I mean this isn't new. U.S. just been slow to respond to this threat. Years ago India unanimously banned TikTok from the country after seeing propaganda from China promoting anti-India narratives.
China requires that ALL large companies doing business in China have Party members in high ranking positions of the Chinese entity. They also require access to user data whenever they want it. This applies to foreign companies, too - like major retailers, tech and platform companies, car companies, etc. This is not new. It’s been this way for many decades. They also control market access in China. They have many levers to make foreign companies do whatever they want them to do. That power isn’t limited to the foreign companies’ operations in China. “We command, you do…or, you’re out.” That’s the game. Think about it.
Besides the fact that China bans all American and most foreign social media, we should not only ban Tiktok but also XHS, QQ, WeChat, etc. just as a matter of reciprocity. All the ill actions of Tiktok put aside, this is the most logical and strongest argument to ban it.

Not necessarily a W, as while the tiktok chaos is washed away, there will be unintended consequences to cutting a popular platform I do worry about the small American businesses and creators who amassed a following on Tiktok as a means to promote their business beyond the scope of traditional marketing, which would've meant a larger customer base and potential revenue for these small businesses. Now that tiktok is banned, these businesses' ability to reach their audience has been significantly reduced, which could cost them visibility from valuable customers, and that doesn't help grow the US economy on a macro level. Keep in mind it takes time and investment to grow a following on any platform, so a lot of small businesses can not simply move to another platform to start with a portion of the base following them, (unless they've already diversified their social reach beforehand)
This is why I never had a tiktok. And why I tell anyone around me not to get it, or to just get rid of it. especially if they complain about brainrot..

The effects of short form media are bad enough, but add in the CCP actively involved and things get bad on a whole other level. Are there really 170M Americans who use Titkok?! Good lord, no wonder so many people seem to have lost their grip on reality. I've seen some Titkok scroll-thrus reposted to YT, and there's so much fake stuff and very manipulative content - clickbait ragebait, people claiming truths that I know for sure are BS... It would be very confusing for someone whose tendency is to believe what they see and assume good faith by the uploader.
And yes, I know lots of people get paid good money to make brainrot, divisive lies and to promote fake lifestyles, but that just gives me more reason to want it gone. Sure, it's for entertainment purposes only... except that lots of viewrs take it seriously, so many people in America now believe the Earth is flat and Devil's Tower is a fossilized giant tree, but dinosaur fossils were fakes created by the paleontologists, and on and on and on... it seems like people on titkok are copycats, so whatever fake BS goes viral today, everyone who's chasing money will make up some BS that's relevant to that. And now, the video you're watching shows some of the ways the platform manipulates you politically, if you use it. Yeah, the platform pays people for participating in brainrotting the viewers, but so what? Hitmen get paid for offing people, but we don't defend the occupation.

Personally I am not sure why trading with China is even legal - they have fixed exchange rates, whilst all of us have floating ones, so what it does is give more and more power to the CCP.

I do worry about the small American businesses and creators who amassed a following on Tiktok as a means to promote their business beyond the scope of traditional marketing, which would've meant a larger customer base and potential revenue for these small businesses.
Now that tiktok is banned, these businesses' ability to reach their audience has been significantly reduced, which could cost them visibility from valuable customers, and that doesn't help grow the US economy on a macro level.
Keep in mind it takes time and investment to grow a following on any platform, so a lot of small businesses can not simply move to another platform to start with a portion of the base following them, (unless they've already diversified their social reach beforehand)
