those who are in the market for a budget lens that performs well. Not for me. I don't like Thypoch's design or how they feel and use of it. Focus, aperture, size. My choice is Leica. Your milege may vary.
I don’t mind the design (but prefer the Leica) although I think the aperture spacing is kind of weird. Not sure if those are difference makers for me though given then massive price difference.

@khaipham1157 I didnt get it until I got my Leica M 35mm f/2. I can't explain why but it is hands down the best lens I have ever used across any system, The Fall off is just so damn beautiful
@martinrumfeld8593 oh gosh, I got it used on ebay. The full title was: Leica Summicron M 35mm F/2 ASPH Black E39 #11879. If that means anything to you lol. I have tried other leica lenses like the 35mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/2 APO and I wasnt blown away. But THAT 35mm f/2 is just so noticeably different and gorgeous. It almost like... it has more contrast and sharpness towards the center of the lens, and wide open it just makes the prettiest bokeh without being distracting. It was the first time I looked at a photo and said "wow. I can SEE the difference."
@@RumoHasIt Have to agree with you. The big difference for me is the feel of the lens. A lot of reviewers will say the build quality feels close to Leica, but honestly I don't think they do. I own Voigtlanders, some Chinese lenses, and a bunch of Leica glass all the way from 50s to modern lens. The Leica have a very unique feel and response. The focus throws feel very loose when you first try them, yet they are extremely accurate when focusing. Same with the aperture rings. Most of the Leica rings feel looser and easier to move than you would expect, yet they still have a very noticeable click at each stop. Every non-Leica lens I have used comprises somewhere that the Leica version just doesn't. Does not mean it's best image quality or value, but the best Leica glass does offer a unique experience.
